Completely removing and installing front axle with engine and transmission (X5 M)
Special tools required:
- 32 1 270.
Recycling:
Catch and dispose of escaping fuel with auxiliary materials.
Observe country-specific waste disposal regulations.
Attention!
Seal openings or lines on air conditioning with special tool 32 1 270 to prevent escape of media and contamination.
Necessary preliminary work
- Disconnect the BATTERY EARTH LEAD
- Move ENGINE COMPARTMENT LID into working position
- DRAW OFF THE AIR CONDITIONING
- DRAIN COOLANT
- Release the refrigerant line at the CAPACITOR
- Remove both TENSION STRUTS FROM SPRING STRUT DOME
- Remove FAN COWL .
- Remove both FRONT WHEELS
- Remove REINFORCEMENT PLATE
- Remove REAR UNDERBODY PROTECTION
- Remove PROPELLER SHAFT
- Removing FRONT LEFT AND RIGHT WHEEL ARCH COVER
- Remove the STEERING ASSEMBLY COVER at the top/bottom, left and right
- Detach engine oil line from the ENGINE OIL COOLER
- Release steering spindle on STEERING GEAR
- Release LEFT AND RIGHT BRAKE CALIPER and tie up
- Disconnect the PLUG CONNECTION at the wheel speed sensor, left and right
- Remove POWER DISTRIBUTION BOX
- Remove the bracket for the POWER DISTRIBUTION MODULE
- Removing the CONTROL UNIT (DME), CYLINDER 1-4 and CONTROL UNIT (DME) CYLINDERS 5-8
- Detach POSITIVE BATTERY LEAD from the positive battery connection point
- Releasing coolant hoses from RADIATOR
- Disconnect the tank ventilation line at the separation point
- Disconnect the line at the tank vent valve
- Remove COOLANT EXPANSION TANK
- Release the coolant line at the HEAT EXCHANGER
- Remove HEATER VALVE
- Removing the AUXILIARY COOLANT PUMP
- Release the VACUUM HOSE for the brake servo
- Loosen OIL TANK for hydraulic steering
- Detach wiring harness from steering gear
Attention!
Coordinate determination always begins at the top.
Position engine assembly on table top A .
Position transmission on table top B .
Table top is adjustable in the longitudinal direction (see arrow).
Structure of table lift.
Position the mounting element with the fixture (40) on tabletop B for the transmission cross member at coordinates 2/2 and 2/7 .
Position the mounting element with the fixture (80) on tabletop B under the transmission at coordinates 6/4 .
Position the mounting element with the fixture (60) on tabletop A for the front axle support at coordinates 2/2 ; 6/2 , 2/7 and 6/7 .
Position the fixture (10) on tabletop A for the swivel bearings at coordinates 3/1 and 4/8 .
Attention!
Removal weight approx. 150 kg to 300 kg.
Check payload of vehicle, empty if necessary.
Load front footwell with sandbags if necessary, approx. 100 kg.
Note safety instructions of TABLE LIFT .
Position the mounting elements with the fixtures (60) on the left and right at the front axle support (1).
Position the mounting elements with the fixture (80) at the automatic transmission.
Position the mounting elements with the fixtures (40) at the transmission cross member (1).
Position mounting (10) at the front left and right on steering stub (1) and screw tight.
Screw tight all the mountings on the lifting table.
- Disassemble the front axle support
- Detach transmission cross member
- Release both swivel bearing at the top wishbone
- Release both front spring struts at the bottom wishbone
- Slowly lower the lifting table and see that all components have freedom of movement
