Engine Assembly: Installation
- INSTALL ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR
- Install a new gasket to the sensor.
- Using a 19 mm deep socket wrench, install the temperature sensor.
Torque: 20 N*m (204 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf)
- INSTALL OIL PRESSURE SWITCH ASSEMBLY
- Apply adhesive to 2 or 3 threads of the oil pressure switch.
Adhesive:
Toyota Genuine Adhesive 1344, Three Bond 1344 or equivalent
- Using a 24 mm deep socket wrench, install the oil pressure switch.
Torque: 15 N*m (153 kgf*cm, 11 ft.*lbf)
NOTE: Do not start the engine within 1 hour after the installation.
- Apply adhesive to 2 or 3 threads of the oil pressure switch.
- INSTALL FRONT DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER ASSEMBLY (for 4WD) (See INSTALLATION )
- INSTALL ENGINE OIL LEVEL SENSOR
- Install the engine oil level sensor and a new gasket with the 4 bolts.
Torque: 7.0 N*m (71 kgf*cm, 62 in.*lbf)
- Install the engine oil level sensor and a new gasket with the 4 bolts.
- INSTALL IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY
- Install the 6 ignition coils with the 6 bolts.
Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf)
- Install the 6 ignition coils with the 6 bolts.
- INSTALL V-BANK COVER BRACKET
- Install the bracket with the bolt.
Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf)
- Install the bracket with the bolt.
- INSTALL RADIO SETTING CONDENSER
- Install the 2 condensers with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf)
- Install the 2 condensers with the 2 bolts.

- Install the tube with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf)
- Install the tube with the 2 bolts.
- INSTALL INTAKE MANIFOLD (See INSTALLATION )
- INSTALL WATER HOSE JOINT
- Connect the 2 hoses.
- Install the pipe with the bolt.
Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf)
- INSTALL NO. 2 SURGE TANK STAY NOTE: Make sure there is no oil on the bolts. If there is oil on the bolts, clean them before installing them.
- Install the stay with the bolt.
Torque: 21 N*m (214 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf)
- Install the stay with the bolt.
- INSTALL INTAKE AIR SURGE TANK SUB-ASSEMBLY (See INSTALLATION )
- INSTALL WATER PUMP PULLEY (See INSTALLATION )
- INSTALL V-RIBBED BELT TENSIONER ASSEMBLY (for 2WD)
- Temporarily install the V-ribbed belt tensioner with the 5 bolts.
Each bolt length is as follows
BOLT LENGTH SPECIFICATIONBolt Length A 70 mm (2.76 in.) B 33 mm (1.30 in.) - Install the V-ribbed belt tensioner by tightening the bolt 1 and 2 in the order shown in the illustration.
Torque: 43 N*m (438 kgf*cm, 32 ft.*lbf)
- Tighten the other bolts.

- Temporarily install the V-ribbed belt tensioner with the 5 bolts.
- INSTALL V-RIBBED BELT TENSIONER ASSEMBLY (for 4WD)
- Temporarily install the V-ribbed belt tensioner with the 4 bolts.
Each bolt length is as follows

- Temporarily install the V-ribbed belt tensioner with the 4 bolts.
- INSTALL NO. 2 IDLER PULLEY SUB-ASSEMBLY
- Install the pulley and idler pulley cover plate with the bolt.
Torque: 43 N*m (438 kgf*cm, 32 ft.*lbf)
- Install the pulley and idler pulley cover plate with the bolt.
- INSTALL INJECTOR DRIVER
- Install the injector driver with the bolt and 2 nuts.
Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf)
- Install the injector driver with the bolt and 2 nuts.
- CONNECT ENGINE WIRE AND CONNECTOR
- Install the engine wire and connector to the engine.
- INSTALL ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET (for 2WD)
- Install the 2 brackets with the 8 bolts.
Torque: 43 N*m (438 kgf*cm, 32 ft.*lbf)
- Connect the 2 clamps to the LH side.
- Install the 2 brackets with the 8 bolts.
- INSTALL ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET (for 4WD)
- Install the 2 brackets with the 8 bolts.
Torque: 43 N*m (438 kgf*cm, 32 ft.*lbf)
- Connect the 2 clamps to the LH side.
- Install the 2 brackets with the 8 bolts.
- INSTALL NO. 1 ENGINE COVER
- Install the cover with the 3 clamps.
- INSTALL NO. 2 ENGINE COVER
- Install the cover with the 3 clips.
- Connect the clamp.
- INSTALL NO. 1 ENGINE HANGER
- REMOVE ENGINE STAND
- Attach an engine sling device and hang the engine with a chain block.
- Lift the engine, and remove it from the engine stand.
- INSTALL ENGINE TO FRONT SUSPENSION CROSSMEMBER SUB-ASSEMBLY (for 2WD)
- Install the engine to the front suspension crossmember with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 35 N*m (357 kgf*cm, 26 ft.*lbf)
- Install the engine to the front suspension crossmember with the 2 bolts.
- INSTALL ENGINE TO FRONT SUSPENSION CROSSMEMBER SUB-ASSEMBLY (for 4WD)
- Install the engine to the front suspension crossmember with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 35 N*m (357 kgf*cm, 26 ft.*lbf)
- Install the engine to the front suspension crossmember with the 2 bolts.
- INSTALL DRIVE PLATE AND RING GEAR SUB-ASSEMBLY
- Using SST, hold the crankshaft.
SST 09213-70011 (09213-70020), 09330-00021
- Apply adhesive to 2 or 3 threads and under the heads of new bolts.
Adhesive:
Toyota Genuine Adhesive 1344, Three Bond 1344 or equivalent
- Temporarily install the front spacer, drive plate and rear spacer with the 8 bolts.
- Tighten the 8 bolts uniformly in several steps in the order shown in the illustration.
Torque: 83 N*m (850 kgf*cm, 61 ft.*lbf)
NOTE: Do not start the engine for at least 1 hour after installing.
- Using SST, hold the crankshaft.

- CONNECT HARNESS AND CONNECTOR TO AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION (for 2WD) (See INSTALLATION )
- CONNECT HARNESS AND CONNECTOR TO AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION (for 4WD) (See AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY )
- CONNECT WATER BYPASS HOSE
- Connect the 2 hoses.
- Install the clamp with the bolt.
Torque: 20 N*m (204 kgf*cm, 5 ft.*lbf)
- INSTALL STARTER ASSEMBLY (See INSTALLATION )
- INSTALL EXHAUST MANIFOLD SUB-ASSEMBLY LH
- Install a new gasket as shown in the illustration.
- Install the exhaust manifold to the cylinder head with the 6 nuts in the order shown in the illustration.
Torque: 21 N*m (214 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf)
NOTE: Do not damage the stud bolt when installing the exhaust manifold. - Connect the A/F sensor (for Bank 1 Sensor 1) connector.
- INSTALL EXHAUST MANIFOLD SUB-ASSEMBLY RH
- Install a new gasket as shown in the illustration.
- Install the exhaust manifold to the cylinder head with the 6 nuts in the order shown in the illustration.
Torque: 21 N*m (214 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf)
NOTE: Do not damage the stud bolt when installing the exhaust manifold. - Connect the A/F sensor (for Bank 2 Sensor 1) connector.
- INSTALL OIL DIPSTICK GUIDE (for 2WD)
- Install a new O-ring to the guide.
- Apply a light coat of engine oil to the O-ring.
- Push in the No. 1 guide end into the guide hole.
- Install the No. 1 guide with the bolt.
Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf)
- Connect the harness clamp.
- Install a new O-ring to the guide.
- Apply a light coat of engine oil to the O-ring.
- Push in the No. 2 guide end into the No. 1 guide hole.
- Install the No. 2 guide with the bolt.
Torque: 21 N*m (214 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf)
- Install the dipstick.
- INSTALL OIL DIPSTICK GUIDE (for 4WD)
- Install a new O-ring to the guide.
- Apply a light coat of engine oil to the O-ring.
- Push in the No. 1 guide end into the guide hole.
- Install the No. 1 guide with the bolt.
Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*, 7 ft.*lbf)
- Connect the harness clamp.
- Install a new O-ring to the guide.
- Install the No. 2 guide with the bolt.
Torque: 21 N*m (214 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf)
- Install the dipstick.
- REMOVE NO. 1 ENGINE HANGER
- Using the sling device and chain block to lift the engine, set the engine on an engine lifter.
- Remove the 4 bolts and 2 engine hangers.
- INSTALL ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION (for 2WD)
- Operate the engine lifter, then install the engine to the vehicle.
- Install the engine and transmission with crossmember with the 10 bolts and 2 nuts.
Torque: 167 N*m (1703 kgf*cm, 123 ft.*lbf) for nut A
204 N*m (2080 kgf*cm, 150 ft.*lbf) for bolt B
50 N*m (510 kgf*cm, 37 ft.*lbf) for bolt C
49 N*m (500 kgf*cm, 36 ft.*lbf) for bolt D
- Install the engine rear mounting member with the 4 bolts.
Torque: 26 N*m (265 kgf*cm, 19 ft.*lbf)

- Operate the engine lifter, then install the engine to the vehicle.
- Install the engine and transmission with crossmember with the 6 bolts and 2 nuts.

165 N*m (1683 kgf*cm, 122 ft.*lbf) for bolt B

- Install the engine rear mounting member with the 4 bolts.

- Install the ground cable with the nut to the RH side.

- Install the ground cable with the nut to the RH side.
- for Power Steering Link Side (for 2WD):
- Install the ground cable with the bolt (A) and (B).
Torque: 8.0 N*m (82 kgf*cm, 71 in.*lbf) for bolt A
5.0 N*m (51 kgf*cm, 44 in.*lbf) for bolt B
- Connect the 2 connectors (C).
- Connect the connector to the power steering link and securely lock the connector (D).
- Attach the 2 clamps (E).
- Install the ground cable with the bolt (A) and (B).
- for Power Steering Link Side (for 4WD):
- Install the ground cable with the bolt (A) and (B).
Torque: 5.0 N*m (51 kgf*cm, 44 in.*lbf) for bolt A
8.0 N*m (82 kgf*cm, 71 in.*lbf) for bolt B
- Connect the 2 connectors (C).
- Connect the connector to the power steering link and securely lock the connector (D).
- Attach the 2 clamps (E).
- Connect the wire harness bracket to the frame with the bolt (G).
Torque: 8.0 N*m (82 kgf*cm, 71 in.*lbf)
- Install the ground cable with the bolt (A) and (B).
- for RH Side:
- Install the battery positive (+) cable to the battery positive terminal with the nut as shown in the illustration (A) below.
Torque: 13 N*m (133 kgf*cm, 10 ft.*lbf)
- Connect the cable with the clamp as shown in the illustration (A) below.
- Install the No. 1 engine wire with the nut as shown in the illustration (B).
Torque: 12 N*m (122 kgf*cm, 9 ft.*lbf)
- Install the No. 1 relay block cover.
- Install the wire harness to the wire harness cover, and attach them as shown in the illustration (C).
- Install the No. 2 ground cable with the bolt as shown in the illustration (C).
Torque: 9.0 N*m (92 kgf*cm, 80 in.*lbf)
- Install the No. 4 relay block with the 2 bolts as shown in the illustration (D).
Torque: 13 N*m (133 kgf*cm, 10 ft.*lbf)
- Install the battery positive (+) cable to the battery positive terminal with the nut as shown in the illustration (A) below.
- for LH Side:
- Connect the No. 2 ground cable with the bolt as shown in the illustration (E).
Torque: 8.8 N*m (90 kgf*cm, 78 in.*lbf)
- Connect the ECM connectors, and set the connector holder to the ECM box as shown in the illustration (F).
- Connect the ECM's harness with the clamp as shown in the illustration (F).
- Install the ECM cover with the 3 bolts.
Torque: 5.5 N*m (56 kgf*cm, 49 in.*lbf)
- Connect the No. 2 ground cable with the bolt as shown in the illustration (E).
- for Engine Bank 1 Side:
- Install the ground cable with the bolt as shown in the illustration (G).
Torque: 21 N*m (214 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf)
- Connect the ground cable with the clamp as shown in the illustration (G).
- Install the ground cable with the bolt as shown in the illustration (G).
- for Automatic Transmission Side:
- CONNECT UNION TO CHECK VALVE HOSE

- Install the air cleaner inlet with the bolt.

- INSTALL V-BANK COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY
- Attach the 3 clips to install the engine cover.NOTE:
- Be sure to engage the clips securely.
- Do not apply excessive force or do not hit the cover to engage the clips. This may cause the cover to break.
- Attach the 3 clips to install the engine cover.
- INSTALL ENGINE ROOM SIDE COVER LH
- Install the side cover with the 3 clips.
- INSTALL ENGINE ROOM COVER SIDE RH
- Install the side cover with the 2 clips.
- INSTALL COOL AIR INTAKE DUCT SEAL
- Install the intake duct seal with the 7 clips.
- STABILIZE SUSPENSION (See DISPOSAL )
- TIGHTEN FRONT SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY LH (for 2WD) (See DISPOSAL )
- TIGHTEN FRONT SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY RH (for 2WD)

- INSTALL NO. 2 ENGINE UNDER COVER (for 2WD)
- Install the under cover with the 4 screws, 2 grommets and 2 spacers.
- INSTALL REAR ENGINE UNDER COVER LH (for 2WD)
- INSTALL REAR ENGINE UNDER COVER RH (for 2WD)
- INSTALL ENGINE UNDER COVER (for 2WD)
- INSTALL ENGINE UNDER COVER (for 4WD)
- PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
- INSTALL FRONT WHEELS
Torque: 103 N*m (1050 kgf*cm, 76 ft.*lbf)
- INSPECT AND ADJUST FRONT WHEEL ALIGNMENT
- Check and adjust the front wheel alignment (see FRONT WHEEL ALIGNMENT ).
- PERFORM RESET MEMORY (for 2WD)
- Perform the RESET MEMORY procedures (A/T initialization) (see MANUAL SHIFTING TEST ).
- PERFORM RESET MEMORY (for 4WD)
- Perform the RESET MEMORY procedures (A/T initialization) (see HYDRAULIC TEST ).
