ENGINE ASSEMBLY : Unit Removal & Installation: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Remove the engine cover. Refer to Removal and Installation .
  2. Release the fuel pressure. Refer to Work Procedure .
  3. Drain the engine coolant from radiator. Refer to Draining .
    CAUTION: Perform this step when the engine is cold.
  4. Discharge the refrigerant. Refer to Draining .
  5. Remove the battery tray. Refer to BATTERY TRAY : Removal & Installation .
  6. Remove the breather hose from air duct 1 and remove air duct 1. Refer to Exploded View .
  7. Unclip the fuel feed hose (1) from the clip (2).

  8. Disconnect the fuel feed hose from the high pressure fuel pump using the following procedure:
    1. Disengage (A) and pull up (B) the pawl of the fuel feed hose and fuel tube connector retainer (C) to disconnect the fuel feed hose from the high pressure fuel pump.

      NOTE: If the fuel feed hose is stuck, hold the fuel pipe by hand and disconnect it by pushing and pulling.
      CAUTION:
      • Keep parts away from heat source. Especially, be careful when welding is performed around them.
      • Do not expose parts to battery electrolyte or other acids.
      • Do not bend or twist connection between quick connector and fuel feed hose during installation/removal.
      • Pull quick connector while holding at location (D).
      • Do not remove the retainer.
      • Prepare a tray and waste beforehand as fuel leaks out.
      • Do not pull with lateral force applied. O-ring inside quick connector may be dama deg.

        Retainer color

        : Red
      • To prevent damage to each joint and protect it from the entry of foreign matter, cover the joint with plastic bag (A) or an equivalent.

  9. Remove the vacuum hose B from the vacuum pipe. Refer to Exploded View .
  10. remove the EVAP hose at the vacuum delay valve. Refer to Exploded View .
  11. Remove the battery positive terminal cover and disconnect the battery positive cable. Refer to BATTERY TERMINAL WITH FUSIBLE LINK : Exploded View .
  12. Remove the radiator hose (upper) from the water outlet.
  13. Remove the radiator hose (upper) from the filler neck and remove the radiator hose (upper).
  14. Remove the radiator hose (lower) from the water pump housing.
  15. Remove the CVT fluid cooler hoses from the CVT oil warmer. Refer to Exploded View .
  16. Release the pawls and separate the IPDM E/R (1) from the case.

  17. Disconnect the harness connectors from the IPDM E/R.
  18. Remove the fuse box cover.
  19. Remove harness (A) from fuse box and reposition.

  20. Disconnect harness connectors (B) from fuse box and reposition engine harness (C).
  21. Disconnect the control cable from the transaxle assembly using the following procedure:
    1. Remove the control cable nut. Refer to Exploded View .
    2. Remove the control cable from the manual lever.
    3. Remove the lock plate and disconnect the control cable from the bracket.
  22. Remove the ground cable from the strut tower (RH).
  23. Remove bolt (A) from low pressure flexible hose bracket (B).

  24. Remove bolt and separate the low-pressure flexible hose from the heat exchanger. Refer to Exploded View .
  25. Remove bolt and separate the high-pressure flexible hose from the condenser. Refer to Exploded View .
  26. Remove the torque rod.
  27. Remove wheel and tire. Refer to ROAD WHEEL TIRE : Removal & Installation .
  28. Using suitable tool (A) and Tool (B) release staked area (C) of wheel hub lock nut (D).

  29. Visually verify that staked area (A) of wheel hub lock nut (B) is completely released from front drive shaft (1) or damage to drive shaft can occur.

    WARNING: To avoid risk of death or severe personal injury:
    • Be sure that staked area of wheel hub lock nut is fully released or damage to drive shaft can occur.
    • Do not damage front drive shaft threads.
  30. Loosen wheel hub lock nut from drive shaft.
    WARNING: To avoid risk of death or severe personal injury:
    • Do not use power tool.
    • Do not damage front drive shaft threads.
    • Do not reuse drive shaft lock nut.
    • When loosening lock nut, if it does not turn smoothly, verify that staked area is completely released.
  31. Using a piece of wood and a suitable tool, tap on the lock nut to disengage drive shaft from wheel hub.

    WARNING: To avoid risk of death or severe personal injury:
    • Do not place drive shaft joint at an extreme angle. Be careful not to over extend slide joint.
    • Do not allow drive shaft to hang without support.
    NOTE: Use suitable puller if drive shaft cannot be separated from wheel hub and bearing assembly.
  32. Remove wheel hub lock nut.
    WARNING: To avoid risk of death or severe personal injury:
    • Do not reuse wheel hub lock nut.
  33. Remove the front suspension member using the following procedure:
    1. Remove hole cover. Refer to STEERING COLUMN : Exploded View .
    2. Remove pinch bolt and separate lower joint from steering gear. Refer to STEERING COLUMN : Exploded View .
      CAUTION: With the steering linkage disconnected, the spiral cable may snap by turning the steering wheel beyond the limited number of turns. Secure the steering wheel during removal of the front suspension member.
    3. Disconnect stabilizer connecting rods from front strut and coil spring (LH/RH). Refer to FRONT STABILIZER : Exploded View .
    4. Remove the nut and separate the outer socket from the steering knuckle (LH/RH) using a suitable tool. Refer to STEERING GEAR AND LINKAGE : Exploded View .
      CAUTION: Leave the outer socket nut half threaded on the outer socket to prevent damage to threads and to prevent the suitable tool from coming off suddenly.
    5. Remove lower pinch bolt and nut from steering knuckle. Refer to STEERING KNUCKLE : Exploded View .
    6. Disconnect the harness connectors from the steering gear.
    7. Partially remove the fender protector (RH) and (LH). Refer to FENDER PROTECTOR : Exploded View .
    8. Remove the bolt securing the rear torque rod to the rear torque rod bracket.
    9. Disconnect the harness connector from the heated oxygen sensor 2.
    10. Remove front exhaust tube. Refer to Exploded View .
    11. Set suitable jack (A) or equivalent tool under front suspension member.

    12. Remove front suspension member bolts. Refer to FRONT SUSPENSION MEMBER : Exploded View .
    13. Slowly lower hydraulic lift table (or equivalent tool) to remove the front suspension member from the vehicle.
  34. Remove bearing retainer to support bearing bracket bolts. Refer to FRONT DRIVE SHAFT : Exploded View .
  35. Insert suitable tool (A) between the drive shaft and the transaxle. Remove the drive shaft from the transaxle (LH/RH).

    Tool number

    : Drive shaft joint puller (Commercially available)
    CAUTION: Do not place drive shaft joint at an extreme angle when removing drive shaft. Also be careful not to overextend slide joint.
  36. Using a suitable tool, remove transfer cover oil seal.
    CAUTION:
    • When removing transfer cover oil seal with suitable tool, do not damage the transfer cover.
    • Do not reuse transfer cover oil seal.
  37. Remove the drive shaft oil seal (1) using a suitable tool (A).

    CAUTION: Do not reuse drive shaft oil seal.
  38. Remove side oil seal (LH). Refer to DIFFERENTIAL SIDE OIL SEAL : Removal & Installation .
  39. Disconnect the harness connectors from the TCM and electric intake valve timing control module.
  40. Reposition harness through wheel well and into engine bay.
  41. Remove ground cable from transaxle assembly.
  42. Remove rear plate cover. Refer to Exploded View .
  43. Remove the torque converter nuts. Refer to Exploded View .
  44. Remove the four lower transaxle assembly bolts. Refer to Exploded View .
  45. Remove propeller shaft assembly from transfer assembly and support using a suitable tool. Refer to REAR PROPELLER SHAFT : Exploded View .
  46. Use a suitable tool to securely support bottom of the engine and the transaxle assembly.

    CAUTION: Put a piece of wood or an equivalent as the supporting surface and secure in a stable condition.
  47. Remove bolts securing engine mounting insulator (LH/RH) to engine and transaxle assembly.
  48. Carefully lower suitable jack or raise lift to remove the engine and the transaxle assembly.
    CAUTION:
    • Check that no part interferes with the vehicle side.
    • Before and during this lifting, always check if any harnesses are left connected.
    • During the removal, always be careful to prevent the vehicle from falling off the lift due to changes in the center of gravity.
    • If necessary, support the vehicle by setting jack or suitable tool at the rear.
  49. Separate the engine and transmission assembly using the following procedure (if necessary):
    1. Disconnect the harness connectors from the following:
      • Primary speed sensor
      • Input speed sensor
      • Output speed sensor
      • Transmission range switch
      • CVT unit connector
    2. Separate harness retainers from transaxle assembly and reposition the harness.
    3. Remove CVT water hose from oil cooler. Refer to Exploded View .
    4. Remove CVT water hose from water pump housing. Refer to Exploded View .
    5. Remove thermostat hose from water outlet. Refer to Exploded View .
    6. Remove the CVT fluid charging pipe. Refer to Exploded View .
    7. Install engine slinger to front cover front left side (A) and cylinder head rear right side (B).

      Slinger bolts (C)

      : 22 N.m (2.2 kg-m, 16 ft-lb)
    8. Disconnect the "S" connector and the "B" terminal harness from the starter assembly. Refer to Exploded View .
    9. Remove starter assembly. Refer to Removal and Installation .
    10. Remove the catalyst gusset. Refer to Exploded View .
    11. Remove the support bearing bracket. Refer to Exploded View (LH), Exploded View (FWD RH), or Exploded View (AWD RH).
    12. Remove the transfer assembly. Refer to TRANSFER ASSEMBLY : Exploded View .
    13. Lift with a hoist and separate the engine from the transaxle assembly. Refer to Exploded View .
