Section 13 (3.0L Turbo Diesel (Service Information)): Removal

  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the hood. Refer to HOOD, REMOVAL .
  3. Remove the oil filter. Refer to FILTER, ENGINE OIL, REMOVAL .
  4. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  5. Remove the front skid plate. Refer to PLATE, SKID, TRANSFER CASE, REMOVAL .
  6. Remove the front suspension skid plate. Refer to PLATE, SKID, TRANSFER CASE, REMOVAL .
  7. Remove the transmission skid plate. Refer to PLATE, SKID, TRANSFER CASE, REMOVAL .
  8. Drain the cooling system. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  9. Drain the engine oil. Using a NEW  sealing washer, install and tighten drain plug to 45 N.m (33 ft. lbs.).
  10. Remove the bolt securing the power steering supply line.
  11. Remove the rear A/C compressor mounting bolt.
  12. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.

  13. Remove the engine cover (1).

  14. Disconnect the Charge Air Cooler (CAC) hose at resonator (3).
  15. Remove the CAC hose (2) from the turbocharger.
  16. Release the clips (1) and remove the charge air resonator (3).
  17. Remove the charge air resonator mount bracket.

  18. Disconnect the CAC hose (1) from the EGR air flow control valve.

  19. Remove the coolant recovery bottle. Refer to BOTTLE, COOLANT RECOVERY, REMOVAL .
  20. Remove the cooling fan. Refer to FAN, COOLING, REMOVAL .
  21. Remove the upper radiator hose.
  22. Remove the lower radiator hose.

  23. Remove the cowl extension (1) and the side extensions (2, 5). Refer to SILENCER, COWL EXTENSION, REMOVAL .
  24. Remove the air cleaner body and the turbocharger inlet hose. Refer to BODY, AIR CLEANER, REMOVAL .

  25. Remove the bolts (2) and the fuel injection pump blocker shield (1).

  26. Disconnect the low pressure supply (2) and return (1) lines from the fuel injection pump. Refer to FITTING, QUICK CONNECT .
  27. Disconnect the brake booster vacuum hose.
  28. Disconnect the two heater hoses at bulk head.

  29. Remove the nut and the ground cable from the frame rail.
  30. Remove the generator. Refer to GENERATOR, REMOVAL .
  31. Remove the A/C compressor. Refer to COMPRESSOR, A/C, REMOVAL .
  32. Remove the oil cooler adapter. Refer to ADAPTER, OIL COOLER, REMOVAL .
  33. Remove the left exhaust manifold. Refer to MANIFOLD, EXHAUST, REMOVAL .
  34. Remove the starter. Refer to STARTER, REMOVAL .
  35. Paint mark the flex plate to torque converter relation and remove the torque converter bolts.
  36. Remove the starter wire harness-to-oil pan retainers.
  37. Disconnect the engine wire harness connector from the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).

  38. Remove the glow plug module. Refer to MODULE, GLOW PLUG, 3.0L DIESEL, REMOVAL .
  39. Disconnect the engine wire harness connector at right side fenderwell.
  40. Disconnect the engine wire harness connector below right head lamp.
  41. Remove the engine wire harness chassis ground.
  42. Move engine wire harness and position aside.
  43. Raise and support the vehicle.
  44. Remove the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). Refer to FILTER, DIESEL PARTICULATE, REMOVAL .

  45. On 4x4 models, remove the front axle (1). Refer to REMOVAL .
  46. Remove the transmission dipstick tube.
  47. Remove the upper five transmission-to-engine bolts.
  48. Remove the four transmission-to-oil pan bolts.
  49. Remove the bolts and position aside the power steering pump.
  50. Remove the bolts securing the transmission cooler liner to oil pan.
  51. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
  52. Position floor jack under the transmission and slightly raise.

  53. Install the (special tool #VM.10360A-2, Bracket, Engine Lifting (Right)) (1) and securely tighten bolts (2).

  54. Install the (special tool #VM.10360A-3, Bracket, Engine Lifting (Left Front)) (1) and securely tighten bolt (2).

  55. Install the (special tool #VM.10360A-1, Bracket, Engine Lifting (Left Rear)) (1) and securely tighten bolts (2).
  56. Position the engine hoist and connect engine lift chain to engine lift fixtures.

  57. Remove the bolts (1) and the left side engine mount heat shield (2).

  58. Remove the bolts (2) and the right side engine mount heat shield (1).

    Right side shown in the illustration, left side similar.

  59. Remove the right and left engine mount retaining nuts (1).
  60. Remove the engine from vehicle.
