Risk of scalding!
- Conduct all work in the vehicle wearing appropriate personal protective equipment only.
Collect and dispose of emerging fluids. Observe country-specific waste disposal regulations.
Grease the threads of new oxygen sensors thinly and evenly.
For oxygen sensors that are reused, the following should be observed:
Thinly and evenly grease the oxygen sensor on the thread only. Do not clean the part of the oxygen sensor that does not protrude into the exhaust line (sensor ceramics) and do not grease.

is positioned flush with the marks of the engine block.
- Check the camshaft position of cylinder bank 2.
The cams (1) should be in the position shown.
- Make sure that the increment wheels (2) are aligned with the camshaft bearing caps.
- Ensure that the polished surfaces of the camshafts (1) point upward.
- Ensure that the rounded surfaces (1) are pointing down at the cylinder head.
- Check timing again and assess.
Relaxing chain tensioner on bank 2 for checking or setting timing
Damage to timing chain or timing chain drive.
Turning the engine without chain tensioner or special tool can result in damage to the timing chain and timing chain drive.
- Always turn the engine with the chain tensioner or the special tool.
- Make sure that the chain drive is loaded at the same time on the central bolt of the engine and on the VANOS exhaust central valve.
The movement of the chain tensioner piston must be observed in this process.
- To do this, carry out the following steps at the same time:
- Keep the VANOS central valve on the exhaust side under tension in clockwise direction with a support person.
The VANOS central valve on the exhaust side must not be twisted.
- Rotate the engine counterclockwise at the central bolt.

.NOTE: Do not slide the special tool 0 493 882 (11 9 190) (2) too far in; otherwise, it will collide with other components when the crankshaft is turning.
- Position reversible ratchet.
- Rotate the engine on the central bolt clockwise until the special tool lines up with the engine block marks.
- Attach the special tool 0 496 366 (11 8 570) (3)
to the vibration absorber with a screw from the belt pulley (2)
and hand-tighten.
- With the crankshaft in the installation position, use the special tool 0 493 882 (11 9 190) (1) to insert it onto the marks and fasten.
- Ensure that the polished surfaces of the camshafts (1) point upward.
- Ensure that the rounded surfaces (1) are pointing down at the cylinder head.
Check
- Check the camshaft position of cylinder bank 2.
The cams (1) should be in the position shown.
The increment wheels (2) must be flush with the exhaust camshaft bearing cap and the intake camshaft bearing cap.
The ground surfaces of the camshaft must face up.
