Removing and installing automatic transmission (GA8HP75Z) (X5 M)
Special tools required:

If there are signs of corrosion, the rust must be removed and the threads must be cleaned before removal.
Replace rusted, damaged screws.
Failure to comply with this instruction will result in serious damage to the engine block and transmission.
- Avoid contact with transmission oil and inhalation of transmission oil vapors under all circumstances.
- Wear protective gloves.
- Ensure adequate ventilation
Check TRANSMISSION OIL LEVEL .
Use only the approved transmission oil. See the Fluid Capacities tab for the selected vehicle.
Failure to comply with this requirement will result in serious damage to the automatic transmission!
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Disconnect NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE .
- Remove FAN COWL .
- Remove INTAKE SILENCER HOUSING .
- Remove REINFORCEMENT PLATE .
- Remove UNDER/BODY PROTECTION (FRONT) and REAR ENGINE UNDERCOVER .
- Remove EXHAUST SYSTEM .
- Remove FRONT PROPELLER SHAFT .
- Partially remove PROPELLER SHAFT
.
- Disconnect propeller shaft at transmission.
- Release center mount.
- Tie up propeller shaft to underbody.NOTE: Bending the propeller shaft by an excessive angle can cause premature damage to the joint/propeller shaft!
- Remove heat shields.
- Support engine with lifter when removing transmission.
Removal:
Release screws (1).
Remove panel (2).
Vehicles with Adaptive Drive:
Remove cover (1).
Unfasten screws (2).
Secure line (3) under cross-brace.
Release cable from holder (1) and from transmission.
Release screw (2) and remove crankshaft sensor.
Unlock and disconnect connector (3).
- Unlock and disconnect connector (1) by turning.
- Do not touch pins.
- Release cable from brackets.

Insert special tool 24 2 390 in sealing cup (1).
Release screw (1).
Disconnect hydraulic lines (2) to transmission oil cooler.
Crank engine at vibration damper until screw (1) is visible in recess.
Release all 6 screws (1) on torque converter.
Installation note:
Replace screws for torque converter.
Observe tightening sequence.
- The torque converter must always be screwed to the vertically arranged, elongated hole (1) first.
Turn the torque converter until the elongated hole (1) is visible in the opening.
- Tighten down screw.
Tightening torque 24 40 1AZ .
- Observe the tightening sequence
of the additional five screws (torque converter on flywheel).

Screw connection 1 = vertically arranged, elongated hole in torque converter
Tightening torque 24 40 1AZ .
Press special tool 24 1 380 together and insert into recess in transmission housing.
Remove seal plug (1).
Supporting transmission:
Support transmission with special tools 23 4 050, 00 2 030.
Secure transmission to mounting with tensioning strap (1).
Repair work is are described in GEARBOX HOLDER .
After completion of work, Check TRANSMISSION OIL LEVEL .
Loosen screws.
Release screw (1).
Remove transmission cross member.
Lower transmission.
Release and detach connector (1) from transfer box control unit.
Remove bolt (2) and ground cable from transfer box.
Undo the Torx screws.
Disconnect transmission.
Installation:
Check that fitting sleeves (2) are correctly fitted.
Replace damaged fitting sleeves.
Transmission flange-mount.
Insert screws and tighten.
Tightening torque 24 00 1AZ .
Install seal plug (1).
Remove special tool 24 1 380.
Crank engine at vibration damper until screw (1) is visible in recess.
Insert and tighten all 6 screws (1) of torque converter.
Tightening torque 24 40 1AZ .
Install hydraulic lines (2).
Insert screw (1) and tighten.
Parts: Replace sealing rings.
Tightening torque 17 22 1AZ .
Remove special tool 24 2 390.
Insert plug connector (1) and lock by turning.
Install cable at transmission and holder (1).
Install crankshaft sensor.
Fit bolt (2) and tighten.
Lock connector (3).
Lock connector (1).
Install ground strap.
Fit nut (2) and tighten.
Tightening torque 24 11 7AZ .
Install the transmission cross member.
Insert screws and tighten.
Tightening torque 22 32 11AZ .
Insert screw (1) and tighten.
Tightening torque 22 32 6AZ .
Remove special tool 23 4 050 00 2 030.
Vehicles with Adaptive Drive:
Install line (3).
Insert screws (2) and tighten.
Install cover (1).
Install panel (2).
Insert screws (1) and tighten.
Required follow-up work:
- Install FRONT PROPELLER SHAFT .
- Install PROPELLER SHAFT .
- Install heat shields.
- Install EXHAUST SYSTEM .
- Install REINFORCEMENT PLATE .
- Install UNDER/BODY PROTECTION (FRONT) and REAR ENGINE UNDERCOVER .
- Install FAN COWL .
- Install INTAKE SILENCER HOUSING .
- Connect BATTERY EARTH LEAD .
