Remove/install front axle - AR33.10-P-0100T

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
DANGER Risk of injury  caused by body parts being jammed or crushed. Risk of injury  to skin and eyes caused by brake fluid spraying out at high pressure when working on the SBC brake system Deactivate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS. AS42.46-Z-0001-01A
DANGER Risk of injury  to skin or eyes caused by hydraulic fluid spraying out under high pressure. Risk of poisoning  caused by swallowing hydraulic fluid Depressurize the hydraulic system completely before starting any work on the system. Wear protective clothing and safety glasses. AS00.00-Z-0013-01A
NOTES Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts   AH00.00-N-0001-01A
NOTES Before opening the SBC system, thoroughly clean the surrounding area of the separation point. Even minute particles of dirt, introduced into the hydraulic components, can result in malfunctions and a total failure of the SBC system    
NOTES When working on the front-end assembly, be careful not to scratch, mark or notch the surfaces of aluminum parts. Otherwise the service life of the parts will be affected    
IMPORTANTInstallation  Only tighten nuts and bolts of chassis components when vehicle is in a ready-to-drive condition.    
1 Deactivate easy entry/exit function Vehicles with code 275, Memory package (driver seat, steering column, mirrors)
NOTES Otherwise the driver seat and steering wheel move into a different position if the driver door is opened or closed for example. The upper frame may be damaged when the holding device is installed.
IMPORTANT Deactivation is done using the buttons on the steering wheel in the "comfort" menu of the multifunction display; see operator's manual.

2 Deactivate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS. Vehicles with Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC)
IMPORTANT The following steps should be run through in STAR DIAGNOSIS:
Select menu item "SBC Sensotronic Brake Control"/"Deactivate 'SBC' system".
Then process all the individual steps from top to bottom.

3 Empty front suspension struts (7) using STAR DIAGNOSIS Vehicles with code 489 Airmatic (semi-active air suspension)

4 Turn front wheels to straight-ahead position and secure steering wheel with holding device NOTES On a disengaged steering coupling (9) the steering wheel should not be turned because the spiral contact coil will be destroyed.
IMPORTANT Swivel sun visor to side and insert retainer.

5.1 Remove trim panels of the cylinder head cover and of the charge air manifold Engines 646, 647 AR01.20-P-5014-02A

5.2 Remove air filter housing with air ducts Engines 112, 113.967
IMPORTANT Pull air filter housing vertically upwards off the rubber retainers on the cylinder head covers.
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Engine 112, 113.967: Rub liquid lubricant into rubber holder on cylinder head covers and sealing ring of hot film mass air flow sensor in the air filter housing.

8 Remove the front wheels    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE Remove/install wheels AP40.10-P-4050Z
9 Installing protective washers to protect brake disk dust shields   AR42.00-P-0100-01A
SPECIAL TOOL Guard plates *220589013100
10 Remove left front RPM sensor (L6/1) and right front RPM sensor (L6/2) from steering knuckles (5) and hang to one side Vehicles without AIRmatic
IMPORTANT To do this, remove bolts (6a) and unclip electrical feed lines for left and right front RPM sensors from retaining clips.
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Note correct installation position; the scuff protection (5a) has to be bolted to the RPM sensor as illustrated. It must not be mounted between the RPM sensor and steering knuckle.
 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Self-locking bolt, front axle RPM sensor to steering knuckle *BA42.30-P-1001-01A 
11 Disconnect left front brake pad contact sensor (S10/1) and right front brake pad contact sensor (S10/2) at connectors. Vehicles without AIRmatic  
12 Remove electrical feed lines (10a) of the front brake pad contact sensors on left and right from the brake calipers Vehicles without AIRmatic  
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, brake pad contact sensor to brake caliper *BA42.10-P-1003-10H 
DANGER Risk of poisoning  caused by swallowing brake fluid. Risk of injury  caused by brake fluid coming into contact with skin and eyes. Only pour brake fluid into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling brake fluid. AS42.50-Z-0001-01A

13 Unscrew brake lines (52) on the left and right from the brake hoses (51) and seal openings IMPORTANT Seal off line connections immediately with plugs. The brake fluid expansion reservoir must not be allowed to run completely empty.
IMPORTANT When releasing or fastening the brake line on the brake hose, make sure that its bracket (51a) is not twisted. Use an open-end wrench as a countersupport on the sides of the brake hose fitting.
NOTESInstallation:  The brake hoses must not be twisted after being tightened (danger of cracking).

16 Detach upper transverse control arm (8) from front end   AR33.20-P-0500T 
17.1 Remove bottom section of soundproofing Vehicles with diesel engine
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Do not install bottom section of soundproofing until after rack-and-pinion steering (10) has been checked for leaks.

17.2 Remove bottom engine compartment paneling Vehicles with gasoline engine
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Do not install the engine compartment paneling until after the rack-and-pinion steering (10) has been checked for leaks.

18 Pull steering coupling (9) off rack-and-pinion steering (10).   AR46.10-P-8000T
19 Detach left and right front engine mount (11) from front axle carrier (1). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, front engine mount to front axle carrier *BA22.10-P-1002-03A 
20 Separate electrical connector from SPS [PML] solenoid valve (Y10) Vehicles with code 213 Speed-sensitive power steering
21 Remove cable tie (arrow) and place electric feed line of SPS [PML] solenoid valve (Y10) to the side Vehicles with code 213 Speed-sensitive power steering  
22 Detach retaining plate (12) and bolt (13) from rack-and-pinion steering (10) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, oil line retaining plate to rack-and-pinion steering *BA46.20-P-1001-01F 
23 Pull oil lines (30f, 30i) out of rack-and-pinion steering (10) and place aside NOTES Before opening the hydraulic circuit of the rack-and-pinion steering, thoroughly clean the surrounding area of the separation point. Even the smallest particles of dirt, introduced into the hydraulic components, can lead to malfunctions of the rack-and-pinion steering.
IMPORTANT Collect escaping hydraulic fluid in a container and seal line connections with stop plugs.
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Replace O-rings.

24 Support and secure the front subframe (1) with the transmission jack and transmission plate Transmission platform, transmission jack, refer to GOTIS

25 Remove bolts (1a, 1b) IMPORTANTRear  threaded connection when replacing  front axle carrier:
For a front axle carrier without  welded-on shim (1c) a washer with groove (refer to EPC) is required between the bolt (1a) and the front axle carrier (1).
For a front axle carrier using  welded-on shim (1c) an additional washer must not be used.

27 Check front axle for damage, replace damaged parts    
28 Install in the reverse order

30 Perform engine test run and check rack-and-pinion steering (10) for leaks    
31.1 Bleed brake system with STAR DIAGNOSIS Vehicles with Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC)
IMPORTANT The following steps should be run through in STAR DIAGNOSIS:
Select menu item "Initial startup after repair"/"After opening or exchanging one or more brake hoses".
Then process all the individual steps from top to bottom.
IMPORTANT When performing the bleeding operation always observe the instructions in the document "Bleeding brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS".
