Removal And Installation

REMOVAL 

WARNING:

Before servicing the steering column the airbag system must be disarmed. Failure to do so may result in accidental deployment of the airbag and possible personal injury.

WARNING:

When an undeployed airbag module is to be removed from the vehicle, first disconnect the battery ground cable and isolate it. Allow the system capacitor to discharge for a minimum of two minutes before starting any removal.

CAUTION:

Anytime the Steering Column Control Module (SCCM) is mounted on the steering column the steering shaft must be kept from turning or else SCCM damage will occur. Some vehicles do not have an internal lock mechanisms, so the steering column shaft must be preventing from rotating through use of a suitable tool.

NOTE:

In case of replacing steering column, connect a scan tool to initialize the steering angle sensor.

  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable(s). Refer to BATTERY DISCONNECT AND CONNECT .
  2. Remove the steering column opening cover. Refer to COVER, STEERING COLUMN OPENING, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  3. If equipped, remove the Vehicle System Interface Module (VSIM). Refer to MODULE, VEHICLE SYSTEM INTERFACE (VSIM), REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

  4. Remove the push pin (1) and remove the duct (2).
  5. Remove the stop lamp sensor. Refer to SWITCH, BRAKE FLUID LEVEL, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  6. Remove the Steering Column Control Module (SCCM). Refer to MODULE, STEERING COLUMN CONTROL (SCCM), REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

  7. Remove and DISCARD  the intermediate shaft upper pinch bolt (1).
  8. Remove the intermediate shaft from the steering column shaft.
  9. Disengage the wire harness routing clip from the steering column and disconnect the Brake Transmission Shifter Interlock (BTSI) wire harness connector, if equipped.

  10. Remove the two shifter cable bracket bolts (1) and disengage the shifter cable bracket from the steering column, if equipped.

  11. Disengage the shifter cable (2) from the shift lever assembly, if equipped.

  12. Disengage the wire harness routing clips (1, 2, and 3).

  13. Support the steering column (2) and remove the four steering column nuts (1).
  14. Remove the steering column.

INSTALLATION

  1. Position the steering column (2) to the instrument panel.
  2. Install the four steering column nuts (1) and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to COLUMN, TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
  3. Engage the wire harness routing clip to the steering column and connect the Brake Transmission Shifter Interlock (BTSI) wire harness connector, if equipped.

  4. Secure the wire harness routing clips (1, 2, and 3).

  5. Connect the shifter cable (2), if equipped.

  6. Position the shifter cable bracket to the steering column, then install the two shifter cable bracket bolts (1) and tighten to the proper torque specifications, if equipped. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .

  7. Install the intermediate shaft to the steering column shaft.
  8. Install a NEW  intermediate shaft upper pinch bolt (1) and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to COLUMN, TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
  9. Install the Steering Column Control Module (SCCM). Refer to MODULE, STEERING COLUMN CONTROL (SCCM), REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  10. Install the stop lamp sensor. Refer to SWITCH, BRAKE FLUID LEVEL, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

  11. Install the duct (2) and install the push pin (1).
  12. If equipped, install the Vehicle System Interface Module (VSIM). Refer to MODULE, VEHICLE SYSTEM INTERFACE (VSIM), REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  13. Install the steering column opening cover. Refer to COVER, STEERING COLUMN OPENING, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  14. Connect the negative battery cable(s). Refer to BATTERY DISCONNECT AND CONNECT .
