Pressing out and attaching track rod joint at steering knuckle - AR46.40-P-0200-02CW

IMPORTANT MODEL 117, 156, 176, 242, 246

SPECIAL TOOL Use puller (221 589 05 33 00) (01) and SPECIAL TOOL press (163 589 03 43 00) (03) for prying off the tie rod joint (5).

IMPORTANT MODEL 172, 204, 212, 218

SPECIAL TOOL Use puller (221 589 00 33 00) (01), SPECIAL TOOL thrust piece (171 589 00 34 00) (02) and SPECIAL TOOL press (163 589 03 43 00) (03) for prying off the tie rod joint (5) without stainless-steel ring. To check the variant: Clean the rubber boot and contact surface on the steering knuckle (7) if necessary.

IMPORTANT MODEL 204, 207, 212

SPECIAL TOOL Use puller (221 589 05 33 00) (01), SPECIAL TOOL thrust piece (171 589 00 34 00) (02) and SPECIAL TOOL press (163 589 03 43 00) (03) for prying off the tie rod joint (5) with stainless-steel ring.

Pushing off 

  1. Unscrew self-locking nut from tie rod joint (5).
    • 2.1)  MODEL 172, 204, 207, 212, 218

      Fit puller (01) with thrust piece (02) and press (03) on tie rod joint (5) and steering knuckle (7).

    • 2.2)  MODEL 117, 156, 176, 242, 246

      Mount puller (01) and press (03) to tie rod ball joint (5) and steering knuckle (7).

      IMPORTANT Do not use a thrust piece (02).

  2. Pry off tie rod joint (5) off steering knuckle (7) using puller (01), if necessary, thrust piece (02) and press (03).

    NOTES Turn steering and check for correct seating of puller (01) on tie rod ball joint (5) and, where applicable, on the thrust piece (02). If seating is incorrect, damage to the race of the tie rod occurs and this results in destruction of the tie rod.

  3. Remove puller (01), where applicable the thrust piece (02) and press (03) from tie rod joint (5).
  4. Mount 

  5. Clean cone and thread on tie rod joint (5) and mount on steering knuckle (7).

    NOTES There must not be any grease or oil on the taper, thread and the support. Otherwise the tie rod ball joint (5) may become detached.

  6. Attach self-locking nut to tie rod joint (5). MODEL 117, 156, 176, 242, 246

    TORQUE SPECIFICATION MODEL 204, 207, 212, 218

    TORQUE SPECIFICATION MODEL 172 TORQUE SPECIFICATION

    IMPORTANT If necessary, counterhold the tie rod joint (5) using a suitable tool. Observe specified tightening torque.
