Remove/install torque strut at front axle - AR33.15-P-0160EWX

DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Detach front wheel and tire assembly    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP40.10-P-4050EW
2.1 Remove center and rear engine compartment paneling MODEL 212, 218 with gasoline engines  
      AR61.20-P-1105EW
2.2 Remove center and rear bottom part of noise encapsulation MODEL 212, 218 with diesel engine  
      AR94.30-P-5300EW
3 Unscrew nut (7) TORQUE SPECIFICATION MODEL 212 *BA33.20-P-1004-01O 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION MODEL 218 *BA33.20-P-1004-01Q 
4 Detach strut rod (5) with thrust piece (01), puller (02) and press (03) from steering knuckle (6) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT The grease in the radial groove must not be removed.
IMPORTANT There must not be any grease on the taper and thread.

5 Unscrew nut (2) and pull screw/bolt (3) out of front axle carrier (4) NOTES
When loosening the nut (2) the screw/bolt (3) must not be twisted. It is essential to counterhold screw/bolt (3).
Otherwise the locating lugs for the caster adjustment in the elastomer bearing (5a) will be sheared off when the repair kit is fitted.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Screw nut (2) of screw/bolt (3) all the way on until it abuts, but do not tighten yet so that the elastomer bearing (5a) can twist when the vehicle is rocked to settle the suspension. Only tighten nut (2) in the ready-to-drive condition.

6 Remove strut rod (5) from front axle carrier (4)    
7 Remove strut rod (5) from steering knuckle (6) IMPORTANT Turn steering onto lock:
  • Left side: Turn steering onto left lock.
  • Right side: Turn steering onto right lock.
 
INSPECT Check     
8 Check elastomer bearing (5a) of strut rod (5) for damage IMPORTANT Replace the elastomer bearing (5a) of the strut rod (5) if necessary.

9 Check seal boot and ball joint of strut rod (5) for damage IMPORTANT Replace strut rod (5) if necessary.  
10 Install in the reverse order
