Removal And Installation
REMOVAL
- Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable(s). Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Remove any necessary skid plates. Refer to PLATE, SKID, FRONT SUSPENSION, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION , PLATE, SKID, FUEL TANK, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION and PLATE, SKID, TRANSFER CASE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Mark the propeller shaft and axle companion flanges for assembly alignment.
- Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to SHAFT, DRIVE, REAR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- If equipped, remove the front propeller shaft. Refer to SHAFT, DRIVE, FRONT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- If equipped, remove the transfer case. For BW44-46, Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION . For BW44-47, Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Remove the catalytic converters and, if equipped, the Y-pipe assembly. Refer to PIPE, EXHAUST, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
and PIPE, EXHAUST, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
.
- Remove the two inspection cover fasteners (2) and the inspection cover (1).
- Through the access cover opening, rotate crankshaft in clockwise direction until torque converter bolts (1) are accessible. Then remove the six bolts one at a time. Rotate crankshaft with socket wrench on dampener bolt.CAUTION:
Tag the orientation of all electrical connectors. Some electrical connectors may be interchangeable, damage to the electrical system may occur if the connectors are reversed.
- Disconnect the output speed sensor (1) wire harness connector.
- Disconnect the transmission valve body solenoid wire harness connector (2) and position harness aside.
- Disconnect the transmission range sensor wire harness connector (1) and position harness aside.
- Disconnect the cooler line temperature sensor wire harness connector and position harness aside.
- Disconnect any remaining transmission wiring harness clips from the case.
- Disconnect the gearshift cable ball socket (1) from transmission manual valve lever.
- Release the locking tabs from the gearshift cable and remove the cable from the bracket and position a side.
- Disconnect the transmission vent tube (1) from the transmission.
- Remove the bolt (1) securing the transmission fill tube.
- Separate the transmission fill tube (2) from the transmission and position it aside.
- Support the rear of engine with a safety stand (3) or jack.CAUTION:
The engine must be supported when removing the transmission. Failure to do so will result in damage to the exhaust system and other components.
- Support the transmission where the transmission oil pan meets the transmission case.
- Raise the transmission slightly with a service jack to relieve load on the crossmember and supports.
- Remove the crossmember. Refer to CROSSMEMBER, TRANSMISSION, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
.
- Disconnect the transmission cooler temperature sensor wire harness connector (1).
- Disconnect the transmission fluid cooler lines at the transmission fittings (1) with quick connect tool (special tool #9546, Disconnect Tool).
- Remove the eight remaining converter housing bolts (1).
- Carefully work the transmission and torque converter assembly rearward off the engine block dowels.
- Hold the torque converter in place during the transmission removal.
- Lower the transmission (2) and remove the assembly from under the vehicle.CAUTION:
Verify that transmission is secure on the lifting device or work surface, the center of gravity of the transmission will shift when the torque converter is removed creating an unstable condition. The torque converter is a heavy unit. Use caution when separating the torque converter from the transmission.
- To remove the torque converter, carefully slide the torque converter out of the transmission.
INSTALLATION
After the installation of the transmission, perform the transmission verification test. Refer to TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .

If the torque converter hub is severely scored or gouged, it must be replaced.
- Check torque converter hub and hub drive flats for sharp edges burrs, scratches, or nicks. Polish the hub and flats with 320/400 grit paper and crocus cloth if necessary. The hub must be smooth to avoid damaging pump seal at installation.
- If a replacement transmission is being installed, transfer any components necessary, such as the manual shift lever and shift cable bracket, from the original transmission to the replacement transmission.
- Lubricate oil pump seal lip with trans jell or petroleum jelly.
- Align converter and oil pump.
- Carefully insert the torque converter in oil pump. Then rotate converter back and forth until fully seated in pump gears.
- Check the converter seating with a steel scale (1) and straightedge (2). The surface of the converter lugs should be at least 28.2 mm (1.12 in.) to rear of the straightedge when the converter is fully seated.
- Temporarily secure converter with C-clamp.
- Position transmission on jack and secure it with chains.
- Check condition of the flexplate. Replace the flexplate if cracked, distorted or damaged.NOTE:
Also be sure transmission dowel pins are seated in engine block and protrude far enough to hold transmission in alignment.
- Align the close tolerance torque converter bolt hole (1) in the flexplate so that the first torque converter bolt is installed here. The close tolerance bolt hole may be identified by two white painted lines (2) flanking the bolt hole.
- Support the rear of the engine with a safety jack.CAUTION:
The engine must be supported when removing the transmission. Failure to do so will result in damage to the exhaust system and other components.
- Raise transmission (2) and align the torque converter with the flexplate and transmission converter housing with the engine block (1).
- Move the transmission forward. Then raise, lower or tilt the transmission to align the converter housing with engine block dowels.
- Carefully work transmission forward and over engine block dowels until converter hub is seated in crankshaft. Verify that no wires, or the transmission vent hose, have become trapped between the engine block and the transmission.
- Install the exhaust bracket to the right side on the converter housing.CAUTION:
Ensure that the transmission bell housing and the engine block are flush before installing the bolts. Never utilize the mounting bolts to draw the transmission to the engine.
- Install the bolts to attach the transmission to the engine and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to SPECIFICATIONS .NOTE:

CAUTION:It is essential that correct length bolts be used to attach the converter to the driveplate. Failure to follow this caution may result in transmission damage.
- Hand start a NEW torque converter to flexplate bolt in the torque converter (1) and tighten to 20 N.m (15 ft. lbs.), then back it off 1/2 turn.
- Rotate the crankshaft 180 degrees in a clockwise direction and hand start a NEW torque converter to flexplate bolt (2) and tighten to 100 Nm (74 ft-lbs).
- Rotate crankshaft 60 degrees in a clockwise direction and hand start a NEW torque converter to flexplate bolt (3) and tighten to 100 Nm (74 ft-lbs).
- Rotate crankshaft 60 degrees in a clockwise direction and hand start a NEW torque converter to flexplate bolt (4) and tighten to 100 Nm (74 ft-lbs).
- Rotate crankshaft 60 degrees and tighten the first bolt installed (1) to 100 Nm (74 ft-lbs).
- Rotate crankshaft 60 degrees in a clockwise direction and hand start a NEW torque converter to flexplate bolt (5) and tighten to 100 Nm (74 ft-lbs).
- Rotate crankshaft 60 degrees in a clockwise direction and hand start a NEW
torque converter to flexplate bolt (6) and tighten to 100 Nm (74 ft-lbs).
- Install the torque converter bolt access cover (1).
- Connect the transmission vent hose.
- Install transfer case, if equipped. For BW44-46, Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION . For BW44-47, Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- If removed, install rear support to transmission. Tighten bolts to the proper torque specification. Refer to SPECIFICATIONS .CAUTION:
If replacing a engine mount / bracket, be certain to inspect all other engine mounts in the system. Failure to follow this caution may result in damage to the vehicle.
- Install the crossmember. Refer to CROSSMEMBER, TRANSMISSION, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Lower transmission onto crossmember.
- Install the nuts (2) securing transmission mount to the cross member and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to SPECIFICATIONS .
- Remove engine support fixture.CAUTION:
Install the electrical connectors correctly. Some electrical connectors may be interchangeable, damage to the electrical system may occur if the connectors are reversed.
- Connect wire harness connector (2) to the transmission range sensor (1).
- Connect the cooler line temperature sensor (1).
- Connect the valve body solenoid connector (1) to the valve body solenoid receptacle.
- If removed, install shift cable bracket and the shift cable bracket bolts and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the shift cable (2) into the shift cable bracket.
- Connect gearshift cable ball socket (4) from transmission manual valve lever (3).
- Connect the wire harness to the output speed sensor (1).
- Clip any remaining wiring harness to the proper position on the transmission case.
- Connect cooler lines to transmission fittings (1).NOTE:
Make sure that the jiffy tite fittings locks are in place.
- Install transmission fill tube (1) and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the rear propeller shaft. Refer to SHAFT, DRIVE, REAR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- If equipped, install the front propeller shaft. Refer to SHAFT, DRIVE, FRONT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Adjust gearshift cable if necessary.
- Install any skid plates removed previously. Refer to PLATE, SKID, FRONT SUSPENSION, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION , PLATE, SKID, FUEL TANK, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION and PLATE, SKID, TRANSFER CASE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Lower vehicle.
- Fill transmission with MOPAR® ASRC Automatic Transmission Fluid. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Perform the transmission verification test. Refer to TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
