Replacing rear axle support
Failure to comply with the following instructions may result in the vehicle slipping off the vehicle hoist and critically injuring other persons.
Load the luggage compartment with a minimum of 100 kg before lowering/removing the rear axle support. This prevents the vehicle from tilting or sliding off the vehicle hoist!
When supporting components, make sure that:
- the vehicle can no longer be raised or lowered
- the vehicle does not lift off the locating plates of the vehicle hoist
Observe SAFETY INFORMATIONS for raising the vehicle
In order to avoid damage to vehicle hoist, perform weight compensation on vehicle.
Check the BMW part number of rear axle support before installing!
Necessary preliminary work:
- Remove REAR AXLE DIFFERENTIAL .
Remove ANTI-ROLL BAR .
Remove RIDE HEIGHT SENSOR .
Remove both CAMBER CONTROL ARMS FROM REAR AXLE SUPPORT .
Remove all control arms. Refer to REPLACE BOTTOM REAR WISHBONE , REPLACE TOP REAR WISHBONE , and REPLACE UPPER FRONT WISHBONE .
Remove both wheel carriers with output shaft, camber control arm and wishbones.
Take the rear axle support off the special tool with a helper and set onto a suitable support.
Installation note:
Use previous rear axle support as a template for modifying or replacing small parts.
Only if a new rear axle support with BMW part number 8 097 478 is installed on vehicles up to 07/16:
- Remove polyurethane rubber mount (1) variant (B) with BMW part number 8 094 690 from the new rear axle support with BMW part number 8 097 478 and install rubber mount (1) with elongated hole (2) variant (A) BMW part number 7 852 495 (REPLACE THE RUBBER MOUNT FOR THE REAR AXLE DIFFERENTIAL MOUNTING AT THE REAR ).
After installation:
- Carry out wheel alignment procedure. Refer to CARRY OUT KINEMATICS DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM WHEEL ALIGNMENT WITH VEHICLE LOAD UP TO DESIGN POSITION or KINEMATICS DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM WHEEL ALIGNMENT WITH RIDE HEIGHT MEASUREMENT WITHOUT LOADING THE VEHICLE .
