Removal and Installation: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
NOTE: When removing components such as hoses, tubes/lines, etc., cap or plug openings to prevent fluid from spilling.
  1. Release fuel pressure. Refer to Work Procedure .
  2. Remove oil pan (upper). Refer to Removal and Installation .
  3. Remove intake manifold. Refer to Removal and Installation .
  4. Remove fan bracket. Refer to Removal and Installation (Crankshaft driven type) .
  5. Remove drive belt auto-tensioner. Refer to Exploded View .
  6. Unbolt power steering oil pump and reposition. Refer to Component View - VK56VD .
  7. Remove generator, generator bracket and generator stay. Refer to Removal and Installation - VK56VD .
  8. Disengage power steering reservoir tank from power steering reservoir tank bracket and then remove power steering reservoir tank bracket. Refer to Component Location - VK56VD .
  9. Remove high pressure fuel pump and lifter. Refer to Exploded View .
    CAUTION: Do not reuse lifter.
  10. Remove radiator hose (upper) and radiator hose (lower). Refer to Exploded View .
  11. Remove water suction pipe. Refer to Exploded View .
  12. Remove rocker cover. Refer to Removal and Installation .
  13. Disconnect harness connectors from camshaft position sensors and remove camshaft position sensors.

    CAUTION:
    • Handle carefully to avoid dropping and shocks.
    • Do not disassemble.
    • Do not allow metal powder on magnetic part at sensor tip.
    • Do not place sensors in a location where they are exposed to magnetism.

    : Keep free from magnetic materials
  14. Disconnect heater hose (inlet) and oil cooler water hose (inlet) from multi-way control valve. Refer to Exploded View .
  15. Disconnect harness connector from multi-way control valve.
  16. Remove multi-way control valve. Refer to Exploded View .
    CAUTION: Do not reuse gasket.
  17. Remove valve timing control cover as per the following:
    1. Disconnect valve timing control solenoid valve harness connector.
    2. Loosen bolts in reverse of the sequence shown.

      CAUTION:
      • Exercise care not to damage mating surfaces.
      • Shaft is internally jointed with camshaft sprocket center hole. When removing, keep it horizontal until it is completely disconnected.

  18. Remove intake valve timing control solenoid valve [bank 1 and bank 2 (if necessary)].
    CAUTION: Do not reuse seal ring.
  19. Remove O-rings (1) from front cover.

    CAUTION: Do not reuse O-rings.
  20. Obtain No. 1 cylinder at TDC of its compression stroke. Refer to Inspection .
    CAUTION: Do not rotate crankshaft or camshaft sprockets after this step.
  21. Remove front oil seal. Refer to Removal and Installation .
    CAUTION:
    • Do not reuse front oil seal.
    • Be careful not to damage front cover.
  22. Remove water pump pulley. Refer to Exploded View .
  23. Remove front cover as per the following:
    1. Loosen bolts (A) and then remove high pressure fuel pump camshaft bracket (1).

    2. Loosen bolts in reverse of the sequence shown.

    3. Insert a suitable tool into the notch at front cover.
      CAUTION:
      • Exercise care not to damage mating surfaces.
      • After removal, handle front cover carefully so it does not tilt, cant, or warp under a load.
  24. Remove the oil pump drive spacer.

    • Hold and remove the flat space of the oil pump drive spacer by pulling it forward.
  25. Loosen oil pump assembly bolts and remove the oil pump assembly.
  26. Remove O-rings (1), (2), (3) from cylinder heads and cylinder block.

  27. Remove oil filter (for valve timing control solenoid valve) (if necessary).
  28. Remove timing chain tensioner cover from front cover (if necessary).
    • Use Tool to cut liquid gasket for removal.

      Tool number

      : KV10111100 (J-37228)
  29. Remove timing chain tensioner (bank 1) as per the following:
    NOTE: To remove timing chain and related parts, start with those on bank 1. The procedure for removing parts on bank 2 is omitted because it is the same as that for bank 1.
    1. Push both sides of spring (A) against spring tension, and then press in plunger with a slack guide (2).

      : Timing chain tensioner (bank 1)
    2. Insert a suitable tool (A) into the body hole, and then fix it with the plunger pushed in.

    3. Remove bolts and then remove timing chain tension (bank 1).
  30. Remove tension guide and slack guide.
  31. Remove timing chain and crankshaft sprocket.
    CAUTION: After removing timing chain, do not turn crankshaft and camshaft separately, or valves will strike the piston head.
  32. Remove high pressure fuel pump camshaft.
  33. Remove intake camshaft sprocket using the following procedure:
    • Secure the hexagonal portion (located in between journal No. 1 and journal No. 2) of drive shaft (A) using a suitable tool (B) to loosen bolt.

      NOTE: The figure shows an example of bank 2.

    CAUTION:
    • Do not loosen the bolt by securing anything other than the camshaft (drive shaft) hexagonal portion or with tensioning the timing chain.
    • When holding the hexagonal part of camshaft (drive shaft) with a suitable tool, be careful not to allow the suitable tool to cause interference with other parts.
    • Do not disassemble camshaft sprocket. [Do not loosen Intake bolts (A) and exhaust bolts (B) as shown in the figure.]

  34. To remove the exhaust camshaft sprocket, secure the hexagonal portion of the exhaust camshaft using a suitable tool and loosen the bolt.
  35. Use suitable tool to remove all traces of old liquid gasket from front cover and opposite mating surfaces.
    • Remove old liquid gasket from bolt hole and thread.
