System Tests: Notes

CAUTION: Disconnect the battery before disconnecting GEM or CTM connectors. Failure to do so will result in GEM/CTM storing erroneous codes and may also result in erratic operation of GEM/CTM after reconnection.
NOTE: If concern is that indicator never illuminates, check bulb before performing system tests. To test bulbs, enter instrument cluster self-diagnostics and advance to bulb mode. This will command all instrument cluster bulbs and LEDs to illuminate. See USING HYBRID ELECTRONIC CLUSTER (HEC)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.

(1) Replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest system.
(2) See appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS - ECONOLINE, EXPEDITION, EXPLORER (4.0L OHV), PICKUPS, (ALL GASOLINE), MOUNTAINEER (4.0L OHV), NAVIGATOR & RANGER article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS.
(3) If gasoline engine, see SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - EEC-V (GASOLINE) under ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If diesel engine, see SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - EEC-V (DIESEL) under ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
(4) See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article for diagnosis.
(5) See appropriate PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEMS article.
(6) Perform Hybrid Electronic Cluster (HEC) self-diagnostics.
