DANGER Risk of explosion  caused by fuel igniting, risk of poisoning caused by inhaling and swallowing fuel as well as risk of injury to eyes and skin caused by contact with fuel. No fires, sparks, open flames or smoking. Pour fuels into suitable and appropriately marked containers only.
Wear protective clothing when handling fuel.

1 Secure vehicle against rolling away, shift transmission to neutral position, and release parking brake.

2 Deactivate easy entry and exit feature. Engine 177 in model 167 with code 275 (Driver's seat, electrically adjustable with memory function)  
3 Secure vehicle on vehicle lift.   AR00.60-P-1006A
4 Pump pneumatic pressure of suspension struts using vehicle diagnosis system to central reservoir. Engine 177 in model 167 with code 489 (AIRMATIC Dual Control/semi-active air suspension) except code 490 (Electrohydraulic suspension)

The complete wheels must not touch the ground.
Suspension struts can otherwise be predamaged and subsequently fail.
IMPORTANT Select menu item "Actuations" in active suspension and damping system control unit.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Pump pneumatic pressure using vehicle diagnosis system from central reservoir to suspension struts.

5 Remove cover for air/water duct.   AR83.10-P-1411ME
6 Remove partition upper part.    
7 Disconnect the ground line for the on-board electrical system battery (G1). Engine 177 in model 167 with code 489 (AIRMATIC Dual Control/semi-active air suspension) except code 490 (Electrohydraulic suspension) AR54.10-P-0003ME
8.1 Remove suspension strut electric controller units (M67, M67/1). Engine 177 in model 167 with code 489 (AIRMATIC Dual Control/semi-active air suspension) with code 490 (Electrohydraulic suspension) AR32.50-P-0047ME
8.2 Remove stabilizer bar. Engine 177 in model 167 with code 489 (AIRMATIC Dual Control/semi-active air suspension)
except code 490 (Electrohydraulic suspension)

9 Turn steering wheel to center position (front wheels in straight-ahead position) and fix steering wheel in place using holding device. NOTES
Do not turn steering wheel when steering coupling is removed.
The clock spring contact will otherwise be destroyed.

10 Drain coolant of the engine cooling circuit.   AR20.00-P-1142MNP
11 Drain coolant of low-temperature circuit. INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Only install upper engine cover after the leak test. AR09.41-P-6834MNP
12 Drain engine oil. Engine 177 in model 167 except code M036 (Maybach version)

13 Remove left and right underfloor panelings.   AR61.30-P-1001ME
14 Remove front wheel and tire assemblies.   AR40.10-P-1102ME
15 Remove air filter housing. Left air filter housing AR09.10-P-1151MNP
    Right air filter housing AR09.10-P-1152MNP
16 Remove expansion reservoir of the low-temperature circuit.   AR09.41-P-0001MNP
17 Discharge air conditioning system.   AR83.30-P-1760ME
18 Remove vacuum line (1) from the separating point on the firewall and seal openings with suitable stop plugs. SPECIAL TOOL Record plug Fig 4
19 Remove nut (2) and remove inerting gas line (3). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, gas distributor to partition wall *BA86.10-P-1003-03B 
20 Remove bleed line (4) of the front axle differential from the body.    
21 Remove fuel pressure via the service connection.   AR07.03-P-1460-01MNL
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Dust protection cap to service connection *BA07.03-P-1005-01H

22 Remove union nut (5) from the separating point, pull out fuel line (6) and remove from the cylinder head cover. IMPORTANT Collect escaping fuel using suitable means.
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Union nut, fuel line to fuel distributor/fuel system high-pressure pump

23 Seal openings of the fuel distributor and fuel line (6) with suitable stop plugs. SPECIAL TOOL Record plug Fig 4
24 Remove purge lines (7) from the separating point and seal openings with suitable stop plugs. SPECIAL TOOL Record plug Fig 4
25 Remove coolant hose (8) at separating point for firewall. IMPORTANT Capture escaping coolant using suitable means. AR20.20-P-7441-01RQ
26 Remove bleed line (9). IMPORTANT Capture escaping coolant using suitable means. AR20.20-P-7441-01RQ
27 Disconnect coolant hose (10) from the coolant line (11). Engine 177 in model 167
except code M036 (Maybach version)
IMPORTANT Capture escaping coolant using suitable means.

28 Remove coolant hose (12). IMPORTANT Capture escaping coolant using suitable means. AR20.20-P-7441-01RQ
29 Remove coolant hose (32). Engine 177 in model 167
with code M036 (Maybach version)

30 Remove coolant line (13, 15). IMPORTANT Capture escaping coolant using suitable means. AR20.20-P-7441-01RQ
31 Remove oil lines (14) from the engine oil cooler to the engine and seal openings with suitable stop plugs. Engine 177 in model 167
except code M036 (Maybach version)
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Install new sealing rings.

32 Remove coolant line (16) and place to one side. Engine 177 in model 167

IMPORTANT Capture escaping coolant using suitable means.

33 Remove nut (18), remove refrigerant line at the separating point and seal openings with suitable stop plugs.    
REFER TO CAPACITIES & SPECIFICATIONS Compressor oils (specification 362.1) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Install new seal and wet with compressor oil. BB00.40-P-0362-01A
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, refrigerant line connecting point *BA83.30-P-1002-01U 
    SPECIAL TOOL Record plug Fig 4
34 Remove nut (19), pull the refrigerant line out of the capacitor and seal the openings with suitable stop plugs.    
REFER TO CAPACITIES & SPECIFICATIONS Compressor oils (specification 362.1) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace sealing ring and moisten with compressor oil. BB00.40-P-0362-01A

35 Remove steering coupling from steering shaft.   AR46.10-P-8000ME

37 Disconnect engine wiring harness for removal of the engine.   AR15.18-P-1000-05MNO

38 Remove exhaust system. IMPORTANT Install engine carrier at the rear after removing the exhaust system. AR49.10-P-7142MNO
39 Remove propeller shaft.   AR41.10-P-0050MSC
40 Release and disconnect electrical connectors (20, 28).    
41 Remove electrical wiring harness (21) from the front axle carrier (27) and place to one side SPECIAL TOOL Dismantling tool Fig 5
42 Release and disconnect electrical connector of the right front brake wear sensor (S10/2). Only on right hand side of vehicle.  
43 Remove screw (22) and remove the connector coupling of right front brake wear sensor (S10/2) from the brake caliper (23). Only on right hand side of vehicle.  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, brake pad contact sensor to brake caliper *BA42.10-P-1004-10L 
44 Remove screw (24). Only on right hand side of vehicle.
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, holder for brake hose to steering knuckle

45 Remove screws (25). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, holder for brake hose to steering knuckle *BA33.20-P-1006-01W 
46 Remove left front-axle rpm sensor (L6/1) and right front-axle rpm sensor (L6/2) from the wheel carrier. INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace screw/bolts.  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Self-locking bolt, rpm sensor on front axle to steering knuckle *BA42.30-P-1001-01G 
47 Remove left and right brake caliper (23) from the wheel carriers and secure against falling down with the lines connected. Engine 177 in model 167 with code B06 (Silver brake calipers) with code B07 (AMG - ceramic brake system) with code U29 (AMG high-performance braking system) with code U70 (red-painted brake callipers) AR42.10-P-0070MEX

52 Support front axle carrier (27) and secure engine transmission unit against slipping and falling down using suitable means.

53 Remove rear engine carrier from the body.   AR22.10-P-4360MNP
54 Remove rear screws (31) and screws (29) and remove rear brackets from the front axle carrier (27). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, front axle carrier to longitudinal member *BA33.10-P-1001-01I 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, stiffening plate to body *BA33.10-P-1003-01I 
55 Remove front screws (31) and screws (30) and remove front brackets from the front axle carrier (27). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, front axle carrier to longitudinal member *BA33.10-P-1001-01I 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, stiffening plate to longitudinal member *BA33.10-P-1002-01I 
56 Lower front axle carrier (27) with the engine transmission unit.    
REFER TO SPECIAL TOOLS 000 588 03 62 00 Lifting platform INSTALLATION NOTES :
The engine transmission unit must not be in contact with body panels.
Otherwise damage will occur.
NOTES
Do not crush or kink or subject lines to tension.
Otherwise, the lines will be damaged.
IMPORTANT Aid of helper required.

57 Install in the reverse order.    
  Concluding tasks     
WARNING Risk of accident  from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury  (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts. AS00.00-Z-0005-01A
58 Perform engine test run. While doing so, check engine for proper operation and leak tightness.    
59 Perform wheel alignment measurement.   AR40.20-P-0200ME
