Replace timing chain - AR05.10-P-7601GZ (ML500): Notes

REMOVING Removing    
DANGER Risk of explosion  caused by oxyhydrogen gas. Risk of poisoning and caustic burns  caused by swallowing battery acid. Risk of injury  caused by burns to skin and eyes from battery acid or when handling damaged lead-acid batteries No fire, sparks, open flames or smoking.
Wear acid-resistant gloves, clothing and safety glasses. Only pour battery acid into suitable and appropriately marked containers.

1 Disconnect ground cable from battery NOTES Insulate clamping device of the ground line in order to prevent inadvertent contact with the ground point of the battery. AR54.10-P-0003GZ

DANGER Risk of injury  caused by fingers being jammed or pinched  when removing, installing or aligning hoods, doors, trunk lid/rear-end door or sliding roof. When moving components, ensure that no body parts or limbs are within the operating range of moving parts. AS00.00-Z-0011-01A
2 Open engine hood and raise to vertical position   AR88.40-P-1000GZ
3 Remove one spark plug from each cylinder IMPORTANT To ensure that the engine can be easily cranked when drawing in the timing chain and to avoid the timing chain skipping, see. ↓  
REFER TO MAINTENANCE   Replace spark plugs AP15.10-P-1580GZ
4 Remove cylinder head covers   AR01.20-P-5014GZ
5 Check the engine valve timing If necessary: ↓ AR05.10-P-6858GZ 
    Set basic position of camshafts AR05.20-P-6020GZ 
6 Remove chain tensioner   AR05.10-P-7800GZ 
7 Remove camshaft Hall sensor   AR15.10-P-2000GZ
8 Crank engine in direction of rotation until the link for separating the timing chain is easily accessible IMPORTANT The timing chain is separated one chain link next to the copper plate (on right). See new timing chain.  
9 Remove right camshaft bearing bridge   AR05.20-P-7103GZ 
10 Install holding bush (3) onto right camshaft IMPORTANT Only fit Torx bolts (4).

11 Mount retainer for timing chain (on the right)
  1. and retainer for timing chain (on the left)
  2. for timing chain on the right and left cylinder head

12 Separate timing chain NOTES Cover over timing case recess with a clean cloth. Parts which have fallen into the timing case recess, must be removed.
IMPORTANT Connect the old chain to the new timing chain while pulling out the old timing chain.

INSTALLING Installing     
13 Draw in new timing chain IMPORTANT Always remove the assembly link after drawing in the new timing chain. These are only an assembly aid and not intended for engine running.
IMPORTANT Pull in the new timing chain by turning the crankshaft in its standard direction of rotation.

14 Remove retainer for timing chain (on the right) (1) and retainer for timing chain (on the left) (2) for timing chain on the right and left cylinder head    
15 Rivet new timing chain   AR05.10-P-7601-02AV

16 Crank engine in direction of rotation    
17 Check the engine valve timing   AR05.10-P-6858GZ 
18 Remove holding bush (3) from right camshaft    
19 Fit right camshaft bearing bridge   AR05.20-P-7103GZ 
20 Install camshaft Hall sensor   AR15.10-P-2000GZ
21 Installing chain tensioner   AR05.10-P-7800GZ 
22 Install cylinder head covers   AR01.20-P-5014GZ
23 Install spark plugs    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE Replace spark plugs   AP15.10-P-1580GZ
24 Connect ground cable to battery   AR54.10-P-0003GZ
DANGER Risk of accident  caused by vehicle starting off by itself when engine is running. Risk of injury caused by contusions and burns during starting procedure or when working near the running engine Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving by itself.
Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes.
Do not grasp hot or rotating parts.

25 Conduct engine test run and check the engine for leaks while it is running NOTES In the event of oil loss determine and eliminate cause, otherwise malfunctions, transmission damage, and serious environmental pollution may occur.
