Remove/install camshafts - AR05.20-P-6992GZ (ML500)

REMOVING Removing    
1 Remove cylinder head covers with ignition coils   AR01.20-P-5014GZ
2 Set crankshaft to a 40° crank angle after ignition TDC of cylinder 1 and check engine timing NOTES The engine must not be turned back; otherwise the timing chain can get jammed.
IMPORTANT Rotate engine at crankshaft in direction of engine rotation of engine until scribe mark 40° on pulley / vibration damper corresponds with scribe mark on the timing case. The grooves on camshafts must be pointing toward the inner V.

    SPECIAL TOOL Right locating plate Fig 2

3 Remove chain tensioner (2)   AR05.10-P-7800GZ 
4 Remove camshaft Hall sensor (B6/1)   AR15.10-P-2000GZ
5 Detach camshaft sprocket, take off IMPORTANT Tie camshaft sprocket and timing chain together with cable tie (5).  
    SPECIAL TOOL Open-end wrench Fig 4
6 Take off camshaft bearing bridge (4) IMPORTANT Observe slackening diagram! AR05.20-P-7103GZ 
7 Remove camshaft    
INSTALLING Install     
8 Insert camshaft IMPORTANT Pay attention to camshaft marking when installing camshaft.  
IMPORTANT Camshaft code number and assignment   AH05.20-N-0100-01A 
    IMPORTANT Oil the bearing surfaces!
Pay attention to correct position of cap on front end of camshaft.
 
9 Install camshaft bearing bridge (4). IMPORTANT Observe tightening procedure. AR05.20-P-7103GZ 
NOTES Information on installing the camshaft bearing bridge   AH05.20-P-2000-01AV 
10 Rotate camshaft to basic position   AR05.20-P-6020GZ 
    SPECIAL TOOL Right locating plate Fig 2
    SPECIAL TOOL Left locating plate Fig 3
11 Install camshaft sprocket IMPORTANT Take off cable tie (5)!  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA05.20-P-1001-01B 
    SPECIAL TOOL Open-end wrench Fig 4
    SPECIAL TOOL Insertion tool Fig 5
    SPECIAL TOOL Torque wrench Fig 6
12 Install camshaft Hall sensor (B6/1)   AR15.10-P-2000GZ
13 Install chain tensioner (2)   AR05.10-P-7800GZ 
14 Check engine valve timing   AR05.10-P-6858GZ 
15 Install cylinder head covers   AR01.20-P-5014GZ
