Temperature Gauge Is Inoperative Or Inaccurate

  1. Perform POWERTRAIN ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - GASOLINE - EXCEPT METRO, PRIZM & TRACKER article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. Go to next step.
  2. Perform INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTICS. Go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to DLC. Turn ignition on and select SPECIAL FUNCTIONS menu on scan tool. Under SPECIAL FUNCTIONS, select OUTPUT TESTS and TEMPERATURE GAUGE SWEEP TEST. If temperature gauge needle moves from full cold, to full hot and back to full cold when sweep test is commanded, go to POWERTRAIN ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - GASOLINE - EXCEPT METRO, PRIZM & TRACKER article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If temperature gauge needle does not move from full cold, to full hot and back to full cold when sweep test is commanded, go to next step.
  4. Replace IPC. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTICS.
