Remove/Install Timing Case Cover - AR01.40-P-8000MRI

WARNING Risk of injury  . Skin or eye injuries may result when handling hot or glowing objects. Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses, if necessary. AS00.00-Z-0002-01A
WARNING Risk of injury  to skin and eyes suffering scalding from contact with hot coolantspray. Risk of poisoning  from swallowing coolant. Do not open cooling system unless coolant temperature is below 90°C. Open cap slowly and release the overpressure. Do not pour coolant into beverage containers.
Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses.

Deburr repair panels.

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Deactivate Memory Package using the COMAND operating unit. Engine 264 in model 205, 253
with code 275 (Driver's seat, electrically adjustable with memory function)
 
2 Move front wheels to straight-ahead position and fix steering wheel in place with holding device. NOTES
Do not turn steering wheel when steering coupling is disconnected.
Clock spring contact will otherwise be destroyed.
REMOVAL IMPORTANT When removing the oil pan, the steering coupling is disconnected.

3 Secure vehicle on vehicle lift.   AR00.60-P-1006A
4 Release pressure in AIRMATIC system using vehicle diagnosis system. Engine 264 in model 205, 253
with code 489 (AIRMATIC Dual Control/semi-active air suspension)
 
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS     AD00.00-P-2000-04B
5 Drain off coolant. INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Only install lower Engine compartment paneling after leak test. AR20.00-P-1142MRI
6 Remove belt pulley. INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Do not install upper Engine cover until after the leak test. AR03.30-P-1700MRI
7.1 Remove belt-driven starter alternator (M1/10), place to one side with connected lines, and secure against falling down. Engine 264 in model 205, 253
with code B01 (48V technology)

7.2 Remove alternator (G2), place to one side with connected lines, and secure against falling down. Engine 264 in model 205, 253

8 Remove refrigerant compressor with magnetic clutch (A9/7), place to one side with connected lines, and secure against falling down.   AR83.55-P-5310MRI

10 Remove coolant hose (11) between the thermostat (12) and left coolant pipe (13). SPECIAL TOOL Hose clamp pliers Fig 2
11 Remove coolant hose (7) from coolant pipe and place to one side. SPECIAL TOOL Hose clamp pliers Fig 2
12 Remove coolant hose (6). SPECIAL TOOL Hose clamp pliers Fig 2
13 Remove coolant hose (10). SPECIAL TOOL Hose clamp pliers Fig 2
14 Remove full load bleed line.   AR01.20-P-0020MRI
15 Release and disconnect the electrical connector (2).    
16 Unclip electric line (8) from timing case cover (1) and place to one side.    
17 Release and disconnect electrical connector (3).    
18 Remove screws (9). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, cylinder head to timing case cover *BA01.30-P-1002-01BA 
19 Remove screws of the timing case cover (1) in the opposite direction to the tightening procedure. Tightening procedure for timing case cover AR01.40-P-8000-02MRH 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, timing case cover to crankcase *BA01.40-P-1001-03A 
20 Remove timing case cover (1).
Notes on sealant path for timing case cover
NOTES
When removing, do not pound in any tool between the timing case cover (1) and crankcase.
Sealing surfaces will otherwise be damaged.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Apply sealant to timing case cover (1).

21 Change adapter line (4). When replacing timing case cover (1).  
22 Change oil filter cover. When replacing timing case cover (1).

23 Change heat exchanger. When replacing timing case cover (1). AR18.30-P-6841MRI
24 Install new cap (5) in the timing case (1). When replacing timing case cover (1).  
25 Install front radial shaft sealing ring. When reusing the timing case cover (1) or if no radial shaft sealing ring is installed in the new part. AR03.20-P-3002MRI
INSPECT Check     
26 Check sealing surfaces of the timing case cover (1) and crankcase for damage. If damage is present,

Replace corresponding component.

CLEAN Clean     
27 Clean sealing surfaces of timing case cover (1) and crankcase. NOTES
Do not use any sharp-edged tools or abrasive paper.
Sealing surfaces will otherwise be damaged.

    Loctite 7063 (400 ml) cleaning spray *BR00.45-Z-1046-04A 
    Loctite 7200 *BR00.45-Z-1038-04A 
28 Install in the reverse order.    
29 Check Engine oil level and correct if necessary.    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP18.00-P-1812MKI
WARNING Risk of burn injuries  , suffocation and poisoning when working on the exhaust system and the components connected to it. Risk of suffocation and risk of poisoning caused by inhalation of gaseous and solid components of the exhaust. Risk of poisoning  caused by skin contact with solid components of the exhaust. Wear protective clothing and safety glasses. Use the extraction system. Move people out of the danger zone. AS49.00-Z-0001-01A
WARNING Risk of accident  from vehicle starting off by itself when Engine running. Risk of injury  (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the Engine while it is being started or when it is running. Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts. AS00.00-Z-0005-01A
30 Perform Engine test run. While doing so, check Engine for proper operation and leak tightness.
