Engine Assembly: Installation

  1. INSTALL ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR 
    1. Install a new gasket to the sensor.
    2. Using a 19 mm deep socket wrench, install the temperature sensor.

      Torque: 20 N*m (204 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf)

  2. INSTALL OIL PRESSURE SWITCH ASSEMBLY 
    1. Apply adhesive to 2 or 3 threads of the oil pressure switch.

      Adhesive: 

      Toyota Genuine Adhesive 1344, Three Bond 1344 or equivalent

    2. Using a 24 mm deep socket wrench, install the oil pressure switch.

      Torque: 15 N*m (153 kgf*cm, 11 ft.*lbf) 

      NOTE: Do not start the engine within 1 hour after the installation.
  3. INSTALL FRONT DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER ASSEMBLY (for 4WD) (See  INSTALLATION  ) 
  4. INSTALL ENGINE OIL LEVEL SENSOR 
    1. Install the engine oil level sensor and a new gasket with the 4 bolts.

      Torque: 7.0 N*m (71 kgf*cm, 62 in.*lbf) 

  5. INSTALL IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the 6 ignition coils with the 6 bolts.

      Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf) 

  6. INSTALL V-BANK COVER BRACKET 
    1. Install the bracket with the bolt.

      Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf)

  7. INSTALL RADIO SETTING CONDENSER 
    1. Install the 2 condensers with the 2 bolts.

      Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf) 

  8. INSTALL KNOCK SENSOR (See  INSTALLATION  ) 
  9. INSTALL FUEL INJECTOR SEAL (for Direct Injection) (See  INSTALLATION  ) 
  10. INSTALL FUEL INJECTOR ASSEMBLY 
    1. for Port:

      Install the injector assembly (see INSTALLATION ).

    2. for Direct:

      Install the injector assembly (see INSTALLATION ).

  11. INSTALL NO. 1 FUEL DELIVERY PIPE SUB-ASSEMBLY (See  INSTALLATION  ) 
  12. INSTALL NO. 2 FUEL DELIVERY PIPE SUB-ASSEMBLY (See  INSTALLATION  ) 
  13. INSTALL NO. 3 FUEL PIPE SUB-ASSEMBLY (See  INSTALLATION  ) 
  14. INSTALL HIGH PRESSURE SIDE FUEL PUMP (See  INSTALLATION  ) 
  15. INSTALL NO. 2 FUEL PIPE SUB-ASSEMBLY (See  INSTALLATION  ) 
  16. INSTALL NO. 1 FUEL PIPE SUB-ASSEMBLY (See  INSTALLATION  ) 
  17. INSTALL FUEL PRESSURE PULSATION DAMPER ASSEMBLY (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  18. INSTALL FUEL TUBE SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the tube with the 2 bolts.

      Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf) 

  19. INSTALL INTAKE MANIFOLD (See  INSTALLATION  ) 
  20. INSTALL WATER HOSE JOINT

    1. Connect the 2 hoses.
    2. Install the pipe with the bolt.

      Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf) 

  21. INSTALL NO. 2 SURGE TANK STAY 
    NOTE: Make sure there is no oil on the bolts. If there is oil on the bolts, clean them before installing them.
    1. Install the stay with the bolt.

      Torque: 21 N*m (214 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf) 

  22. INSTALL INTAKE AIR SURGE TANK SUB-ASSEMBLY (See  INSTALLATION  ) 
  23. INSTALL WATER PUMP PULLEY (See  INSTALLATION  ) 
  24. INSTALL V-RIBBED BELT TENSIONER ASSEMBLY (for 2WD) 
    1. Temporarily install the V-ribbed belt tensioner with the 5 bolts.

      Each bolt length is as follows 

      BOLT LENGTH SPECIFICATION

      Bolt Length
      A 70 mm (2.76 in.)
      B 33 mm (1.30 in.)
    2. Install the V-ribbed belt tensioner by tightening the bolt 1 and 2 in the order shown in the illustration.

      Torque: 43 N*m (438 kgf*cm, 32 ft.*lbf) 

    3. Tighten the other bolts.

      Torque: 43 N*m (438 kgf*cm, 32 ft.*lbf)

  25. INSTALL V-RIBBED BELT TENSIONER ASSEMBLY (for 4WD) 
    1. Temporarily install the V-ribbed belt tensioner with the 4 bolts.

      Each bolt length is as follows 

      BOLT LENGTH SPECIFICATION

      Bolt Length
      A 70 mm (2.76 in.)
      B 33 mm (1.30 in.)
    2. Install the V-ribbed belt tensioner by tightening the bolt 1 and 2 in the order shown in the illustration.

      Torque: 43 N*m (438 kgf*cm, 32 ft.*lbf) 

    3. Tighten the other bolts.

      Torque: 43 N*m (438 kgf*cm, 32 ft.*lbf)

  26. INSTALL NO. 2 IDLER PULLEY SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the pulley and idler pulley cover plate with the bolt.

      Torque: 43 N*m (438 kgf*cm, 32 ft.*lbf)

  27. INSTALL INJECTOR DRIVER 
    1. Install the injector driver with the bolt and 2 nuts.

      Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf) 

  28. CONNECT ENGINE WIRE AND CONNECTOR 
    1. Install the engine wire and connector to the engine.
  29. INSTALL ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET (for 2WD) 
    1. Install the 2 brackets with the 8 bolts.

      Torque: 43 N*m (438 kgf*cm, 32 ft.*lbf) 

    2. Connect the 2 clamps to the LH side.

  30. INSTALL ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET (for 4WD) 
    1. Install the 2 brackets with the 8 bolts.

      Torque: 43 N*m (438 kgf*cm, 32 ft.*lbf) 

    2. Connect the 2 clamps to the LH side.

  31. INSTALL NO. 1 ENGINE COVER 
    1. Install the cover with the 3 clamps.

  32. INSTALL NO. 2 ENGINE COVER 
    1. Install the cover with the 3 clips.
    2. Connect the clamp.

  33. INSTALL NO. 1 ENGINE HANGER 
    1. Install the 2 engine hangers with the 4 bolts as shown in the illustration.

      Part No.: 

      ENGINE HANGERS SPECIFICATION

      No. 1 engine hanger 12281-31070
      Bolt 91671-F0822

      Torque: 33 N*m (336 kgf*cm, 24 ft.*lbf)

  34. REMOVE ENGINE STAND 
    1. Attach an engine sling device and hang the engine with a chain block.
    2. Lift the engine, and remove it from the engine stand.
  35. INSTALL ENGINE TO FRONT SUSPENSION CROSSMEMBER SUB-ASSEMBLY (for 2WD) 
    1. Install the engine to the front suspension crossmember with the 2 bolts.

      Torque: 35 N*m (357 kgf*cm, 26 ft.*lbf)

  36. INSTALL ENGINE TO FRONT SUSPENSION CROSSMEMBER SUB-ASSEMBLY (for 4WD) 
    1. Install the engine to the front suspension crossmember with the 2 bolts.

      Torque: 35 N*m (357 kgf*cm, 26 ft.*lbf)

  37. INSTALL DRIVE PLATE AND RING GEAR SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Using SST, hold the crankshaft.

      SST 09213-70011 (09213-70020), 09330-00021 

    2. Apply adhesive to 2 or 3 threads and under the heads of new bolts.

      Adhesive: 

      Toyota Genuine Adhesive 1344, Three Bond 1344 or equivalent

    3. Temporarily install the front spacer, drive plate and rear spacer with the 8 bolts.

    4. Tighten the 8 bolts uniformly in several steps in the order shown in the illustration.

      Torque: 83 N*m (850 kgf*cm, 61 ft.*lbf) 

      NOTE: Do not start the engine for at least 1 hour after installing.
  38. INSTALL AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY (for 2WD) (See  INSTALLATION  ) 
  39. INSTALL AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY (for 4WD) (See  INSTALLATION  ) 
  40. TIGHTEN DRIVE PLATE & TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SETTING BOLT (See  INSTALLATION  ) 
  41. INSTALL FLYWHEEL HOUSING SIDE COVER (See  INSTALLATION  ) 
  42. CONNECT HARNESS AND CONNECTOR TO AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION (for 2WD) (See  INSTALLATION  ) 
  43. CONNECT HARNESS AND CONNECTOR TO AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION (for 4WD) (See  AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY  ) 
  44. CONNECT WATER BYPASS HOSE 
    1. Connect the 2 hoses.

    2. Install the clamp with the bolt.

      Torque: 20 N*m (204 kgf*cm, 5 ft.*lbf) 

  45. INSTALL STARTER ASSEMBLY (See  INSTALLATION  ) 
  46. INSTALL EXHAUST MANIFOLD SUB-ASSEMBLY LH 
    1. Install a new gasket as shown in the illustration.

    2. Install the exhaust manifold to the cylinder head with the 6 nuts in the order shown in the illustration.

      Torque: 21 N*m (214 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf) 

      NOTE: Do not damage the stud bolt when installing the exhaust manifold.

    3. Connect the A/F sensor (for Bank 1 Sensor 1) connector.

  47. INSTALL EXHAUST MANIFOLD SUB-ASSEMBLY RH 
    1. Install a new gasket as shown in the illustration.

    2. Install the exhaust manifold to the cylinder head with the 6 nuts in the order shown in the illustration.

      Torque: 21 N*m (214 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf) 

      NOTE: Do not damage the stud bolt when installing the exhaust manifold.

    3. Connect the A/F sensor (for Bank 2 Sensor 1) connector.

  48. INSTALL OIL DIPSTICK GUIDE (for 2WD) 
    1. Install a new O-ring to the guide.
    2. Apply a light coat of engine oil to the O-ring.
    3. Push in the No. 1 guide end into the guide hole.
    4. Install the No. 1 guide with the bolt.

      Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf) 

    5. Connect the harness clamp.

    6. Install a new O-ring to the guide.
    7. Apply a light coat of engine oil to the O-ring.
    8. Push in the No. 2 guide end into the No. 1 guide hole.
    9. Install the No. 2 guide with the bolt.

      Torque: 21 N*m (214 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf) 

    10. Install the dipstick.

  49. INSTALL OIL DIPSTICK GUIDE (for 4WD) 
    1. Install a new O-ring to the guide.
    2. Apply a light coat of engine oil to the O-ring.
    3. Push in the No. 1 guide end into the guide hole.
    4. Install the No. 1 guide with the bolt.

      Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*, 7 ft.*lbf) 

    5. Connect the harness clamp.

    6. Install a new O-ring to the guide.
    7. Install the No. 2 guide with the bolt.

      Torque: 21 N*m (214 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf) 

    8. Install the dipstick.
  50. REMOVE NO. 1 ENGINE HANGER 
    1. Using the sling device and chain block to lift the engine, set the engine on an engine lifter.
    2. Remove the 4 bolts and 2 engine hangers.

  51. INSTALL ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION (for 2WD) 
    1. Operate the engine lifter, then install the engine to the vehicle.
    2. Install the engine and transmission with crossmember with the 10 bolts and 2 nuts.

      Torque: 167 N*m (1703 kgf*cm, 123 ft.*lbf) for nut A 

      204 N*m (2080 kgf*cm, 150 ft.*lbf) for bolt B 

      50 N*m (510 kgf*cm, 37 ft.*lbf) for bolt C 

      49 N*m (500 kgf*cm, 36 ft.*lbf) for bolt D

    3. Install the engine rear mounting member with the 4 bolts.

      Torque: 26 N*m (265 kgf*cm, 19 ft.*lbf) 

  52. INSTALL ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION (for 4WD) 
    1. Operate the engine lifter, then install the engine to the vehicle.
    2. Install the engine and transmission with crossmember with the 6 bolts and 2 nuts.

      Torque: 167 N*m (1703 kgf*cm, 123 ft.*lbf) for nut A 

      165 N*m (1683 kgf*cm, 122 ft.*lbf) for bolt B 

      50 N*m (510 kgf*cm, 37 ft.*lbf) for bolt C

    3. Install the engine rear mounting member with the 4 bolts.

      Torque: 26 N*m (265 kgf*cm, 19 ft.*lbf) 

  53. CONNECT FLOOR SHIFT GEAR SHIFTING ROD SUB-ASSEMBLY (for 2WD) (See  INSTALLATION  ) 
  54. CONNECT FLOOR SHIFT GEAR SHIFTING ROD SUB-ASSEMBLY (for 4WD) (See  COMPONENTS  ) 
  55. INSTALL FRONT DRIVE SHAFT LH (for 4WD) (See  INSTALLATION  ) 
  56. INSTALL FRONT DRIVE SHAFT RH (for 4WD) (See  INSTALLATION  )

    Perform the same procedure as for the LH side.

  59. INSTALL FRONT LOWER BALL JOINT LH (for 4WD) (See  INSTALLATION  ) 
  60. INSTALL FRONT LOWER BALL JOINT RH (for 4WD) 

    HINT:

    Perform the same procedure as for the LH side.

  61. INSTALL TIE ROD ASSEMBLY LH (for 2WD) (See  INSTALLATION  )

    HINT:

    Perform the same procedure as for the LH side.

  63. INSTALL TIE ROD ASSEMBLY LH (for 4WD) (See  INSTALLATION  )

  65. TEMPORARILY INSTALL FRONT SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY LH (for 2WD) 
    1. Insert the bolt from the rear of the vehicle, and set the front shock absorber lower side on the front suspension lower arm.
    2. Temporarily tighten the nut while holding the bolt.
  66. TEMPORARILY INSTALL FRONT SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY RH (for 2WD) 

    HINT:

    Perform the same procedure as for the LH side.

  67. INSTALL FRONT SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY LH (for 4WD) 
    1. Install the front shock absorber to the bracket lower with the bolt.

      Torque: 48 N*m (489 kgf*cm, 35 ft.*lbf) 

  68. INSTALL FRONT SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY RH (for 4WD) 

    HINT:

    Perform the same procedure as for the LH side.

  69. CONNECT HEIGHT CONTROL SENSOR LINK LH (for 2WD)(See  DISPOSAL  ) 
  70. CONNECT HEIGHT CONTROL SENSOR LINK RH (for 2WD) 

    HINT:

    Perform the same procedure as for the LH side.

  71. CONNECT HEIGHT CONTROL SENSOR LINK LH (for 4WD) (See  DISPOSAL  ) 
  72. CONNECT HEIGHT CONTROL SENSOR LINK RH (for 4WD) 

    HINT:

    Perform the same procedure as for the LH side.

  73. INSTALL STEERING SLIDING YOKE SUB-ASSEMBLY (for 2WD) 
    1. Align the matchmarks of the No. 2 intermediate shaft and steering sliding yoke.
    2. Temporarily install the bolt (B).
    3. Tighten the 2 bolts (A) and (B).

      Torque: 35 N*m (357 kgf*cm, 26 ft.*lbf)

  74. INSTALL NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY (for 4WD) 
    1. for Exterior Side:
      1. Align the matchmarks of the No. 2 intermediate shaft and power steering link.

    2. for Interior Side:
      1. Align the matchmarks of the No. 2 intermediate shaft and steering column.

    3. for Exterior Side:
      1. Install the bolt.

        Torque: 35 N*m (357 kgf*cm, 26 ft.*lbf)

    4. for Interior Side:
      1. Install the bolt.

        Torque: 35 N*m (357 kgf*cm, 26 ft.*lbf) 

      2. Install the clamp to the steering column hole cover.

    2. for Power Steering Link Side (for 2WD):
      1. Install the ground cable with the bolt (A) and (B).

        Torque: 8.0 N*m (82 kgf*cm, 71 in.*lbf) for bolt A 

        5.0 N*m (51 kgf*cm, 44 in.*lbf) for bolt B 

      2. Connect the 2 connectors (C).
      3. Connect the connector to the power steering link and securely lock the connector (D).
      4. Attach the 2 clamps (E).

    3. for Power Steering Link Side (for 4WD):
      1. Install the ground cable with the bolt (A) and (B).

        Torque: 5.0 N*m (51 kgf*cm, 44 in.*lbf) for bolt A 

        8.0 N*m (82 kgf*cm, 71 in.*lbf) for bolt B 

      2. Connect the 2 connectors (C).
      3. Connect the connector to the power steering link and securely lock the connector (D).
      4. Attach the 2 clamps (E).
      5. Connect the wire harness bracket to the frame with the bolt (G).

        Torque: 8.0 N*m (82 kgf*cm, 71 in.*lbf) 

    4. for RH Side:
      1. Install the battery positive (+) cable to the battery positive terminal with the nut as shown in the illustration (A) below.

        Torque: 13 N*m (133 kgf*cm, 10 ft.*lbf) 

      2. Connect the cable with the clamp as shown in the illustration (A) below.
      3. Install the No. 1 engine wire with the nut as shown in the illustration (B).

        Torque: 12 N*m (122 kgf*cm, 9 ft.*lbf) 

      4. Install the No. 1 relay block cover.

      5. Install the wire harness to the wire harness cover, and attach them as shown in the illustration (C).
      6. Install the No. 2 ground cable with the bolt as shown in the illustration (C).

        Torque: 9.0 N*m (92 kgf*cm, 80 in.*lbf) 

      7. Install the No. 4 relay block with the 2 bolts as shown in the illustration (D).

        Torque: 13 N*m (133 kgf*cm, 10 ft.*lbf) 

    5. for LH Side:
      1. Connect the No. 2 ground cable with the bolt as shown in the illustration (E).

        Torque: 8.8 N*m (90 kgf*cm, 78 in.*lbf) 

      2. Connect the ECM connectors, and set the connector holder to the ECM box as shown in the illustration (F).
      3. Connect the ECM's harness with the clamp as shown in the illustration (F).
      4. Install the ECM cover with the 3 bolts.

        Torque: 5.5 N*m (56 kgf*cm, 49 in.*lbf) 

    6. for Engine Bank 1 Side:
      1. Install the ground cable with the bolt as shown in the illustration (G).

        Torque: 21 N*m (214 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf) 

      2. Connect the ground cable with the clamp as shown in the illustration (G).
