Removal And Installation

REMOVAL
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Drain the transfer case lubricant.
- Mark the front and rear propeller shafts for alignment reference.
- If equipped, remove the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) tank. Refer to TANK, DIESEL EXHAUST FLUID, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Support the transmission with a jack stand.
- Remove the transfer case skid plate, if equipped. Refer to PLATE, SKID, TRANSFER CASE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Disconnect the front and rear propeller shafts at transfer case.
- Disconnect the transfer case vent hose.
- Disconnect the shift linkage at the transfer case lever.
- Disconnect the coil wire harness connector.
- Unplug the transfer case position indicator switch.
- Support the transfer case with transmission jack.
- Secure the transfer case to jack with jack straps or chains.
- Remove the nuts attaching transfer case to transmission.
- Pull the transfer case and jack rearward to disengage the transfer case.
- Remove the transfer case from under the vehicle.
INSTALLATION
- Mount the transfer case on a transmission jack.
- Secure the transfer case to jack with chains.
- Position the transfer case under vehicle.
- Align the transfer case and transmission shafts, then install transfer case onto the transmission.
- Install and tighten the transfer case attaching nuts to proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Remove the transmission jack and support stand.
- Connect the vent hose.
- Connect the shift position sensor connector.
- Connect the shift linkage.
- Connect the transfer case coil wire connector.
- Align and install the propeller shafts. Refer to SHAFT, DRIVE, FRONT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION and SHAFT, DRIVE, REAR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Fill the transfer case with correct fluid. Refer to TRANSFER CASE/FLUID - STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- If equipped, install the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) tank. Refer to TANK, DIESEL EXHAUST FLUID, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Install the transfer case skid plate, if equipped. Refer to PLATE, SKID, TRANSFER CASE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
- Verify transfer case shift operation.
