Remove/install engine with front axle carrier - AR01.10-P-2500ELS

DANGER Risk of injury  caused by fingers being jammed or pinched when removing, installing or aligning hoods, doors, trunk lid/rear-end door or sliding roof. No parts of the body or limbs should be within the operating area when the components are moving. AS00.00-Z-0011-01A
DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Deactivate easy entry/exit feature Vehicles with code 275 (Memory package (driver's seat, steering column, mirrors))
IMPORTANT Disabling takes place via the buttons on the steering wheel in the "Comfort" menu of the multifunction display, see vehicle-operator's manual.
 
2 Bring complete wheels of front axle (27) into the straight-ahead position and fix steering wheel with holding device NOTES The steering wheel must not be turned when detaching steering coupling. Otherwise the clock spring contact will be destroyed.

3 Set DIRECT SELECT gear selector switch to position "N" and release parking brake    
4 Detach ground line from battery   AR54.10-P-0003EW

5 Secure vehicle on vehicle lift   AR00.60-P-0100EWS
6 Remove bottom engine compartment paneling   AR61.20-P-1105EW
7 Drain coolant   AR20.00-P-1142EL

8 Open grommet (44) and drain off coolant in the low-temperature circuit

9 Remove upper engine cover    
10 Remove both engine air intake ducts (1) upstream of the air filter housings (2)    
11 Remove both air filter housings (2)   AR09.10-P-1150ELS
12 Suction refrigerant out of air conditioning   AR83.30-P-1760CW
13 Disconnect refrigerant line (3) at engine compartment connecting point and close off openings with plugs SPECIAL TOOL Record plug Figure
14 Detach vacuum line (7) and place to one side   AR43.05-P-1320EL
15 Detach coolant hose (9) and place to one side    
16 Detach coolant hose (5) from the connecting point to the low-temperature circuit return line (15) on low-temperature circuit coolant expansion reservoir (6)    
17 Detach coolant hose (12) from the connecting point to the charge air cooler circulation pump (17) on low-temperature circuit coolant expansion reservoir (6)    
18 Detach coolant hose (10) from the connecting point to the high temperature engine cooling system expansion reservoir (16)    
19 Detach coolant hose (13) from the charge air cooler connecting point (20) on charge air cooler (19)   AR20.20-P-7441-01RQ
20 Detach coolant hose (11) from the connecting point for the coolant pump (18)   AR20.20-P-7441-01RQ
21 Detach coolant hose (4) from the connecting point for coolant - temperature regulator housing (23)   AR20.20-P-7441-01RQ
22 Detach coolant hose (24) from the charge air cooler connecting point (21) on charge air cooler (19)   AR20.20-P-7441-01RQ
23 Fasten cooler at the upper radiator crossmember and secure against falling down    
24 Disconnect engine wiring harness on the vehicle side   AR01.00-P-2410-02ELS
25 Relieve fuel pressure over diagnostic socket   AR07.03-P-1460-01VA

27 Detach complete wheels on front axle (27)

28 Remove nuts (28) and detach torsion bar linkage (33) from stabilizer bar (30)   AR32.20-P-0300EW
IMPORTANT The torsion bar (30) remains on the front axle carrier (26).
29 Remove screw/bolts (34), remove brake caliper (35) from steering knuckles and fasten with attached lines to suspension struts (32) MODEL 212.067/099/167/168/267/299 with ENGINE 276.8 divided floating caliper brake

30 Detach electrical line to intelligent servo module for DIRECT SELECT (A80) and unclip on transmission (39)   AR27.19-P-0550EW
31 Disconnect electrical line on electrical transmission oil pump (M42) and unclip on transmission (39)    
32 Remove heat shield and disconnect electrical connector for transmission control TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, heat shield to transmission housing *BA27.40-P-1014-01A 
33 Lay electrical wiring harness (38) outside the working area    
34 Disconnect electrical connections for NOx sensors   AR07.70-P-0001EL
35 Disconnect electrical connections for NOx storage catalytic converter temperature sensor   AR07.70-P-0002EL
36 Disconnect exhaust system at center muffler connecting point on rear muffler   AR49.10-P-7100EL
37 Detach steering coupling (43)   AR46.10-P-8000EW
IMPORTANT The steering coupling (43) remains on the rack-and-pinion steering.
38 Detach refrigerant line (22) at lower connecting point IMPORTANT Seal openings with SPECIAL TOOL stop plugs.

39 Detach electrical line (29) at rack-and-pinion steering, unclip on front axle carrier (26) and set aside    
40 Detach oil line (25) for transmission (39) on connecting point and close openings with grommet SPECIAL TOOL Record plug Figure
41 Detach level sensor on thrust arm    
42 Disconnect electrical connections from left and right rpm sensors and unclip electrical lines from the brackets   AR33.10-P-0100-06CW
43 Remove screw/bolts (31) and detach suspension struts (32) from steering knuckles   AR33.10-P-0200EW
44 Detach diagonal struts (36) on front axle carrier (26) and place to one side   AR33.10-P-0001EW
45 Detach front reinforcement braces from frame floor assembly   AR49.10-P-7100EL
46 Support front axle carrier (26) with lifting platform and aggregate mount and secure whole engine transmission unit against slipping and falling down with a tensioning strap IMPORTANT When doing so ensure that mounting plates are evenly aligned.  
47 Remove screw/bolts (41) and remove rear engine crossmember (40) with rear engine mount.42   AR22.10-P-1180CW
48 Detach propeller shaft from transmission output flange   AR41.10-P-0050EW
NOTES Apply color markings to the transmission to indicate position of the propeller shaft relative to the transmission output flange. This ensures that the components are reinstalled at the factory installation position.
Otherwise, drivetrain vibrations will occur.
49 Unscrew screw/bolts on front axle carrier (26) from longitudinal members   AR33.10-P-0001EW
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace screw/bolts.
50 Lower engine transmission unit with front axle carrier (26) NOTES The engine must not lie on the vehicle. Damage can occur to lines and detachable parts otherwise.  
51 Install in the reverse order    
52 Check engine cooling system for leaktightness   AR20.00-P-1010EL
53 Check engine cooling system for low-temperature circuit for leaktightness   AR20.00-P-1010EL
54 Check transmission oil level and correct if necessary ENGINE 276.8 in MODEL 212.06/26 with TRANSMISSION 722.96 AR27.00-P-0270SYZ
55 Check engine oil level; correct if necessary    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE AP18.00-P-0101CWZ
56 Perform wheel alignment check   AR40.20-P-0200EW
57 Read out fault memory using the diagnostic system and clear if necessary    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE AD00.00-P-2000-04A
DANGER Risk of accident  from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury  (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts. AS00.00-Z-0005-01A
58 Carry out an engine test run, checking the engine for proper operation and leaktightness
