Test N: 4X4 Indicator Inoperative Or Always On

NOTE: After repair, clear DTCs and repeat self-test.
  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). Observe GEM PIDs IGN_S, IGN_R, IGN_O/L and IGN_A while turning ignition switch through all positions. If PID values agree with switch positions, go to next step. If PID values do not agree with switch positions, repair ignition switch circuit(s) as necessary. See POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
  2. Use GEM DTCs recorded from continuous and on-demand self-tests. If no DTCs, or DTC P1804 or P1806, are present, go to next step. If any other DTCs are present, perform appropriate test. See GEM DTC/CTM INDEX  table.
  3. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Observe GEM PID 4WDHIGH. Toggle GEM active command 4WDHIGH ON and OFF. 4X4 indicator should illuminate, then go out. If 4X4 indicator operates as indicated, verify the symptom. See SYMPTOM INDEX  table. If 4X4 indicator does not operate as indicated and PID displays ON-B-, go to step  8. If 4X4 indicator stays on continuously and PID displays ONO-G, go to step  6. If 4X4 indicator does not illuminate and PID displays ONO-G, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect GEM/CTM 22-pin connector. Connect 5-amp fused jumper wire between GEM/CTM 22-pin connector terminal No. 9 (Light Blue wire) and ground. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. See Fig 1. If 4X4 indicator illuminates, go to step  10. If 4X4 indicator does not illuminate, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect instrument cluster 20-pin connector. Measure resistance between instrument panel 20-pin connector terminal No. 4 and GEM/CTM connector C241 terminal No. 9. See Figure and Fig 1 . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step  11. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Light Blue wire.
  6. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect instrument panel 20-pin connector. Disconnect GEM/CTM 22-pin connector. Measure resistance between instrument panel 20-pin connector terminal No. 4 (Light Blue wire) and ground. See Figure. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Light Blue wire.
  7. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If 4X4 indicator is stays illuminated, go to step  11. If 4X4 indicator goes out, go to step  10.
  8. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect GEM/CTM 22-pin connector. Disconnect instrument panel 20-pin connector. Disconnect anti-lock brake control module connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between GEM/CTM 22-pin connector terminal No. 9 (Light Blue wire) and ground. See Fig 1. If there is any voltage, repair short to power in Light Blue wire. If there is no voltage, go to next step.
  9. Using NGS tester, observe GEM PID 4WDHIGH. Toggle GEM active command HIGH LAMP to ON, then OFF. If PID displays ON-B-, go to next step. If PID does not display ON-B-, go to step  11.
  10. Disconnect all GEM/CTM connectors. Inspect connectors for corrosion and pushed out pins. Connect all GEM/CTM connectors, ensuring they are connected correctly. Operate system and verify if concern is still present. If concern is still present, replace GEM/CTM. See GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE/CENTRAL TIMER MODULE (GEM/CTM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If concern is not present, system is operating correctly at this time. Clear DTCs and repeat self-test.
  11. Disconnect all instrument cluster connectors. Inspect connectors for corrosion and pushed out pins. Connect all instrument cluster connectors, ensuring they are connected correctly. Operate system and verify if concern is still present. If concern is still present, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If concern is not present, system is operating correctly at this time. Clear DTCs and repeat self-test.
