Long Block Replacement

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
NOTE:

The oil cooler can not be cleaned out. In the event that the engine requires rebuilding or replacement, replace the oil cooler.

  1. Remove the engine from the vehicle. Refer to REMOVAL .
  2. Remove the engine wire harness.
  3. Remove the right side and left side fuel injectors. Refer to INJECTOR(S), FUEL, REMOVAL .
  4. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to MANIFOLD, INTAKE, REMOVAL .
  5. Remove the right side and left side fuel rail. Refer to RAIL, FUEL, REMOVAL .
  6. Remove the glow plugs. Refer to PLUG, GLOW, 3.0L DIESEL, REMOVAL .
  7. Remove the turbocharger. Refer to TURBOCHARGER, REMOVAL .
  8. Remove the water pump. Refer to PUMP, WATER, REMOVAL .

  9. Remove the left front coolant tube bolt (1).

  10. Remove the left rear coolant tube bolt (1).

  11. Remove the bolt (1) and the left side coolant tube (2).

  12. Remove the bolts (1, 2) and the right side coolant tube (3).

  13. Remove the banjo bolt (2) and the coolant tube (1).

  14. Remove the bolt (1) and the idler pulley (2).
  15. Remove the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor. Refer to SENSOR, CRANKSHAFT POSITION, REMOVAL .
  16. Remove the generator. Refer to GENERATOR, REMOVAL .
  17. Remove the A/C compressor. Refer to COMPRESSOR, A/C, REMOVAL .
    NOTE:

    DO NOT REUSE THE OLD OIL COOLER ADAPTER.

  18. Remove the oil cooler adapter and discard it. Refer to ADAPTER, OIL COOLER, REMOVAL .
  19. Remove the right fuel injection pump to fuel rail fuel tube. Refer to TUBE(S), FUEL, REMOVAL .
  20. Remove the left fuel injection pump to fuel rail fuel tube. Refer to TUBE(S), FUEL, REMOVAL .
  21. Remove the fuel injection pump. Refer to PUMP, FUEL INJECTION, HIGH PRESSURE, REMOVAL .
  22. Remove the starter motor. Refer to STARTER, REMOVAL .
  23. Remove the vibration damper. Refer to DAMPER, VIBRATION, REMOVAL .
  24. Remove the flex plate. Refer to FLEXPLATE, REMOVAL .
  25. In the reverse order install all the parts removed onto the NEW engine. 
  26. Install the flex plate. Refer to FLEXPLATE, INSTALLATION .

  27. Removed the crankshaft locking tool (1).

  28. Install the engine block plug (1) and tighten to 30 N.m 22 ft. lbs.).
  29. Install the vibration damper. Refer to DAMPER, VIBRATION, INSTALLATION .
  30. Install the starter motor. Refer to STARTER, INSTALLATION .
  31. Install the fuel injection pump. Refer to PUMP, FUEL INJECTION, HIGH PRESSURE, INSTALLATION .
  32. Install the left fuel injection pump to fuel rail fuel tube. Refer to TUBE(S), FUEL, INSTALLATION .
  33. Install the right fuel injection pump to fuel rail fuel tube. Refer to TUBE(S), FUEL, INSTALLATION .
    NOTE:

    DO NOT REUSE THE OLD OIL COOLER ADAPTER.

  34. Install a NEW  oil cooler adapter. Refer to ADAPTER, OIL COOLER, INSTALLATION .
  35. Install the A/C compressor. Refer to COMPRESSOR, A/C, INSTALLATION .
  36. Install the generator. Refer to GENERATOR, INSTALLATION .
  37. Install the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor. Refer to SENSOR, CRANKSHAFT POSITION, INSTALLATION .

  38. Install the idler pulley (2) and tighten the bolt (1) to 32 N.m (24 ft. lbs.).

  39. Using NEW  sealing washers, install the coolant tube (1) and tighten the banjo bolt (2) to 35 N.m (26 ft. lbs.).

  40. Install the right side coolant tube (3) and tighten the bolts (1, 2) to 25 N.m (18 ft. lbs.).

  41. Install the left side coolant tube (2) and tighten the bolt (1) to 25 N.m (18 ft. lbs.).

  42. Install the left rear coolant tube bolt (1) and tighten to 25 N.m (18 ft. lbs.).

  43. Install the left front coolant tube bolt (1) and tighten to 25 N.m (18 ft. lbs.).
  44. Install the water pump. Refer to PUMP, WATER, INSTALLATION .
  45. Install the turbocharger. Refer to TURBOCHARGER, INSTALLATION .
  46. Install the glow plugs. Refer to PLUG, GLOW, 3.0L DIESEL, INSTALLATION .
  47. Install the right side and left side fuel rail. Refer to RAIL, FUEL, INSTALLATION .
  48. Install the intake manifold. Refer to MANIFOLD, INTAKE, INSTALLATION .
  49. Install the right side and left side fuel injectors. Refer to INJECTOR(S), FUEL, INSTALLATION .
  50. Install the engine wire harness.
  51. Install the engine into the vehicle. Refer to INSTALLATION .
