Removal And Installation

REMOVAL

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  2. Drain the transfer case lubricant.
  3. Mark the front and rear propeller shafts for alignment reference.
  4. If equipped, remove the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) tank. Refer to TANK, DIESEL EXHAUST FLUID, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  5. Support the transmission with a jack stand.
  6. Remove the transfer case skid plate, if equipped. Refer to PLATE, SKID, TRANSFER CASE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  7. Disconnect the front and rear propeller shafts at transfer case.
  8. Disconnect the transfer case vent hose.
  9. Disconnect the shift linkage at the transfer case lever.
  10. Disconnect the coil wire harness connector.
  11. Unplug the transfer case position indicator switch.
  12. Support the transfer case with transmission jack.
  13. Secure the transfer case to jack with jack straps or chains.
  14. Remove the nuts attaching transfer case to transmission.
  15. Pull the transfer case and jack rearward to disengage the transfer case.
  16. Remove the transfer case from under the vehicle.

INSTALLATION

  1. Mount the transfer case on a transmission jack.
  2. Secure the transfer case to jack with chains.
  3. Position the transfer case under vehicle.
  4. Align the transfer case and transmission shafts, then install transfer case onto the transmission.
  5. Install and tighten the transfer case attaching nuts to proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  6. Remove the transmission jack and support stand.
  7. Connect the vent hose.
  8. Connect the shift position sensor connector.
  9. Connect the shift linkage.
  10. Connect the transfer case coil wire connector.
  11. Align and install the propeller shafts. Refer to SHAFT, DRIVE, FRONT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION and SHAFT, DRIVE, REAR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  12. Fill the transfer case with correct fluid. Refer to TRANSFER CASE/FLUID - STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  13. If equipped, install the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) tank. Refer to TANK, DIESEL EXHAUST FLUID, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  14. Install the transfer case skid plate, if equipped. Refer to PLATE, SKID, TRANSFER CASE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  15. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
  16. Verify transfer case shift operation.
