Setting basic position of camshafts - AR05.20-P-6020GZ (ML500)

REMOVING Removing    
1 Remove cylinder head covers   AR01.20-P-5014GZ
2 Check basic position of camshafts If basic position of the camshafts is incorrect: ↓
Turn engine to a 40° crank angle after ignition TDC at cylinder 1.
NOTES The engine must not be turned backwards; otherwise the timing chain can get jammed.

3 Remove chain tensioner   AR05.10-P-7800GZ 
4 Remove camshaft Hall sensor   AR15.10-P-2000GZ
5 Remove right-hand camshaft sprocket IMPORTANT Lift timing chain from camshaft sprocket.

6 Remove left camshaft sprocket IMPORTANT Lift timing chain from camshaft sprocket.

INSTALLING Install     
7 Rotate left camshaft to its basic position and fit locating plate to the camshaft IMPORTANT Groove of camshaft (6) must point to the center of the cylinder head cover separating surface in direction of inner V.
IMPORTANT Place locating plate (2) flush onto left cylinder head and insert into the slot of the camshaft (6).
IMPORTANT At a 40° crank angle after ignition TDC of cylinder 1, it is possible to rotate the camshaft without the valves coming into contact with the pistons.

8 Rotate right camshaft to basic position and insert locating plate (2) for right camshaft into camshaft IMPORTANT Groove of camshaft (6) must point to the center of the cylinder head cover separating surface in direction of inner V.
IMPORTANT Place locating plate (2) for the right camshaft flush on the right cylinder head and insert it into the keyway (6) of the camshaft.
IMPORTANT At a 40° crank angle after ignition TDC of cylinder 1, it is possible to rotate the camshaft without the valves coming into contact with the pistons.

9 Install left camshaft sprocket IMPORTANT Place timing chain onto camshaft sprocket.  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA05.20-P-1001-01B 
    SPECIAL TOOL Insertion tool Fig 5
10 Install right camshaft sprocket IMPORTANT Place timing chain onto camshaft sprocket.  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA05.20-P-1001-01B

11 Install camshaft Hall sensor   AR15.10-P-2000GZ
12 Install chain tensioner   AR05.10-P-7800GZ 
INSPECT Checking     
13 Inspect timing NOTES The engine must not be turned backwards; otherwise the timing chain can get jammed. AR05.10-P-6858GZ 
IMPORTANT General notes on timing, markings   AH05.10-P-1000-01A 
14 Install cylinder head covers   AR01.20-P-5014GZ
