Removing and installing instrument panel trim

When working on trim panel components, make sure that visible surfaces are not scratched or damaged (e.g. by sharp-edged tools).

Removal: 

Preliminary work needed:

The following parts must be removed as preliminary work.

For equipment specification with Head-Up Display, make sure that Head-Up Display is retracted.

1 Airbag. Refer to: AIRBAG UNIT , AIRBAG UNIT (SPORTS STEERING WHEEL) and STEERING WHEEL .
2 INSTRUMENT CLUSTER .
3 TRIM PANEL  for a-pillar, left/right.
4 COVER for head-up display.
5 MID-RANGE SPEAKERS .
6 CENTRAL INSTRUMENT and HEADUNIT .
7 left/right SIDE COVER  on dashboard.
8 GLOVE COMPARTMENT WITH HOUSING .
9 CENTER CONSOLE, COMPLETE .
10 CONTROL PANEL for air conditioning.
11 Fresh air grille, middle, left/right. Refer to: CENTER RIGHT FRESH AIR GRILLE andCENTER LEFT FRESH AIR GRILLE .
12 Bottom instrument PANEL TRIM .
13 Lower part/upper section of steering column shroud. Refer to: LOWER PART OF STEERING COLUMN SHROUD and STEERING COLUMN SHROUD UPPER SECTION .
14 STEERING COLUMN SWITCH CLUSTER .

Remove screw (1).

NOTE: Carry out work on the right side in the same way as for the left side illustrated here.

Unscrew the screws (1).

Release screws (1) on passenger's side.

NOTE: Shown removed here for purposes of clarity. The wiring harness is therefore not present in the graphic.

Disconnect plug connection (1) from front passenger airbag (2).

US version only (no diagram): 

Disconnect 3 plug connections (1) from front passenger airbag (2).

(Observe notes regarding AIRBAG PLUG CONNECTIONS ).

Release screws (1) on driver's side.

Remove dashboard with the help of a support person and guide out all electrical lines.

Installation: 

NOTE: Graphic is only an example.

Make sure that guides (1) on dashboard (2) are correctly seated in respective mountings of Firewall.

Make sure gaskets are correctly seated on air ducts.

Insert foam shaped part of dashboard (2) correctly at center and install.

Insert dashboard with the help of a support person and guide in all electrical lines.

NOTE: Screw down the dashboard starting from the middle and working towards the outside.
Make sure all electrical lines are correctly routed.

Tighten down screws (1).

Tightening torque 51 45 1AZ .

Tighten screws (1) on driver's side.

Tightening torque 51 45 1AZ .

Connect plug connection (1) of front passenger airbag (2) and lock.

US version only (no diagram): 

Connect 3 plug connections (1) passenger airbag (2) and lock.

(Observe notes regarding AIRBAG PLUG CONNECTIONS ).

Tighten screws (1) on passenger's side.

Tightening torque 51 45 1AZ .

Tighten screw (1).

Tightening torque 51 45 1AZ .

The following parts must be installed as follow-up work.

1 Airbag. Refer to: AIRBAG UNIT , AIRBAG UNIT (SPORTS STEERING WHEEL) and STEERING WHEEL .
2 INSTRUMENT CLUSTER .
3 TRIM PANEL  for a-pillar on left/right.
4 COVER for head-up display.
5 MID-RANGE SPEAKERS .
6 CENTRAL INSTRUMENT and HEADUNIT .
7 Left/right SIDE PANEL  on dashboard.
8 GLOVE COMPARTMENT WITH HOUSING .
9 CENTER CONSOLE SUPPORT .
10 CONTROL PANEL for air conditioning.
11 Fresh air grille, middle, left/right. Refer to: CENTER RIGHT FRESH AIR GRILLE and CENTER LEFT FRESH AIR GRILLE .
12 Bottom instrument PANEL TRIM .
13 Lower part/upper section of steering column shroud. Refer to: LOWER PART OF STEERING COLUMN SHROUD and STEERING COLUMN SHROUD UPPER SECTION .
14 STEERING COLUMN SWITCH CLUSTER .
