Test K: Brake Warning Indicator Never/Always On
NOTE:
Before testing, ensure brake fluid level is correct.
- Turn ignition switch to ON position. Observe brake warning indicator. Turn ignition switch to START position. Observe brake warning indicator. If brake warning indicator does not illuminate for 3 seconds, then turn off, go to next step. If brake warning indicator illuminates for 3 seconds, then turns off, system is okay. Repeat Front Electronic Module (FEM) and instrument cluster self-test.
- Using New Generation Star (NGS) tester, perform FEM self-test. If DTC C1189 is retrieved, go to next step. If DTC B2479 is retrieved, go to step 10. If no DTCs are retrieved, go to step 5.
- Using NGS tester, select FEM PID BRK_LVL. If PID reads NOTOK, go to next step. If PID does not read NOTOK, replace FEM.
- Disconnect brake fluid warning switch 3-pin harness connector C139. Monitor FEM PID BRK_LVL. If PID reads NO, replace brake fluid warning switch. If PID does not read NO, repair short to ground in Dark Blue wire.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect brake fluid warning switch 3-pin harness connector C139. Monitor FEM PID BRK_LVL. Connect a 10-amp fused jumper wire between brake fluid warning switch harness connector C139 terminal No. 1 (Dark Blue wire) and ground. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Monitor FEM PID BRK_LVL. If PID does not read OK and then NOTOK, remove jumper wire and go to next step. If PID reads OK then NOTOK, go to step 8. If fused jumper wire blows, remove jumper wire and go to step 7.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect FEM 12-pin harness connector C190. Measure resistance between FEM harness connector C190 terminal No. 11 (Dark Blue wire) and brake fluid warning switch harness connector C139 terminal No. 1 (Dark Blue wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Dark Blue wire.
- Measure voltage between FEM harness connector C190 terminal No. 11 (Dark Blue wire) and ground. If voltage is present, repair short to voltage in Dark Blue wire. If voltage is not present, replace FEM.
- Measure resistance between brake fluid warning switch harness connector C139 terminal No. 3 (Black wire) and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black wire.
- Measure resistance between brake fluid warning switch terminals No. 1 and 3 (component side) with fluid level empty then full. Resistance should be less than 5 ohms when empty and more than 10 k/ohms when full. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace brake fluid warning switch.
- Using NGS tester, clear DTC and repeat FEM self-test. If DTC B1279 is retrieved, go to next step. If DTC B1279 is not retrieved, go to step 13.
- Select and monitor FEM PID PRK_BRK. If PID reads ON, go to next step. If PID does not read ON, replace FEM.
- Disconnect park brake switch single-pin harness connector C321. Monitor FEM PID PRK_BRK. If PID reads ON, repair short to ground in Red/Yellow wire. If PID does not read ON, replace park brake switch.
- Select and monitor FEM PID PRK_BRK with parking brake control disengaged and engaged. If PID reading does not agree with park brake position, go to next step. If PID reading agrees with park brake position, replace instrument cluster.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect park brake switch harness connector C321. Connect 10-amp fused jumper between park brake switch harness connector C321 (Red/Yellow wire) and ground. Monitor FEM PID PRK_BRK. If PID does not read ON, go to next step. If PID reads ON, replace park brake switch. If fused jumper wire blows, remove jumper wire and go to step 16.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect FEM 20-pin harness connector C346. Measure resistance between FEM harness connector C346 terminal No. 19 (Red/Yellow wire) and park brake switch harness connector (Red/Yellow wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 7. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Red/Yellow wire.
- Measure voltage between FEM harness connector C346 terminal No. 19 (Red/Yellow wire) and ground. If voltage is present, repair short to voltage in Red/Yellow wire. If voltage is not present, replace FEM.
NOTE:
Ensure parking brake control is fully released during FEM self-test
