DANGER Risk of explosion  caused by fuel igniting, risk of poisoning caused by inhaling and swallowing fuel as well as risk of injury to eyes and skin caused by contact with fuel. No fires, sparks, open flames or smoking. Pour fuels into suitable and appropriately marked containers only.
Wear protective clothing when handling fuel.

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Secure vehicle against rolling away, shift transmission to neutral position, and release parking brake.    
2 Deactivate easy entry and exit feature. Engine 176 in model 223
with code 275 (Memory Package (driver's seat, steering column and mirror))
 
3 Secure vehicle on vehicle lift.   AR00.60-P-1006A
4 Pump pneumatic suspension strut pressure into central reservoir using diagnostic system.    
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS     AD00.00-P-2000-06FR
    NOTES The complete wheels must not touch the ground. Suspension struts can otherwise be predamaged and subsequently fail.
IMPORTANT Select menu item "Actuations" in active suspension and damping system control unit.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Pump pneumatic pressure using vehicle diagnosis system from central reservoir to suspension struts.
 
5.1 Disconnect ground line from the on-board electrical system battery (G1). Engine 176 in model 223
except code 490 (Electrohydraulic suspension)

5.2 Remove front electrohydraulic controller units (M67, M67/1). Engine 176 in model 223
with code 490 (Electrohydraulic suspension)

6 Turn steering wheel to center position (front wheels in straight-ahead position) and fix steering wheel in place using holding device. NOTES Do not turn steering wheel when steering coupling is removed.
The clock spring contact will otherwise be destroyed.

7 Drain coolant of the engine cooling circuit. INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Only install lower engine compartment paneling after a leak test. AR20.00-P-1142SC
8 Drain coolant of low-temperature circuit. INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Only install lower engine compartment lining after leak test. AR20.00-P-1144SC
9 Drain coolant for the 48 V on-board electrical system. INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Only install front and center lower engine compartment lining after leak test. AR20.00-P-2014SC
10 Remove front wheel and tire assemblies.   AR40.10-P-1102A
11 Remove the coolant expansion reservoir.   AR20.30-P-4949SC
12 Remove air filter housing. Left air filter housing AR09.10-P-1151SC

INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Do not install upper engine cover until after the leak test.

13 Discharge air conditioning system.   AR83.30-P-1760S
14 Remove front bumper. Engine 176 in model 223.0/1 AR88.20-P-2000S
15 Remove cold air duct (2). SPECIAL TOOL Dismantling tool Fig 7
16 Remove covers (3) on left and right. SPECIAL TOOL Dismantling tool Fig 7
17 Remove screws (4) in the cross strut (5) on the front module and remove cross strut (5). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw, front module cross strut to crossmember *BA62.30-P-1005-01G 
18 Remove clip fasteners (6) of the cooler unit.    
19 Remove vacuum line (7) from the separating point on the firewall.    
20 Expose inerting line (8) of inerting system, remove at separating point and fasten to engine. Engine 176 in model 223
with code 2U8 (Alternative refrigerant)

21 Remove cover (9).    
22 Remove fuel pressure via the service connection.   AR07.03-P-1460-01SC
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Dust protection cap to service connection *BA07.03-P-1005-01H

23 Remove union nut (10), pull out fuel line (11) and fasten to engine. IMPORTANT Collect escaping fuel using suitable means.

24 Remove purge line (12) at separating point. SPECIAL TOOL Record plug Fig 6
25 Remove coolant hose (13) at separating point for the firewall. IMPORTANT Capture escaping coolant using suitable means. AR20.20-P-7441-01RQ
26 Remove coolant hoses (14). IMPORTANT Capture escaping coolant using suitable means. AR20.20-P-7441-01RQ
27 Remove coolant hose (15) at coolant switchover valve (Y73/1) from vehicle and fasten to engine. IMPORTANT Capture escaping coolant using suitable means. AR20.20-P-7441-01RQ
28 Remove refrigerant line (16) at separating point.    
REFER TO CAPACITIES & SPECIFICATIONS Compressor oils (specification 362.1) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace sealing ring and moisten with compressor oil. BB00.40-P-0362-01A
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, connecting point for lines *BA83.30-P-1009-01P

29 Remove refrigerant line (17) at separating point and fasten with suitable means to engine.    
REFER TO CAPACITIES & SPECIFICATIONS Compressor oils (specification 362.1) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace sealing ring and moisten with compressor oil. BB00.40-P-0362-01A
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, connecting point for lines *BA83.30-P-1009-01P

30 Remove cover (22).    
31 Remove coolant pump (M75/2)   AR09.41-P-6931SC
32 Remove coolant hose (18) from the cooler. IMPORTANT Capture escaping coolant using suitable means. AR20.20-P-7441-01RQ
33 Remove coolant hose (19) at separating point and fasten with suitable means outside the working area. IMPORTANT Capture escaping coolant using suitable means.

34 Remove coolant hose (20) from cooler and fasten with suitable means outside the working area. IMPORTANT Capture escaping coolant using suitable means. AR20.20-P-7441-01RQ
35 Remove coolant hose (21) from coolant pump (M43/11). IMPORTANT Capture escaping coolant using suitable means. AR20.20-P-7441-01RQ
36 Release and disconnect electrical connector (23) and remove electric line from the supporting frame of the cooler unit and from the front axle carrier (46). SPECIAL TOOL Dismantling tool Fig 7
37 Release and disconnect electrical connector (24).    
38 Expose electrical wiring harness (25) and fasten with suitable means outside the working area. SPECIAL TOOL Dismantling tool Fig 7
39 Release and disconnect electrical connectors (26).    
40 Remove electrical wiring harness (27) from front axle carrier (46) and fasten with suitable means outside the working area. SPECIAL TOOL Dismantling tool Fig 7
41 Remove steering coupling from steering shaft.   AR46.10-P-8000-01LW
42 Remove heat shield from transmission.   AR27.40-P-0700-01S
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, leaf spring for heat shield to transmission *BA27.10-P-1008-04H 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, heat shield to oil pan *BA27.10-P-1009-04H 
43 Disconnect engine wiring harness for removal of the engine.   AR15.18-P-1000-05SC
Notice  General information on vehicles with high-voltage on-board electrical system and/or lithium-ion battery and/or gaseous-fuel drive system as well as personal protective equipment   AH00.00-Z-0300-01A
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, 48 V subharness to refrigerant compressor/electric motor/firewall *BA15.18-P-1004-03D 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, 48 V subharness to body *BA15.18-P-1005-03D 
44 Remove exhaust system. IMPORTANT Install engine carrier at the rear after removing the exhaust system. AR49.10-P-7142S
45 Remove propeller shaft.   AR41.10-P-0050S
46 Release and disconnect electrical connector of the brakepad wear sensor (S10/2). Only on right hand side of vehicle.  
47 Remove connector coupling of the brakepad wear sensor (S10/2) from the right brake caliper (28). Only on right hand side of vehicle.
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, brake wear sensor to brake caliper

48 Remove brake calipers (28) from wheel carriers (45) and fasten with suitable means to vehicle. Engine 176 in model 223 with code B06 (Silver brake calipers) except code B07 (AMG - ceramic brake system) except code U70 (red-painted brake callipers)

49 Install guard plates for protection of brake disk cover panels.   AR42.00-P-0100-01S

50 Release and disconnect electrical connectors (29) on right and left side of vehicle. IMPORTANT The number of electrical connectors varies depending on the vehicle equipment.  
51 Open bracket (30) on the right and left side of the vehicle and remove electric lines from the bracket (30).    
52 Open brackets (31, 32) on the right and left side of the vehicle and remove electric lines (33).    
53 Release and disconnect electrical connectors (34) on the right and left side of the vehicle.    
54 Remove clamps (35) from the upper transverse control arm on the right and left side of the vehicle.    
55 Remove screw (36) on the right and left side of the vehicle and remove suspension struts from the spring links. IMPORTANT Nut, suspension strut at front to spring control arm *BA32.25-P-1002-04O 
56 Remove nut (37) on the right and left side of the vehicle and remove wheel carriers (45) from the upper transverse control arm. TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, steering knuckle to transverse control arm *BA33.20-P-1006-01T 
57 Remove screws (38). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw, support to lower impact absorber *BA62.30-P-1009-01G 
58 Remove screws (39) and remove front mounts (40). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw, front mount to absorber *BA62.30-P-1011-01G 
WARNING Risk of injury  . Moving parts can pinch, crush or, in extreme cases even sever extremities. No parts of the body or limbs should be within the operating area of mechanical components when moving components. AS00.00-Z-0009-01A
59 Support front axle carrier (46) and secure engine transmission unit against slipping and falling down using suitable means.    
REFER TO SPECIAL TOOLS 000 588 25 62 00 Lift table   WS01.00-P-0264A
60 Remove transmission mount from the body.   AR22.10-P-0007SC
61 Remove nuts (41). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt/nut, rear mounting support to longitudinal member *BA33.10-P-1005-01P 
62 Remove screws (42) and remove struts (43). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, front axle carrier at rear to longitudinal member *BA33.10-P-1002-01P 
63 Remove screws (44) from the front axle carrier (46). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, front axle carrier at front to longitudinal member *BA33.10-P-1001-01P 
64 Lower front axle carrier (46) with the engine transmission unit.    
REFER TO SPECIAL TOOLS 000 588 25 62 00 Lift table NOTES The engine transmission unit must not be in contact with body panels.
Otherwise damage will occur.
NOTES Do not crush or kink or subject lines to tension.
Otherwise, the lines will be damaged.
IMPORTANT Aid of helper required.

65 Install in the reverse order.    
  Concluding tasks     
WARNING Risk of burn injuries  , suffocation and poisoning when working on the exhaust system and the components connected to it. Risk of suffocation and risk of poisoning caused by inhalation of gaseous and solid components of the exhaust. Risk of poisoning  caused by skin contact with solid components of the exhaust. Wear protective clothing and safety glasses. Use the extraction system. Move people out of the danger zone. AS49.00-Z-0001-01A
WARNING Risk of accident  from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury  (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts. AS00.00-Z-0005-01A
66 Perform engine test run. While doing so, check engine for proper operation and leak tightness.    
67 Perform wheel alignment measurement.   AR40.20-P-0200S
