Remove/Install refrigerant compressor - AR83.55-P-5310EWA

DANGER Risk of explosion  caused by welding or soldering work on closed air conditioning system. Risk of poisoning  caused by inhaling overheated refrigerant vapors. Risk of injury  to skin and eyes caused by contact with liquid refrigerant. Do not perform welding work on or near a closed air conditioning system. No smoking or open flames. Wear safety glasses and protective gloves. Work only in well ventilated areas. Carry out repair work on the air conditioning system circuit only after the system has been drained. AS83.00-Z-0001-01A

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Drain air conditioning system   AR83.30-P-1760CW 
2 Remove fan unit   AR20.40-P-5050EL
3 Mount guard plate on radiator    
REFER TO SHOP-MADE TOOLS Protective plate for cooling module   WF58.50-P-0110-04A
4 Mount engine hoist   AR33.10-P-0105EW
5 Remove center lower engine compartment paneling   AR61.20-P-1105EW
6 Remove screws/bolts of front engine mount at front axle carrier TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, front engine mount to front axle carrier *BA22.10-P-1002-03E 
7 Lift engine NOTES
Make sure that the engine does not make contact with the partition wall.
Otherwise, electrical lines or coolant hoses may become damaged.
 
8 Remove air duct (20) ENGINE 278 in MODEL 212, 218 with CODE M005 (4MATIC)  
9 Remove screw/bolt (30) and detach oil line (31) from oil pan    
10 Slacken poly-V-belt and remove from belt pulley of the refrigerant compressor (A9)   AR13.20-P-0001ELB
11 Lower rack-and-pinion steering until screw/bolt (8) is accessible ENGINE 157 in MODEL 212 with CODE 211 (Direct-Steer system) with CODE M005 (4MATIC)

ENGINE 278 in MODEL 212 with CODE 211 (Direct-Steer system) with CODE M005 (4MATIC)

REFER TO SPECIAL TOOLS 000 588 11 62 00 Assembly mounting   WS01.00-P-0092B
REFER TO SPECIAL TOOLS 000 588 10 62 00 Mounting plate   WS26.00-P-3309B
    IMPORTANT Tie rods remain attached to the steering knuckles.  
12 Unscrew nut (10)    
13 Remove high-pressure line (11) from A/C compressor (A9), place upwards into engine compartment and seal openings with stop plugs    
REFER TO CAPACITIES & SPECIFICATIONS Compressor oils (specification 362.0)   MB 362.0 compressor oil A 001 989 08 03
    IMPORTANT Installation: Replace sealing ring at high pressure line (11).
Moisten sealing ring with compressor oil.
 
    SPECIAL TOOL Record plug Fig 4
14 Disconnect electrical connector (9) at refrigerant compressor (A9)    
15 Unscrew bolt (42) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, refrigerant line to refrigerant compressor *BA83.55-P-1003-01M 
16 Remove low-pressure line (4) from A/C compressor (A9) and seal openings with stop plugs    
REFER TO CAPACITIES & SPECIFICATIONS Compressor oils (specification 362.0)   MB 362.0 compressor oil A 001 989 08 03
    IMPORTANT Installation: Replace sealing ring at low-pressure line (4).
Moisten sealing ring with compressor oil.
 
    SPECIAL TOOL Record plug Fig 4
17 Remove screws/bolts (6, 7, 8) and safeguard refrigerant compressor (A9) to prevent it from falling down IMPORTANT Observe installation location of screws/bolts (6, 7, 8).  
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, refrigerant compressor to timing case/crankcase/engine support *BA83.55-P-1001-01M 
18 Cover front axle carrier with rags    
19 Set refrigerant compressor (A9) into upright position (picture A), route over the oil lines (31, 32) (picture B) and remove downwards (arrows)    
20 Install in the reverse order    
21 Connect diagnostic system and perform break-in of refrigerant compressor (A9) When installing new refrigerant compressor (A9).
