Remove/install steering knuckle - AR33.25-P-0400EWX

Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Detach front complete wheel    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP40.10-P-4050EW
2 Remove screw/bolt (1) from front axle shaft (2)
Notes on threaded connections fastened using a tightening angle-based tightening process

TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, front axle shaft to wheel hub *BA33.30-P-1001-02H 
3 Remove brake caliper and fasten with connected lines to suspension strut (8) Model 212.074/075/076/077/274/275/276/277 with code B07 (Ceramic brake system) with code M005 (4MATIC)

The brake hose must not be pulled or kinked.

4 Remove left front axle rpm sensor (L6/1) or right front axle rpm sensor (L6/2) from steering knuckle (4) and unclip electric line from holder   AR42.30-P-0712EW
5 Remove strut (11) Model 212, 218 as of model year 2015 with code 460 (Canada version) with code M005 (4MATIC)

6 Detach tie rod (5) from steering knuckle (4) MODEL 212, 218 with CODE M005 (4MATIC) AR46.40-P-0200-02CW

NOTES
Turn in steering onto lock and check for correct seating of SPECIAL TOOL puller on the tie rod (5). Otherwise, the steel bearing race of the tie rod (5) will be damaged and this will then destroy the tie rod (5).
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Self-locking nut, tie rod to steering knuckle *BA46.40-P-1001-01N

7 Remove bracket (14) Model 212.0 as of model year 2015 with code 460 (Canada version) with code M005 (4MATIC)
Model 212.0 as of model year 2015 with code 494 (US version) with code M005 (4MATIC)
Installation: Tighten nut for bracket (14) only after installation of the strut (11).
 
8 Remove cross strut (6) from steering knuckle (4) AR33.15-P-0161EW 
9 Detach strut rod (7) from steering knuckle (4)   AR33.15-P-0160EWX 
10 Tilt steering knuckle (4) to one side, while doing so, pull front axle shaft (2) out of wheel hub NOTES
Carefully tilt steering knuckle (4).
The seal bellows of the front axle shaft (2) will otherwise be damaged.
 
11 Remove suspension strut (8) from steering knuckle (4) and take out steering knuckle (4) MODEL 212, 218
with CODE M005 (4MATIC)
without CODE 489 (AIRMATIC)

12 Remove brake caliper support (3), brake disk (9) and brake cover plate (10) from steering knuckle (4) When replacing steering knuckle (4)

13 Check seal bellows and ball joint of tie rod (5) for wear and damage If damage is present

Replace tie rod (5).

14 Check seal bellows and ball joint of strut rod (7) for wear and damage If damage is present

Replace strut rod (7).

15 Check seal bellows and ball joint of cross strut (6) for damage If damage is present

Replace cross strut (6).

16 Check front axle shaft (2) for damage If damage is present

Replace front axle shaft (2).

17 Install in the reverse order    
18 Perform wheel alignment check AR40.20-P-0200EW
