MODIFICATION NOTES

18.10.05 Remove, install engine with front axle carrier, added Steps 4, 58  
  Remove/install automatic transmission - added Steps 5, 57  
  Remove, install engine with front axle carrier, added Steps 6, 56  
REMOVING Removing    
DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off the lifting platform. Align vehicle between columns of vehicle lift and position four support plates at vehicle lift support points specified by vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
1 Drain off engine oil and screw in oil drain screw again IMPORTANT Replace sealing ring.  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA01.45-P-1001-01M 
2 Remove engine with front axle carrier   AR01.10-P-2500GZA
3 Remove automatic transmission Model 164 AR27.10-P-0500GZA
    Model 251 AR27.10-P-0500RTA
4 Detach engine from front axle carrier   AR01.10-P-2510GZA
5 Mount engine onto assembly stand    
6 Remove flywheel/drive plate   AR03.30-P-8001GZA 
7 Remove rear crankshaft radial sealing ring   AR03.20-P-3063GZA 
8 Remove oil pan   AR01.45-P-7500GZA
9 Remove oil pump   AR18.10-P-6020GZA
10 Remove oil pump chain (11)    
11 Remove oil baffle from crankcase    
12 Remove resonance intake manifold   AR09.20-P-1961GZA
13 Remove cylinder head covers (12) Left cylinder head cover AR01.20-P-5013GZA
    Right cylinder head cover AR01.20-P-5012GZA
14 Turn engine at crankshaft (7) in the direction of engine rotation to a 40° crank angle after ignition TDC and check position of camshafts   AR05.20-P-6010-01VB
15 Remove alternator Model 164 AR15.40-P-5032GZA
    Model 251 AR15.40-P-5032RTA
16 Remove chain tensioner Chain tensioner with thread M24X1.5 (only for engine 272) AR05.10-P-7800GZA
    Chain tensioner using thread M22X1.5
IMPORTANT In case of engine 272 both chain tensioners can be removed whereby for engine 273 only chain tensioner with thread M22X1.5 is installed.

17 Remove timing case cover IMPORTANT Do not damage cylinder head gaskets. AR01.40-P-8000GZA
18 Remove camshaft adjuster (13) at right cylinder head Exhaust camshaft adjuster AR05.20-P-7201GZA
    Intake camshaft adjuster AR05.20-P-7201GZC
19 Detach timing chain drive gear (14) from crankshaft (7) IMPORTANT Secure feather key (15).  
20 Mark connecting rod and connecting rod bearing cap (2) on one side relative to each other (arrow). IMPORTANT Connecting rods have been cracked during manufacture (broken). The connecting rod bearing caps (2) are not interchangeable and must not be installed in the wrong direction.  
21 Remove connecting rod bearing cap (2) IMPORTANT Mark connecting rod bearing cap (2) and lower connecting rod bearing shells (3) relative to each other. Mark connecting rod bearing cap (1) and upper connecting rod bearing shells (4) relative to each other.
While rotating crankshaft (7) ensure that connecting rods (1) do not get jammed.
 
22 Loosen crankshaft bearing cap (5) bolts and crankshaft fitted bearing cap (6) in reverse order of tightening procedure Bolt tightening procedure for crankshaft bearing cap(s):  
    Engine 272 AR03.20-P-4351-02VA 
    Engine 273 AR03.20-P-4351-02SX 
    Bolt for crankshaft bearing cap *BA03.20-P-1001-01D 
    Side bolt for crankshaft bearing cap *BA03.20-P-1002-01D 
    Bolt for crankshaft bearing cap *BA03.20-P-1003-01D 
23 Remove crankshaft bearing cap (5) and crankshaft fitted bearing cap (6) IMPORTANT Carefully pry-off crankshaft bearing cap (5) and crankshaft fitted bearing cap (6). Mark crankshaft bearing shells (10) relative to respective crankshaft bearing caps (5) and to crankshaft fitted bearing cap (6).  
24 Take crankshaft (7) out of crankcase    
25 Remove upper crankshaft bearing shells (8) and upper thrust washers (9) from crankcase IMPORTANT Assign upper crankshaft bearing shells (8) to respective crankshaft bearing. Mark thrust plates (9) relative to crankshaft fitted bearing.  
INSTALLING Install     
26 Lubricate upper crankshaft bearing shells (8) and insert into crankcase IMPORTANT When replacing upper crankshaft bearing shells (8), lower crankshaft bearing shells (10) or crankshaft (7):↓
Assign crankshaft bearing shells:
 
    Engine 272 AR03.20-P-4360-01VA 
    Engine 273 AR03.20-P-4360-01SX 
*BE03.20-P-1001-04E 
27 Insert crankshaft (7) into crankcase IMPORTANT Lubricate crankshaft journals.  
28 Lubricate thrust plates (9) without retaining lugs and in insert into crankshaft fitted bearing in crankcase crankshaft IMPORTANT The oil grooves in thrust washers (9) must point toward thrust collars of the (7).  
29 Lubricate lower crankshaft bearing shells (10) and lower thrust plates (9) with retaining lugs and insert into crankshaft bearing cap (5) and crankshaft fitted bearing cap (6) IMPORTANT When replacing upper crankshaft bearing shells (8), lower crankshaft bearing shells (10) or crankshaft (7):↓
Assign crankshaft bearing shells:
 
    Engine 272 AR03.20-P-4360-01VA 
    Engine 273 AR03.20-P-4360-01SX 
*BE03.20-P-1001-04E 
30 Insert crankshaft bearing cap (5) and crankshaft fitted bearing cap (6) IMPORTANT The crankshaft bearing cap (5) and crankshaft fitted bearing cap (6) are numbered consecutively.
Fit of crankshaft bearing cap:
 
IMPORTANT   Engine 272 AH03.20-P-4351-02VA 
IMPORTANT   Engine 273 AH03.20-P-4351-02SX 
31 Apply bolts for crankshaft bearing cap (5) and crankshaft fitted bearing cap (6) NOTES Bolts must be replaced, otherwise there is risk of cracks and fracture. In doing so tighten all bolts according to the tightening procedure:↓

32 Rotate crankshaft (7) and check for unobstructed movement    
33 Determine crankshaft bearing axial play Engine 272 AR03.20-P-4291-03VA 
    Engine 273 AR03.20-P-4291-03SX 
    Crankshaft bearing clearance *BE03.20-P-1001-04E 
34 Inspect Connecting rod bolts   AR03.10-P-6111-01VA 
    Connecting rod bolts *BE03.10-P-1001-03A 
35 Mount connecting rod bearing and check connecting rod bearing play Engine 272 AR03.10-P-6111-06VA

    Crankshaft bearing clearance *BE03.20-P-1002-04E 
36 Tighten connecting rod screws   AR03.10-P-6111-02VA 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA03.10-P-1001-01E 
37 Rotate crankshaft (7) and check for unobstructed movement    
38 Push timing chain drive gear (14) onto crankshaft (7) IMPORTANT Observe feather key (15).  
39.1 Install camshaft adjuster (13) for right cylinder bank in doing so adjusting basic positions of camshafts and balance shaft (16) Engine 272
IMPORTANT Check timing of engine and basic position of balance shaft (16) at a 40° crank angle before ignition TDC. At a 40° crank angle before ignition TDC the feather key (15) is in line with marking (17) on crankcase and notch (18) on balance shaft (16) is line with marking (19).
 
    Exhaust camshaft adjuster AR05.20-P-7201GZA
    Intake camshaft adjuster AR05.20-P-7201GZC
39.2 Install camshaft adjuster (13) for right cylinder head while adjusting basic positions of camshafts Engine 273
IMPORTANT Check engine timings at a 40° crank angle before ignition TDC. At a 40° crank angle before ignition TDC the feather key (15) is in line with marking (17) on crankcase.

IMPORTANT In case of engine 272 both chain tensioners can be removed whereby for engine 273 only chain tensioner with thread M22X1.5 is installed.

52 Remove engine from assembly stand    
53 Attach engine to front axle carrier   AR01.10-P-2510GZA
