Remove/Install Engine With Front Axle Carrier - AR01.10-P-2500MRP

Wear protective clothing when handling fuel.

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Secure vehicle against rolling away, shift transmission to neutral position, and release parking brake.    
2 Move front wheels to straight-ahead position and fix steering wheel in place with holding device. SPECIAL TOOL Retainer device Fig 4
3 Secure vehicle on vehicle lift.   AR00.60-P-1006A
4 Reduce pressure of air suspension. Engine 264 in model 253

5 Relieve fuel pressure using diagnostic system.    
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS   IMPORTANT To do so, select following menu items: ME-SFI [ME] control unit →
Actuation →
Actuate the fuel pump.

6 Remove upper engine cover. INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Only install upper engine cover after the leak test. AR01.10-P-2405MRI 
7 Disconnect the ground line for the on-board electrical system battery (G1).   AR54.10-P-0003LW
8 Discharge air conditioning system.   AR83.30-P-1760LW
9 Drain coolant of the engine cooling circuit. INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Only install lower engine compartment paneling after leak test. AR20.00-P-1142MRI
10 Drain coolant of low-temperature circuit.   AR09.41-P-6834MRI
11 Remove engine air intake duct upstream of air filter housing.    
12 Remove front sections of front fender liners.   AR88.10-P-1300LW
13 Remove front bumper.   AR88.20-P-2000LW
14 Remove front cross struts. Engine 264 in model 253 (except 253.99)
with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Only install left and right longitudinal member panel after leak test.

15 Secure radiator package with suitable means against falling down.    
16 Remove bolts (1a) from bracket of low-temperature circuit circulation pump 1 (M43/6) and place low-temperature circuit circulation pump 1 (M43/6) with connected lines to one side. NOTES
Do not crush or kink or subject lines to tension.
This would lead to damage to the lines and can impair their function.
 
17 Remove front bolts from brackets (1b) to impact absorbers and/or to dampings and remove brackets (1b). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, strut to soundproofing *BA62.30-P-1004-01H 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, strut to cross member *BA62.30-P-1003-01H 
18 Remove bolts (2a) on left and right and open brackets.    
19 Remove bolts (2b) on left and right and remove impact absorbers and/or dampings. IMPORTANT Threaded unions (2c) are not connected to front-end assembly. These must be secured against falling down and the alignment must be observed.
IMPORTANT Correct location and/or protection of radiator package if necessary.
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, soundproofing to front axle carrier

20 Remove fuel feed line (3a) and seal openings with suitable stop plugs. INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace fuel feed line (3a).

25 Remove refrigerant line (4a) at bottom left at condenser, pull out of condenser and seal openings with suitable stop plugs.    
REFER TO CAPACITIES & SPECIFICATIONS Compressor oils (specification 362.1) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace sealing ring and moisten with compressor oil. BB00.40-P-0362-01A

26 Remove coolant lines (4b) at bottom. IMPORTANT Capture escaping coolant using suitable means. AR20.20-P-7441-01RQ
27 Remove coolant line (4c) at fitting to charge air cooler. IMPORTANT Capture escaping coolant using suitable means. AR20.20-P-7441-01RQ
28 Release and disconnect electrical connectors from steering gear.    
29 Remove wiring harness from front axle carrier and place to one side. SPECIAL TOOL Dismantling tool Fig 7
30 Expose electrical wiring harness from front right brakepad wear sensor (S10/2) up to connector coupling (1d) and remove.    
31 Release, disconnect electrical wiring harnesses from wheel carrier and/or suspension strut at connector couplings (1e) and remove cable duct (1f) from body. IMPORTANT The number of connector couplings (1e) varies depending on the vehicle equipment.  
32 Remove brake caliper with brakepads and/or front right brakepad wear sensor (S10/2) and secure with connected lines to vehicle so that free of tension.   AR42.10-P-0070LWA
33 Remove upper transverse control arms from steering knuckles. NOTES
Counterhold relevant ball head and do not use an impact wrench.
Ball head and/or steering knuckle will otherwise be damaged.
NOTES
Secure the steering knuckle again folding away.
Otherwise, damage to the joints will occur.

34 Detach suspension struts from spring links. Engine 264 in model 253

35 Remove refrigerant line (5a) at separating point in left front engine compartment, seal openings with suitable stop plugs and secure refrigerant line (5a) to engine so that free of tension.    
REFER TO CAPACITIES & SPECIFICATIONS Compressor oils (specification 362.1) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace sealing ring and moisten with compressor oil. BB00.40-P-0362-01A
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, refrigerant line to connecting point *BA83.30-P-1004-01Q

36 Remove coolant hose (5b) at firewall.   AR20.20-P-7441-01RQ
37 Remove vacuum line (5c).    
38 Remove coolant hoses (5d). IMPORTANT The number of coolant hoses (5d) varies depending on the vehicle equipment. AR20.20-P-7441-01RQ
39 Disconnect bleed line (5e) at separating point and at coolant expansion reservoir and remove.   AR20.20-P-7441-01RQ
40 Remove bleed line (5f) from engine.   AR20.20-P-7441-01RQ
41 Remove coolant hoses (5g). IMPORTANTCommercially available devices/tools

42 Remove bracket (5h), remove coolant line (5k) from charge air cooler and place to one side.   AR20.20-P-7441-01RQ
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw, coolant hose clamp to coolant thermostat *BA20.10-P-1005-01CA 
43 Remove, expose line (5m) of inerting system at fitting at bulkhead and attach to engine so that free of tension. Engine 264 in model 253
with code 2U8 (Alternative refrigerant)
with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)
NOTES
Do not crush or kink or subject lines to tension.
This would lead to damage to the lines and can impair their function.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace clamp of line (5m).
 
44 Disconnect engine wiring harness for removal of engine.   AR15.18-P-1000-05MRI
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, positive line to busbar on firewall *BA54.18-P-1001-02C 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, heat shield to oil pan *BA27.10-P-1009-04H 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, ground line to pin/underfloor *BA00.19-P-1043-01E 
45 Support front axle carrier, secure engine transmission unit with suitable means against slipping and falling down.    
REFER TO SPECIAL TOOLS 000 588 03 62 00 Lifting platform   WS01.00-P-0091A
46 Remove rear engine carrier. IMPORTANT The rear engine crossmember remains on transmission. AR22.10-P-1160LWB
47 Remove struts of front axle carrier at longitudinal members. TORQUE SPECIFICATION Mount, support (strut) *BA33.10-P-1002-01Q 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, front axle carrier to longitudinal member *BA33.10-P-1001-01Q 
48 Lower engine with front axle carrier.    
REFER TO SPECIAL TOOLS 000 588 03 62 00 Lifting platform NOTES
Ensure that engine and its detachable parts are not in contact with body panels or major assemblies.
This will result in damage to the component parts.
NOTES
Do not crush or kink or subject lines to tension.
This would lead to damage to the lines and can impair their function.
IMPORTANT Aid of helper required.

49 Install in the reverse order.    
  Concluding tasks     
50 Check engine oil level and correct if necessary.

51 Connect vehicle diagnosis system, read out fault memory and clear if necessary.

WARNING Risk of accident  from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury  (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts. AS00.00-Z-0005-01A
52 Perform engine test run. While doing so, check engine for proper operation and leak tightness.    
53 Perform wheel alignment measurement.   AR40.20-P-0200LW
