Diagnostic Procedure

  1. Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, attempt to establish communication with IPC. If scan tool is able to communicate with IPC, go to next step. If scan tool is not able to communicate with IPC, go to step  3 .
  2. Using scan tool, display Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). If any IPC DTCs are set, perform appropriate DTC diagnostic test. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER DTC DEFINITIONS  table. If no IPC DTCs are set, go to step  11 .
  3. Using scan tool, attempt to establish communication with other systems on serial data line (PCM, BCM). If scan tool can establish communication with other systems, go to next step. If scan tool cannot establish communication with other systems, go to appropriate wiring diagram in DATA LINK CONNECTORS article.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect IPC harness connector. Turn ignition on. Using test light, backprobe between each IPC power circuit and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If test light comes on for each circuit, go to next step. If test light does not come on for each circuit, go to step  8 .
  5. Using test light, backprobe between each IPC ground circuit and battery voltage. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If test light comes on for each circuit, go to next step. If test light does not come on for each circuit, go to step  9 .
  6. Turn ignition off. Disconnect scan tool from DLC. Using DVOM, check for continuity in Gray and Purple wires between IPC harness connector terminal B1 (Gray wire) and DLC terminal No. 2 (Purple wire). If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, go to step  10 .
  7. Replace IPC. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to step  33 .
  8. Repair poor connection or open in appropriate IPC power circuit. Clear all DTCs. After repairs, go to step  33 .
  9. Repair poor connection or open in appropriate IPC ground circuit. Clear all DTCs. After repairs, go to step  33 .
  10. Repair poor connection or open in Gray or Purple wires between IPC harness connector terminal B1 and DLC terminal No. 2. Clear all DTCs. After repairs, go to step  33 .
  11. If ANTI-LOCK, LOW TRAC, TRAC OFF and LOW TIRE indicators operate properly, go to next step. If ANTI-LOCK, LOW TRAC, TRAC OFF or LOW TIRE indicators remain on or flash when engine is started, or when vehicle is driven, go to appropriate ANTI-LOCK article in BRAKES.
  12. If CHANGE OIL, charge, coolant temperature, LOW OIL, oil pressure or SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator remain on or flash when engine is started, or when vehicle is driven, locate and repair problem in engine or engine control system. Go to POWERTRAIN ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - GASOLINE - EXCEPT METRO, PRIZM & TRACKER article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  13. If automatic transmission control position indicator illumination operates properly when transmission shift selector changes position, go to next step. If automatic transmission control position indicator illumination does not operate properly when transmission shift selector changes position, go to POWERTRAIN ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - GASOLINE - EXCEPT METRO, PRIZM & TRACKER article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  14. If air bag indicator remains on or flashes when engine is started, or when vehicle is driven, locate and repair problem in air bag system. See AIR BAG SERVICE & REPAIR manual. If air bag indicator does not remain on or flash when engine is started, or when vehicle is driven, go to next step.
  15. If SECURITY indicator remains on or flashes when engine is started, or when vehicle is driven, go to appropriate wiring diagram in ANTI-THEFT article. If SECURITY indicator does not remain on or flash when engine is started, or when vehicle is driven, go to next step.
  16. If high beam indicator operates properly, go to next step. If high beam indicator is inoperative, remains on or flashes when engine is started, or when vehicle is driven, locate and repair problem in headlight system. See appropriate wiring diagram HEADLIGHT SYSTEMS & DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS article.
  17. If turn signal indicator operates properly, go to next step. If turn signal indicator is inoperative, remains on or flashes when engine is started, or when vehicle is driven, locate and repair problem in turn signal indicator system. See appropriate wiring diagram in EXTERIOR LIGHTS article.
  18. If CRUISE indicator operates properly, go to next step. If CRUISE indicator is inoperative or remains on after engine is started, diagnose cruise control system. See CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEMS - INTRIGUE article.
  19. If seat belt indicator operates properly, go to next step. If seat belt indicator is inoperative or comes on continuously after engine is started, or when vehicle is driven, go to AUDIBLE WARNINGS SYSTEM CHECK  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  20. If BRAKE indicator operates properly, go to next step. If BRAKE indicator is inoperative, go to BRAKE WARNING INDICATOR INOPERATIVE DURING BULB CHECK  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  21. If BRAKE warning indicator comes on when parking brake is set, go to next step. If BRAKE warning indicator does not come on when parking brake is set, go to BRAKE WARNING INDICATOR INOPERATIVE WITH PARKING BRAKE APPLIED  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  22. If BRAKE warning indicator comes on when brake fluid is low, go to next step. If BRAKE warning indicator does not come on when brake fluid is low, go to BRAKE WARNING INDICATOR INOPERATIVE WITH LOW BRAKE FLUID  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  23. If BRAKE indicator operates properly, go to next step. If BRAKE indicator is inoperative and an ABS malfunction is detected, go to BRAKE WARNING INDICATOR INOPERATIVE DURING ABS MALFUNCTION  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  24. If BRAKE indicator operates properly, go to next step. If BRAKE indicator is always on, go to BRAKE WARNING INDICATOR ALWAYS ON  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  25. If low coolant indicator operates properly, go to next step. If low coolant indicator is inoperative or comes on continuously after engine is started, or when vehicle is driven, go to CHECK COOLANT LEVEL WARNING INOPERATIVE (LOW COOLANT LEVEL INDICATOR INOPERATIVE)  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  26. If LOW WASHER FLUID indicator operates properly, go to next step. If LOW WASHER FLUID indicator is inoperative or comes on continuously after engine is started, or when vehicle is driven, go to LOW WASHER FLUID INDICATOR INOPERATIVE  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  27. If SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator operates properly, go to next step. If SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator is inoperative or comes on continuously after engine is started, or when vehicle is driven, go to POWERTRAIN ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - GASOLINE - EXCEPT METRO, PRIZM & TRACKER article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  28. If tachometer operates properly, go to next step. If tachometer is inoperative or functions erratically after engine is started, or when vehicle is driven, go to TACHOMETER IS INOPERATIVE OR INACCURATE  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  29. If speedometer/odometer operates properly, go to next step. If speedometer/odometer is inoperative or functions erratically after engine is started, or when vehicle is driven, go to POWERTRAIN ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - GASOLINE - EXCEPT METRO, PRIZM & TRACKER article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  30. If temperature gauge operates properly, go to next step. If temperature gauge is inoperative or functions erratically after engine is started, or when vehicle is driven, go to TEMPERATURE GAUGE IS INOPERATIVE OR INACCURATE  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  31. If fuel gauge or low fuel indicator operates properly, go to next step. If fuel gauge or low fuel indicator is inoperative, inaccurate, or functions erratically after engine is started, or when vehicle is driven, go to FUEL GAUGE IS INOPERATIVE OR INACCURATE  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  32. If IPC illumination operates properly, go to next step. If IPC illumination dims properly using instrument panel dimmer switch when ignition is turned on, locate and repair problem in interior light dimming system. See appropriate wiring diagram in ILLUMINATION/INTERIOR LIGHTS article.
  33. Turn ignition off. Reconnect all disconnected components and connectors. Connect scan tool to DLC. Turn ignition on. Clear DTCs. Start vehicle and recheck for IPC DTCs. If DTCs set in IPC, go to INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER DTC DEFINITIONS  table. If DTCs do not set in IPC, system is okay.
