11 24 571 Replacing all connecting rod bearing shells: Notes

Prerequisite 

• Engine has been removed and has been disconnected from the front axle and the automatic transmission.

Preliminary work 

• Install and fasten special tool 0 495 196 (00 2 320) on special tool 0 495 187 (00 2 300) as shown.

  Engine mounting bracket on assembly jig, M14 x 95, Tightening torque: 130Nm

• Position and fasten special tool 2 413 082 on the special tool 0 495 196 (00 2 320) as shown.

  Hexagon screws from special tool set, Tightening torque: 105Nm

• Position the engine with a workshop crane and the special tool 0 490 567 LIFTING GEAR on the special tool 2 413 082 MOUNT .
• Make sure that the engine is correctly engaged using the special tool 2 411 718 ENGINE MOUNT on the special tool 2 413 082 MOUNT .
• Tighten the nuts of the special tool 2 413 082 MOUNT , until the clamping jaws fit completely on the special tool 2 411 718 ENGINE MOUNT .

• Drain the motor oil
• Refer to REMOVING BOTTOM CLEAN AIR PIPE
• Refer to REMOVING CHARGE AIR LINE

• Refer to REMOVING THE HIGH PRESSURE LINE BETWEEN THE RAIL AND THE HIGH PRESSURE PUMP

• Refer to REMOVING THE INJECTORS FOR CYLINDERS 1 TO 3

• Release screw (2) and remove the exhaust turbocharger support.

• Refer to REMOVING THE OIL RETURN LINE FOR THE EXHAUST TURBOCHARGER
• Turn the engine on the vibration damper. Refer to the relevant instructions under the procedure for CHECKING CAMSHAFT TIMING (AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION)  or CHECKING CAMSHAFT TIMING (MANUAL TRANSMISSION) .
• Block the crankshaft in the TDC firing position of cylinder 1. Refer to the relevant instructions under the procedure for CHECKING CAMSHAFT TIMING (AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION)  or CHECKING CAMSHAFT TIMING (MANUAL TRANSMISSION) .
• Refer to the relevant instructions for blocking the camshafts under procedure for CHECKING CAMSHAFT TIMING (AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION)  or CHECKING CAMSHAFT TIMING (MANUAL TRANSMISSION) .
• Refer to RELEASING THE VANOS CENTRAL VALVE
• Refer to REMOVING INTAKE ADJUSTER
• Refer to REMOVING EXHAUST CAMSHAFT ADJUSTER
• Disassemble the special tool 2 358 122. Refer to special tool instructions under procedure for CHECKING CAMSHAFT TIMING (AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION)  or CHECKING CAMSHAFT TIMING (MANUAL TRANSMISSION) .
• Refer to REMOVING THE INTAKE PLENUM
• Refer to REMOVING THE AUXILIARY COOLANT PUMP
• Refer to REMOVING THE FRONT SECTION OF THE COOLANT RETURN LINE
• Refer to REMOVING THE REAR SECTION OF THE COOLANT RETURN LINE (FRONT SECTION IS REMOVED)
• Refer to REMOVING THE COOLANT FEED LINE (COOLANT RETURN LINE IS REMOVED)
• Refer to DETACHING OIL SUPPLY LINE FROM THE ENGINE BLOCK
• Refer to REMOVING CYLINDER HEAD
• Refer to REMOVING THE CYLINDER HEAD GASKET
• Refer to SEAL THE OIL DUCT
• Refer to REMOVING OIL SUMP
• Refer to REMOVING THE OIL VACUUM PUMP
• Refer to REMOVING REAR TIMING CASE COVER 
• Refer to REMOVING TIMING CHAINS 
• Loosen all highlighted screws and remove the oil deflector (1). When re-installing:
  1. Replace screws
  2. Joining torque: 12 Nm
  3. Angle of rotation: 45°

• Detach all lower connecting rod bearings. Refer to the relevant instructions under procedure REMOVING ALL PISTONS WITH CONNECTING ROD .
• Refer to REMOVING CRANKSHAFT 

Follow-up work 

• Refer to INSTALLING THE CRANKSHAFT 
• Install all lower connecting rod bearings. Refer to the relevant instructions under procedure INSTALLING ALL LOWER CONNECTING ROD BEARINGS 
• Install the oil deflector
  1. Replace screws
  2. Joining torque: 12 Nm
  3. Angle of rotation: 45°
• Refer to INSTALLING THE TIMING CHAINS 
• Refer to INSTALLING THE REAR TIMING CASE COVER 
• Refer to INSTALLING THE OIL VACUUM PUMP
• Refer to REFITTING ENGINE OIL PAN
• Refer to CLEAN SEALING SURFACES
• Refer to INSTALLING THE CYLINDER HEAD GASKET
• Refer to INSTALLING THE CYLINDER HEAD
• Refer to SECURING THE OIL FEED LINE TO THE ENGINE BLOCK

• Refer to the relevant instructions for blocking the camshafts under procedure for CHECKING CAMSHAFT TIMING (AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION)  or CHECKING CAMSHAFT TIMING (MANUAL TRANSMISSION) .
• Refer to TIGHTENING THE VANOS CENTRAL VALVE
• Crank engine twice. Refer to CHECKING CAMSHAFT TIMING (AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION) 
• Disassemble all special tools
• Refer to INSTALLING THE COOLANT FEED LINE (COOLANT RETURN LINE IS REMOVED)
• Refer to INSTALLING THE REAR SECTION OF THE COOLANT RETURN LINE (FRONT SECTION REMOVED)
• Refer to INSTALLING THE FRONT SECTION OF THE COOLANT RETURN LINE
• Refer to INSTALLING THE AUXILIARY COOLANT PUMP
• Refer to INSTALLING CYLINDER HEAD COVER
• Refer to INSTALLING THE INTAKE PLENUM
• Install the support for the exhaust turbocharger. Replace screws. Tightening torque: 19 Nm.
• Refer to INSTALLING CATALYTIC CONVERTER
• Refer to INSTALLING THE OXYGEN SENSOR MONITOR
• Refer to INSTALLING LAMBDA OXYGEN SENSOR
• Refer to INSTALLING THE INJECTORS FOR THE CYLINDERS 4 TO 6
• Refer to INSTALLING THE INJECTORS FOR THE CYLINDERS 1 TO 3
• Refer to INSTALLING HIGH PRESSURE PUMP
• Refer to INSTALLING THE HIGH-PRESSURE LINE BETWEEN THE HIGH-PRESSURE RAIL AND THE HIGH-PRESSURE PUMP
• Refer to INSTALLING THE IGNITION COILS
• Refer to INSTALLING BOTH ACTUATORS

• Tighten the oil drain plug to 25 Nm.
  NOTE: Replace the sealing ring.
• Check engine oil level
• Top up the engine oil, as necessary
• Remove engine from assembly stand.
