Retrieving Codes (Scan Tool)

NOTE: All diagnostic tests are written specifically for New Generation Star (NGS) tester. Most generic scan tools should be able to perform all test procedures.

Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC), located beneath instrument panel. Using NGS tester, perform data link diagnostics test. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - WINDSTAR article. If NGS tester responds with CKT914, CKT915 or CKT70 = ALL ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, repair module communications concern. See MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - WINDSTAR article. If NGS tester displays NO RESP/NOT EQUIP for instrument cluster, perform TEST A: NO COMMUNICATION WITH INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under SYSTEM TESTS. If NGS tester displays NO RESP/NOT EQUIP for Front Electronics Module (FEM), perform TEST B: NO COMMUNICATION WITH FRONT ELECTRONICS MODULE (FEM)  under SYSTEM TESTS. If NGS tester displays NO RESP/NOT EQUIP for Rear Electronic Module (REM), perform TEST C: NO COMMUNICATION WITH REAR ELECTRONICS MODULE (REM)  under SYSTEM TESTS.

If NGS tester responds with SYSTEM PASSED, retrieve and record continuous DTC. Erase continuous DTC. Using NGS tester, perform instrument cluster, FEM and REM self-test. Perform appropriate test in accordance with DTC retrieved. See FRONT ELECTRONIC MODULE DTC INDEX , INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DTC INDEX , MESSAGE CENTER MODULE (MCM) DTC INDEX  and/or REAR ELECTRONIC MODULE DTC INDEX  table. Codes listed in these table are only for testing covered in this article. For complete DTC listing, see MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - WINDSTAR article. If no DTC are retrieved, repair by symptom. See SYMPTOM INDEX  table under SYSTEM TESTS.

(2) Clear and document all DTC. Perform Front Electronic Module (FEM) self-test. If DTC B1342 is retrieved again, replace FEM.
