Replacing both left VANOS central valves

Collect and dispose of emerging fluids. Observe country-specific waste disposal regulations.
Grease the threads of new oxygen sensors thinly and evenly.
For oxygen sensors that are reused, the following should be observed:
Thinly and evenly grease the oxygen sensor on the thread only. Do not clean the part of the oxygen sensor that does not protrude into the exhaust line (sensor ceramics) and do not grease.

Remove the sealing cap on the cylinder head of the cylinder bank 2
- Loosen screws (1).
- Remove the sealing cap (2) on the cylinder head.
Moving the crankshaft to the installation position to adjust the timings
- Turn the engine at the central bolt in clockwise direction until the installation position (MP) (1) of the vibration absorber is positioned flush with the marks of the engine block.
Check the VANOS adjuster of cylinder bank 2
Check
- Check the lock of intake and exhaust camshaft adjusters.
- Position open-end spanner (1) on the hexagon head of the camshaft (2).
- Move open-end spanner slightly back and forward in direction of arrow.
- The camshafts must have a frictional connection to the VANOS adjusters (2).
Result
» Camshafts are connected to the VANOS adjusters (2) with frictional connections.
Measure
- Continue the repair with the next step.
Result
» If no frictional connection exists, replace the affected VANOS adjuster.

- Replace the affected VANOS adjuster.

Relaxing chain tensioner on bank 2 for checking or setting timing
Damage to timing chain or timing chain drive.
Turning the engine without chain tensioner or special tool can result in damage to the timing chain and timing chain drive.
- Always turn the engine with the chain tensioner or the special tool.
- Make sure that the chain drive is loaded at the same time on the central bolt of the engine and on the VANOS exhaust central valve.
The movement of the chain tensioner piston must be observed in this process.
To do this, carry out the following steps at the same time:
- Keep the VANOS central valve on the exhaust side under tension in clockwise direction with a support person.
The VANOS central valve on the exhaust side must not be twisted.
- Rotate the engine counterclockwise at the central bolt.
Slackening the hydraulic chain tensioner of cylinder bank 2
Damage to timing chain or timing chain drive.
Turning the engine without chain tensioner or special tool can result in damage to the timing chain and timing chain drive.
- Always turn the engine with the chain tensioner or the special tool.
- Position the special tool 0 491 012 (11 4 120) (3) in the bore and fasten the chain tensioner piston.
- Make sure that the chain drive is relieved at the same time on the central bolt of the engine and on the VANOS central valve on the exhaust side.
To do this, carry out the following steps at the same time:
- Relieve the chain drive clockwise at the central bolt.
- Relieve the chain drive counterclockwise at the VANOS central valve on the exhaust side.
Removing hydraulic chain tensioner of cylinder bank 2
Damage to timing chain or timing chain drive.
Turning the engine without chain tensioner or special tool can result in damage to the timing chain and timing chain drive.
- Always turn the engine with the chain tensioner or the special tool.
- Loosen screws (1).
- Feed out and remove hydraulic chain tensioner (2).
Preloading the timing chain of cylinder bank 2
Damage to timing chain or timing chain drive.
Turning the engine without chain tensioner or special tool can result in damage to the timing chain and timing chain drive.
- Always turn the engine with the chain tensioner or the special tool.
- Position the special tool 2 249 162 on the cylinder head and apply the screws (1) hand-tight.
- Exchange the screw (2) on the special tool 2 249 162
with an (M8x15) hexagon screw.
- Pretension special tool 2 249 162
using special tool 0 496 778 (00 9 460)
at 0.6 Nm.
The flexible shaft on the special tool 0 496 778 (00 9 460) must not touch any other components, as the torque value will be falsified.

Fixing the engine in the installation position on cylinder 1 (set valve timings)
- Position special tool 0 496 366 (11 8 570) (3) on the vibration absorber.
- Position special tool 0 493 882 (11 9 190)
(1) in special tool 0 496 366 (11 8 570)

The special tool 0 493 882 (11 9 190) (1) must not be inserted very far as it may collide with other components while turning the crankshaft.
- Position reversible ratchet.
- Rotate engine on the central bolt until the special tool lines up with the engine block marks.
- Hand-tighten the special tool 0 496 366 (11 8 570) (3) with a screw (2) of the belt pulley on the
vibration absorber.
- Slide the crankshaft in the installation position with the special tool 0 493 882 (11 9 190) (1) at the marks and fix it.
- Position special tool 2 249 137 (1) on the camshafts of cylinder bank 1.
- Secure the camshafts using special tool 2 249 137 (1).
- Bring the special tool 2 249 137
(1) with two screws (2) of the cylinder head cover by hand-tightening in contact with the cylinder head.
- Release VANOS central valve (1).
- Make sure that the exhaust camshaft adjuster and the intake adjuster must not be removed from the camshafts.
- Remove the VANOS central valves (1).
- Replacement: Replace the VANOS central valves (1).
Parts: VANOS central valves
- Position VANOS central valves (1).
- Tighten VANOS central valves (1) hand-tight.
- Make straights marks on the VANOS central valves (1) and on the VANOS adjusters (2) in the area of the hexagon head.
The angle must be 60°.
- Release the VANOS central valves (1) in the area of the hexagon head counterclockwise in arrow direction until the upper mark of the VANOS central valve matches with the lower mark.
The rotational angle is 60°.
- Turn the engine counter-clockwise by 90° at central bolt.
- Make sure that the special tools 0 493 882 (11 9 190) (1) and 0 496 366 (11 8 570) (2) do not collide with the other components.
- Remove the special tool 0 496 366 (11 8 570)
(2).
- Position the special tool 0 493 882 (11 9 190) (1) in the recess on the engine block.
- Turn the engine on the central bolt clockwise until the special tool 0 493 882 (11 9 190) (1) lies against special tool 0 496 366 (11 8 570) (2).
- Hand-tighten the special tool 0 496 366 (11 8 570) (2) with a screw (3) of the belt pulley on the vibration absorber.
- Remove the special tool 0 493 882 (11 9 190) (1).
Checking the preload of the timing chain for cylinder bank 2
- Check the preload on the special tool 2 249 162
with the special tool 0 496 778 (00 9 460)
with 0.6 Nm.
The flexible shaft on the special tool 0 496 778 (00 9 460) must not touch any other components, as the torque value will be falsified.

- Slide the crankshaft in the installation position with the special tool 0 493 882 (11 9 190)
(1) on the bars and fix it.
- Tighten VANOS central valves (1).

to zero (arrow).
- Tighten the VANOS central valve of the intake side until the needle on the special tool 0 490 504 (00 9 120) is at 30° (arrow).

- Tighten the VANOS central valve of the intake side until the needle on the special tool 0 490 504 (00 9 120) is at 30° (arrow).

The cams (1) must be in the position shown.
The increment wheels (2) must form a line to the exhaust camshaft bearing cap and to the intake camshaft bearing cap.
- Make sure that the ground surfaces (2) of the camshafts point up.
- Make sure that the rounded surfaces (1) point downwards to the cylinder head.
- Check and evaluate the timing once again.
Fixing the engine in the installation position on cylinder 1 (set valve timings)
- Position special tool 0 496 366 (11 8 570) (3) on the vibration absorber.
- Position special tool 0 493 882 (11 9 190)
(1) in special tool 0 496 366 (11 8 570)

- Position reversible ratchet.

- Check if the camshafts can be fastened with the special tool 2 249 117 (1).
- Check if the special tool 2 249 117 can be brought in contact with the cylinder head using the two screws of the cylinder head cover (2).

- Make sure that the increment wheels (2) align with the exhaust camshaft bearing cap and the intake camshaft bearing cap.
The ground surfaces of the camshafts should be facing upward.
- Make sure that the ground surfaces (2) of the camshafts point up.
- Make sure that the rounded surfaces (1) point downwards to the cylinder head.
- Check and evaluate the timing once again.
Remove the special tools to disconnect the crankshaft
- Remove special tool 0 493 882 (11 9 190) (1).
- Release the screw (2) of the belt pulley.
- Remove special tool 0 496 366 (11 8 570) (3).
Removing special tool for fixing camshafts in position on bank 2
- Loosen screws (2).
- Remove the special tool 2 249 117 (1).
- Turn the engine clockwise on the central bolt by 2 crankshaft revolutions until the installation position (MP) (1) of the vibration absorber aligns with the struts of the engine block.

- Check whether the special tool 2 249 117 (1) can be brought into contact with the cylinder head using 2 screws (2) of the cylinder head cover.
