REMOVING Remove     
1 Shift the transmission (1) into neutral position.    
2 Release parking brake.    
3 Remove voltage of high-voltage on-board electrical system. Transmission 725.163 in model 290 with engine 177.8 AR47.70-P-1000FRH
4 Secure vehicle to prevent it moving away.    
5 Disconnect ground line from battery.   AR54.10-P-0003FR
6 Secure vehicle on vehicle lift.   AR00.60-P-1006A
7 Drain coolant from low-temperature circuit.   AR09.41-P-6834MNI
8 Loosen catalytic converters. Left catalytic converter AR49.20-P-0101MNI
    Right catalytic converter AR49.20-P-0102MNI
9 Remove starter wiring harness and electric lines of lambda sensors from left holder for starter wiring harness (10) at top. Transmission 725.0 in model 290 with engine 177 with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)  
10 Remove upper screw of left holder for starter wiring harness (10). Transmission 725.0 in model 290 with engine 177 with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)  
11 Remove lower screw of left holder for starter wiring harness (10) and remove left holder for starter wiring harness (10). Transmission 725.0 in model 290 with engine 177 with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)  
12 Remove right holder for starter wiring harness (10) from transmission (1). Transmission 725.0 in model 290 with engine 177 with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)  
13 Remove holders of lower rear engine compartment lining.    
14 Remove rear propeller shaft.   AR41.10-P-0050MNI
15 Remove right coolant hose (3) from oil cooler (4).   AR20.20-P-7441-01RQ

16 Remove coolant hoses (3) from coolant lines SPECIAL TOOL Record plug Fig 2
17 Release oil lines at transmission end.   AR27.55-P-0600MNI 
18 Remove oil cooler (4) with connected oil lines.   AR27.55-P-1000MNI 
19 Remove holders (5, 6).    
20 Disconnect ground line of transmission (1) from underbody.    
21 Remove heat shield.   AR27.40-P-0700-01LF 
22 Release and disconnect electrical connector of fully integrated transmission control controller unit (Y3/8) from transmission (1).    
23 Remove transmission wiring harness holder from oil pan.    
24 Unclip wiring harness to transfer case at rear engine carrier. SPECIAL TOOL Clip remover Fig 4
25 Release and disconnect electrical connector from all-wheel drive control unit (N45).   AR28.19-P-1003MNI
26 Release and disconnect electrical connector from transmission oil temperature sensor.   AR28.19-P-1007MNI
27 Support transmission (1) with major-assembly support and mounting plate and strap down securely.

28 Remove front axle differential propeller shaft (14) from front axle differential.   AR41.10-P-0070MNI
29 Remove screws (9).    
30 Screw guide pins into threaded holes of screws (9). SPECIAL TOOL Guide pins Fig 3
31 Lower the transmission (1) until all screws (8) are accessible.    
32 Support front of engine between front axle carrier and engine using wooden wedge. NOTES
Support engine.
Otherwise, when dismantling the transmission (1), the wet clutch will be damaged.
 
33 Remove cover from opening (arrow).    
34 Carefully pry off wet clutch through opening (arrow) from two-mass flywheel. SPECIAL TOOL Long wedge Fig 1
35.1 Remove starter (M1) from transmission (1), place to one side with connected lines, and fasten. Transmission 725.0 in model 290 with engine 177 with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)
NOTES
Do not crush or kink electric lines.
Malfunctions will otherwise occur.
NOTES
Secure starter (M1) against falling down.
Damage will otherwise occur.

35.2 Counterhold nuts (13) and remove screws (11). Transmission 725.163 in model 290 with engine 177.8  
36 Remove caps (12). Transmission 725.163 in model 290 with engine 177.8  
37 Remove bolts (8).    
38 Secure front axle differential propeller shaft (14) at transmission (1) against falling down.    
39 Carefully pull transmission (1) with wet clutch over the guide pins rearwards and lower downwards. NOTES
Secure wet clutch against falling down.
Damage will otherwise occur.
IMPORTANT If the wet clutch is tilted on the two-mass flywheel it will be pulled out of the transmission (1).
 
    IMPORTANT Aid of helper required.
If the wet clutch was pulled out of the transmission (1),
↓
replace sealing rings and sinuous springs.

40 Remove wet clutch. When replacing the transmission (1).

INSTALLING Install     
41 Insert wet clutch. After removing the wet clutch.

42 Release wet clutch locking clip and carefully position transmission (1) with wet clutch over guide pins on the engine. IMPORTANT Aid of helper required.  
43 Unfasten locking clip of front axle differential propeller shaft (14).    
44 Screw in screws (8). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/nut, transmission to engine *BA27.10-P-1001-04H 
45 Install caps (12).    
46.1 Release mounting of the starter (M1) and mount starter (M1) onto the transmission (1). Transmission 725.0 in model 290 with engine 177 with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive) AR15.30-P-7100MNI
46.2 Counterhold nuts (13) and screw in screws (11). Transmission 725.163 in model 290 with engine 177.8
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/nut, transmission to engine

47 Install cover for opening (arrow).    
48 Remove wooden wedge at front between front axle carrier and engine.    
49 Remove guide pins from threaded holes of screws (9). SPECIAL TOOL Guide pins Fig 3
50 Screw in screws (9). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/nut, transmission to engine *BA27.10-P-1001-04H 
51 Attach front axle differential propeller shaft (14) to front axle differential.   AR41.10-P-0070MNI
52 Release tie-down straps of transmission (1) and remove major assembly mount and mounting plate.

53 Connect and lock electrical connector of transmission oil temperature sensor. Transmission 725.09 in model 290 with engine 177

54 Connect electrical connector of the control unit for all-wheel drive (N45) and lock. Transmission 725.09 in model 290 with engine 177

55 Clip wiring harness to transfer case at rear engine carrier.    
56 Attach transmission wiring harness holder to oil pan. TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw, electrical wiring harness holder to oil pan *BA27.10-P-1035-04H 
57 Connect and lock electrical connector of fully integrated transmission control electric controller unit (Y3/8) on transmission (1).    
58 Install heat shield.   AR27.40-P-0700-01LF 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, heat shield to oil pan *BA27.10-P-1009-04H 
59 Connect ground line of transmission (1) to underbody. TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt/nut, ground line to transmission/underfloor *BA00.19-P-1039-02D 
60 Install holders (5, 6). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, exhaust system bracket to transmission *BA49.10-P-1009-02E 
61 Install oil cooler (4) with connected oil lines.   AR27.55-P-1000MNI 
62 Lock oil lines at transmission end.   AR27.55-P-0600MNI 
63 Attach coolant hoses (3) to coolant lines (2).    
64 Attach right coolant hose (3) at oil cooler (4).   AR20.20-P-7441-01RQ
65 Install rear propeller shaft.   AR41.10-P-0050MNI
66 Install holders of lower rear engine compartment lining.    
67 Attach right holder for starter wiring harness (10) to transmission (1). Transmission 725.0 in model 290 with engine 177 with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw, cable duct to transmission bell housing

68 Position left holder for starter wiring harness (10) at transmission (1) and screw in lower screw of left holder for starter wiring harness (10). Transmission 725.0 in model 290 with engine 177 with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)

70 Mount starter wiring harness and electric lines of lambda sensors at left holder for starter wiring harness (10). Transmission 725.0 in model 290 with engine 177 with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)  
71 Fasten catalytic converters. Left catalytic converter AR49.20-P-0101MNI
    Right catalytic converter AR49.20-P-0102MNI
72 Connect ground line to battery.   AR54.10-P-0003FR
73 Add low-temperature circuit coolant. IMPORTANT Only install lower engine compartment 'paneling after leak test. AR09.41-P-6834MNI
74 Put the high-voltage on-board electrical system into operation. Transmission 725.163 in model 290 with engine 177.8 AR47.70-P-1000FRH
75 Check and correct transmission oil level.   AR27.00-P-0270EWN 
76 Read out and delete fault memory.    
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS     AD00.00-P-2000-06FR
77 Perform transmission adaptation with vehicle diagnosis system. When replacing or repairing the transmission (1).

WARNING Risk of accident  from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury  (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts. AS00.00-Z-0005-01A
78 Perform engine test run and check transmission (1) for proper operation and leak tightness.    
79 Install lower engine compartment paneling.   AR61.20-P-1105FRX
80 Disconnect vehicle from vehicle lift.   AR00.60-P-1006A
