Cover(S), Engine Timing: Removal

  1. Perform the fuel pressure release procedure. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  2. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), disconnect the IBS connector first before disconnecting the negative battery cable.
  3. Remove the resonator. .
  4. Remove the air cleaner body. Refer to REMOVAL  .
  5. Remove the coolant recovery bottle. Refer to BOTTLE, PRESSURIZED COOLANT, REMOVAL .
  6. Remove the cylinder head cover. Refer to REMOVAL  .

  7. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  8. Remove the frame cover portion of the right splash shield. Refer to SHIELD, SPLASH, REAR WHEELHOUSE, REMOVAL .
    CAUTION:

    When aligning timing marks, always rotate engine by turning the crankshaft. Failure to do so will result in valve or piston damage.

  9. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise (as viewed from the front) to align the timing cover mark (1) with the damper notch (2) to place the number one cylinder piston at top-dead-center on the compression stroke.

  10. Remove the accessory drive belt (1). Refer to BELT, SERPENTINE, REMOVAL .
  11. Remove the accessory drive belt idler pulley (3). Refer to PULLEY, IDLER, REMOVAL .
  12. Remove the accessory drive belt tensioner (2). Refer to TENSIONER, BELT, REMOVAL .
  13. Remove the crankshaft damper (4). Refer to REMOVAL  .
  14. Remove three bolts (6) and the water pump pulley (5) from the water pump.

    NOTE:

    The oil pan will need to be removed and immediately reinstalled. This procedure is necessary because the oil pan sealant must be broken to allow the timing cover to be removed without damage to the oil pan. The reason the pan is to be reinstalled is to allow for a support surface when the timing cover is removed. 

  15. Remove the oil pan. Refer to REMOVAL  .
  16. Temporarily reinstall the oil pan. Install the oil pan bolts finger tight. Do not install  the four oil pan to timing cover bolts (1) at this time.

  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18. Support the engine with a suitable jack.
  19. Remove the right engine mount insulator. Refer to REMOVAL  .
  20. Remove one M8 studbolt (1), six M6 bolts (2), two M8 bolts (3) and five M10 bolts (4).

  21. Remove the engine timing cover using pry points (1, 2 and 3).

  22. Remove the engine timing cover (1) out through the bottom of the vehicle.
