Removal And Installation

REMOVAL 

WARNING:

On vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the airbag system before attempting any steering wheel, steering column, seat belt tensioner, or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait two minutes for the airbag system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the airbag system. Failure to take the proper precautions could result in accidental airbag deployment and personal or fatal injury.

  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable(s). Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  2. Remove the steering column as necessary. Refer to COLUMN, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  3. Remove the floor console, if equipped. Refer to CONSOLE, FLOOR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  4. Remove the left and right A-pillar trim. Refer to PANEL, A-PILLAR TRIM, WITH GRAB HANDLE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

  5. Using a trim stick or equivalent, remove the defroster grill.
  6. Remove fence line bolts (1).
  7. Position the rubber door seal to the side to avoid damage.

  8. Remove left and right side covers (1).
  9. Remove the Radio. Refer to RADIO, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  10. Remove the instrument cluster. Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

  11. Remove the screws from behind the instrument cluster (1).
  12. Remove the headlamp switch. Refer to SWITCH, HEADLAMP, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  13. Remove the shifter. For 68RFE refer to SHIFTER, TRANSMISSION, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION , or for 8HP75 refer to SHIFTER, TRANSMISSION, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION , or for AS69RC refer to SHIFTER, TRANSMISSION, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  14. If equipped, remove the manual park release lever. Refer to LEVER, MANUAL PARK RELEASE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  15. Remove the left and right instrument panel speakers. Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL END SPEAKER .
  16. Remove the center speaker. Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL CENTER SPEAKER .
  17. Remove the upper and lower glove box assemblies from the instrument panel. Refer to GLOVE BOX, INSTRUMENT PANEL, LOWER, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION , and GLOVE BOX, INSTRUMENT PANEL, UPPER, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

  18. Remove the passenger air bag support bolts (1).
  19. Remove the 38 instrument panel cover fasteners.

  20. Remove the instrument panel cover from the vehicle.

INSTALLATION

  1. Partially install the instrument panel cover in the vehicle access and connect the passenger side airbag harness.

  2. Install the passenger air bag support bolts (1) and tighten to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  3. Install and securely tighten the 38 instrument panel cover fasteners.

  4. Install fence line bolts (1) and tighten to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  5. Install the defroster grille.

  6. Install screws in instrument cluster opening (1).
  7. Install the upper and lower glove box assemblies from the instrument panel. Refer to GLOVE BOX, INSTRUMENT PANEL, LOWER, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION , and GLOVE BOX, INSTRUMENT PANEL, UPPER, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  8. Install the center speaker. Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL CENTER SPEAKER .
  9. Install the left and right instrument panel speakers. Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL END SPEAKER .
  10. If equipped, install the manual park release lever. Refer to LEVER, MANUAL PARK RELEASE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  11. Install the headlamp switch. Refer to SWITCH, HEADLAMP, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  12. Install the instrument cluster. Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  13. Install the radio. Refer to RADIO, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  14. Install the shifter. For 68RFE refer to SHIFTER, TRANSMISSION, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION , for 8HP75 refer to SHIFTER, TRANSMISSION, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION , for AS69RC refer to SHIFTER, TRANSMISSION, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  15. Install the left and right A-pillar trim. Refer to PANEL, A-PILLAR TRIM, WITH GRAB HANDLE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

    NOTE:

  16. Install the left and right side covers (1).
  17. Install the rubber door seals.
  18. Install the floor console, if equipped. Refer to CONSOLE, FLOOR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  19. Install the steering column. Refer to COLUMN, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  20. Connect the negative battery cable(s). Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
