Installing front passenger airbag
Danger! Immobilization period-threatening injuries!
- All work on pyrotechnic parts may be carried out by technically experienced and appropriately trained personnel only.
- Replace any damaged part or ones that have been dropped.
- For additional information see: SAFETY REGULATIONS FOR HANDLING COMPONENTS WITH GAS GENERATORS .
Danger! Immobilization period-threatening injuries!
- Before performing any work on the airbag, always disconnect the battery ground lead from the battery.
- Airbag unit may only be set down with the cushion (airbag itself) facing upwards.
- For additional information see: SAFETY REGULATIONS FOR HANDLING COMPONENTS WITH GAS GENERATORS .
- Case 1: Installation of the removed front passenger airbag on a new instrument panel
- Position front passenger airbag (2) .
- Secure the front passenger airbag (2) with 12 screws.
- Tighten the screws (1)
.
Further retorquing of the screws with the torque wrench is not permitted!
TIGHTENING TORQUE SPECIFICATIONSFront passenger airbag to instrument panel Oval-head screw Tightening torque 2.3 Nm - The tightening torque must be applied on at least 11 screws.
- The one screw on which the tightening torque cannot be achieved must be removed .
- If the tightening torque is not reached in more than 1 screw, the instrument panel must be replaced.
- Case 2: Installation of a new front passenger airbag on the removed instrument panel
Removed front passenger airbag was 6 secured with screws .
- Position front passenger airbag (2) .
- Secure the front passenger airbag (2) with 12 screws.
- Tighten the screws (1)
.
Further retorquing of the screws with the torque wrench is not permitted!

- Case 3: Installation of a new front passenger airbag on the removed instrument panel
Removed front passenger airbag was 11 secured with screws .
- Position front passenger airbag (2)
.NOTE: TECHNICAL INFORMATION
The marked screw point 3 serves as an example for the unused screw point. - Do not use the bolting point (3) marked in "Removing the front passenger airbag".
- Fasten front passenger airbag (2) using 11 screws to the same, already used bolting points .
- Tighten the screws (1)
.
Further retorquing of the screws with the torque wrench is not permitted!
TIGHTENING TORQUE SPECIFICATIONSFront passenger airbag to instrument panel Oval-head screw Tightening torque 2.3 Nm - The tightening torque must be applied on all 11 screws.
- If the tightening torque is not reached in 1
screw, the instrument panel must be replaced.
Check
NOTE: TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Although the screws were correctly tightened using the torque wrench, it is possible that the screw head is not seated without a gap. The following procedure is applicable to all present cases . - Check whether all the screw heads (1)
rest without gaps as shown (for example, with a thin paper strip (2)
).
Result
» A: Paper strip (2) fits below the screw head (1) . Screw (1) does not rest without any gaps. Screw connection is not correct.
Measure
- Release the screw (1) and tighten it once again to the same, specified tightening torque without retorquing .
Increasing the tightening torque in order to seat the screw head in the correct position is not permitted!
Repeating a bolting operation is permitted only once for each bolting point .
Result
» B: Paper strip (2) does not fit below the screw head (1) . Screw (1) is positioned without any gaps. Screw connection is correct.
Measure
- No action required.
Result
» C: Despite the screw connection having been repeated once, paper strip (2) fits under screw head (1) . Despite the screw connection having been repeated once, screw (1) does not rest without a gap. Screw connection is not correct.
Measure
- Replace dashboard.
