DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
DANGER Risk of fire  due to ignition of R1234yf refrigerant on hot components. Risk of poisoning  caused by inhaling overheated refrigerant vapors. Risk of injury  to skin and eyes caused by contact with escaped R1234yf refrigerant and when working on pressurized parts. Risk of explosion due to formation of ignitable refrigerant/air mixtures Never perform welding work on or near a closed air conditioning system. No smoking or open flames. Wear safety glasses and protective gloves. Work only in well ventilated rooms. Carry out repair work on the air conditioning system circuit only after the system has been evacuated. DANGER Risk of explosion  caused by fuel igniting, risk of poisoning caused by inhaling and swallowing fuel as well as risk of injury to eyes and skin caused by contact with fuel. No fires, sparks, open flames or smoking. Pour fuels into suitable and appropriately marked containers only. Wear protective clothing when handling fuel. AS47.00-Z-0001-01A

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Put transmission into neutral position.    
2 Secure vehicle against rolling away and release parking brake.    
3 Secure vehicle on the vehicle lift and lift.   AR00.60-P-1006A
4 Remove front module. Engine 260 in model 118, 177, 247 with transmission 724.1

5 Remove air filter housing.   AR09.10-P-1150MFC
6 Remove battery carrier.   AR54.10-P-0028MFA
7 Remove upper engine cover.    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE   INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Do not install upper engine cover until after the leak test. AP01.10-P-2405-01C
8 Remove clamps (6), remove inerting line (5) from the separating point, and seal openings with suitable stop plugs. Engine 260 in model 118, 177, 247 with transmission 724.1 with code 2U8 (Alternative refrigerant) AR86.10-P-0119MFC

9 Discharge air conditioning system.   AR83.30-P-1760MFA
10 Drain off coolant.   AR20.00-P-1142MFC

12 Remove the coolant expansion reservoir.   AR20.30-P-4949MFD

14 Remove coolant lines (2, 3) and seal openings with suitable stop plugs and protective covers.   AR20.20-P-7441-01RQ

17 Release and disconnect electrical connector (9) of fan unit.    
18 Remove the electric line from the bracket (35)    
19 Remove charge air hose (7) and seal openings with protective covers. Engine 260 in model 118, 177, 247 with transmission 724.1 except code M016 (Uprated engine) AR09.41-P-1311-01AL

20 Separate refrigerant line (11) at separating point (12) and seal openings with suitable stop plugs.    
REFER TO CAPACITIES & SPECIFICATIONS Compressor oils (specification 362.1) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace sealing ring and moisten with compressor oil. BB00.40-P-0362-01A
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, refrigerant line connecting point *BA83.30-P-1002-01T

21 Remove screw (14) and remove refrigerant line (13) from the engine mount. Engine 260 in model 118, 177, 247 with transmission 724.1 except code M016 (Uprated engine)
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw, refrigerant line to engine mount/body
*BA83.30-P-1004-01T 
22 Remove the nuts (15) on the condenser, remove the refrigerant lines and seal the openings with suitable stop plugs.    
REFER TO CAPACITIES & SPECIFICATIONS Compressor oils (specification 362.1) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace sealing rings and moisten with compressor oil. BB00.40-P-0362-01A
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, refrigerant line to condenser *BA83.30-P-1007-01T

23 Remove radiator package upward out of the elastomer bearings on the crossmember (24), place down on a suitable base, and capture escaping coolant with rags.    
24 Remove coolant hose (34) from the separating point (33) and seal openings with protective covers.   AR20.20-P-7441-01RQ

25 Remove vacuum line (16) from vacuum pump and seal openings with suitable stop plugs. SPECIAL TOOL Set of plugs Fig 7
26 Unclip vacuum line (16) from the charge air cooler. Engine 260 in model 118, 177, 247 with transmission 724.1 with code M016 (Uprated engine)  
27 Release and disconnect purge line at separating point (18) and seal with suitable stop plugs. SPECIAL TOOL Record plug Fig 8
28 Remove noise insulation of the high-pressure pump.    
29 Remove fuel hose (17) from the high-pressure pump and seal openings with suitable stop plugs. SPECIAL TOOL Pliers for click clamps Fig 3

30 Unclip fuel hose (17) from the charge air cooler. Engine 260 in model 118, 177, 247 with transmission 724.1 with code M016 (Uprated engine)  
31 Remove coolant hose (19) at separating point (28) and seal openings with protective covers.   AR20.20-P-7441-01RQ

32 Unlock the electrical connector (29) on the automatic transmission, disconnect it and remove the electrical wiring harness on the automatic transmission.    
33 Remove bracket (35). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, air filter housing bracket to body *BA09.10-P-1001-01Q 
34 Release and disconnect electrical connector (30).    
35 Remove cover cap (31).    
36 Remove nuts (32), remove electrical wiring harness from the stud bolts, and place to one side. TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, starter wiring harness to current limiter *BA54.10-P-1006-01D 
37 Remove brackets (20) from the crossmember (24).    
38 Remove the expansion rivet (42). Engine 260 in model 118, 177, 247 with transmission 724.1 with code M016 (Uprated engine)

39 Remove bolts (21). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, radiator support to mounting support *BA62.30-P-1004-02O 
40 Remove screws (22) and remove connecting carriers (23) together with crossmember (24). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, connecting carrier to front axle carrier/radiator support *BA62.30-P-1003-02O 
41 Remove lower engine stabilizer mount (25).   AR22.10-P-1155MFC
42 Remove propeller shaft. Engine 260 in model 118, 177, 247 with transmission 724.1 with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive) AR41.10-P-0050MFA
43 Remove screws (26) from the separating point of the exhaust system. TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, front exhaust system to center exhaust system *BA49.10-P-1006-02Q 
44 Remove front axle shafts.   AR33.30-P-0620MFA
45 Remove heat shield of front axle drive shaft.   AR49.00-P-1000-05MFC
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, heat shield to engine carrier/crankcase/oil pan/cylinder head *BA22.10-P-1002-02E 
46 Remove coolant hose package on the engine side from the separating points (arrows) and seal openings with protective covers. Engine 260 in model 118, 177, 247 with transmission 724.1 with code M016 (Uprated engine) AR20.20-P-7441-01RQ

47 Unclip coolant hose package from the brackets (43, 44) and remove. Engine 260 in model 118, 177, 247 with transmission 724.1 with code M016 (Uprated engine)  
48 Install engine support fixture to remove engine transmission unit.   AR01.10-P-0106MFA 
49 Remove right engine mount.   AR22.10-P-1102MFD
50 Remove screws (27) from the transmission mount. TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw, transmission mount to body/transmission/mounting support *BA22.10-P-1010-03P 
51 Move engine transmission unit with lifting platform out of vehicle in forward direction.    
REFER TO SPECIAL TOOLS 000 588 25 62 00 Lift table   WS01.00-P-0264A
    NOTES No lines and hoses may be damaged when removing/inserting engine with transmission.
Otherwise leaks and engine damage can occur.
IMPORTANT Aid of helper required.

52 Install in the reverse order.    
53 Perform commissioning of transmission. When replacing or repairing the transmission.

54 Check engine oil level and correct if necessary.    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE   NOTES Never pour in engine oil to above the maximum value.
Engine damage will occur otherwise.

55 Fill transmission with oil. When replacing or repairing the transmission.
IMPORTANT New transmission is delivered empty.

56 Check transmission oil level and correct if necessary.   AR27.00-P-0104MFA
WARNING Risk of accident  from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury  (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts. AS00.00-Z-0005-01A
57 Perform engine test run; while doing so, check engine and transmission for proper operation and leak tightness.    
58   Check headlamp adjustment and correct.

59 Install upper engine cover.
