Timing Mechanism Drive Chain, Removing And Installing

Removal

Proceed as follows:

-- Removal engine, refer to ENGINE, REMOVAL .

-- Separate the engine and transmission. For vehicles with a manual transmission, refer to ENGINE AND MANUAL TRANSMISSION, SEPARATING . For vehicles with an automatic transmission, refer to ENGINE AND AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, SEPARATING .

-- Secure the engine on the engine and transmission holder, refer to ENGINE, SECURING ON ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION HOLDER .

-- Remove the cylinder head cover, refer to CYLINDER HEAD COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- On vehicle with manual transmission, remove dual mass flywheel, refer to DUAL MASS FLYWHEEL, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- On a vehicle with automatic transmission, remove drive plate, refer to DRIVE PLATE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the oil pan, refer to OIL PAN, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the timing chain cover lower section, refer to LOWER TIMING CHAIN COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Mark running direction of timing mechanism drive chain with arrows using paint -lower arrow- for reinstallation.

CAUTION:

Risk of damaging timing mechanism drive chain.

Do not mark timing mechanism with a chain punch, notch or something similar.

-- Adjust crankshaft at vibration damper screw in direction of engine rotation to "TDC" marking.

The markings on the vibration damper and sealing flange must align -arrow-.

Camshaft BarT10068 A must engage in grooves on both camshafts at the same time.

NOTE:

Due to the camshaft adjuster function, the camshaft grooves may not be perfectly horizontal. If necessary, turn the camshaft back and forth -arrows- slightly with an open end wrench in order to insert the Camshaft BarT10068A.

If the Camshaft BarT10068 A does not engage, rotate the crankshaft 1 rotation further in direction of engine rotation.

-- Remove camshaft timing chain tensioner -arrow-.

-- Counter hold with Counterhold - Vibration DamperT10069 at vibration damper bolt.

-- Loosen chain sprocket bolt -arrow- approximately 1 turn.

-- Remove timing mechanism drive chain tensioner -arrows-.

-- Remove chain sprocket bolt -arrow-.

-- Remove camshaft timing chain sprocket with timing chain from timing mechanism drive chain sprocket -arrow- and pivot to side.

-- Remove timing mechanism drive chain sprocket with drive chain.

Installation

Tightening specifications, refer to CAMSHAFT TIMING CHAINS OVERVIEW .

NOTE:

Replace the bolts which are being tightened with an additional turn.

-- When reInstallation a used timing mechanism drive chain, note running direction marking -lower arrow-.

-- Install timing mechanism drive chain together with chain sprocket on oil pump.

Installation only possible in one position.

-- If large chain sprocket cannot be installed, rotate oil pump shaft slightly.

-- Check if crankshaft is in "TDC" position:

Milled drive chain sprocket tooth must align with bearing joint -arrow A-.
Tab on chain sprocket must align with tab -arrow B- on oil pump housing.

-- Install camshaft timing chain sprocket with timing chain in place.

Pins on back side of chain sprocket must engage in cut outs -arrow-.

-- Tighten chain sprocket bolt -arrow- by hand.

-- Release locking splines in chain tensioner with a small screwdriver -arrow- and press tensioning rail against chain tensioner.

-- Tighten chain tensioner while pressed down -arrows-.

-- Rotate crankshaft 2 revolutions in direction of engine rotation at vibration damper bolt and place at "TDC" marking.

If the camshaft bar cannot be engaged, adjust timing again.

Rotate crankshaft 2 revolutions in direction of engine rotation at vibration damper bolt and place at "TDC" marking.

Check timing again.

-- Install the timing chain cover lower section, refer to LOWER TIMING CHAIN COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Install the oil pan, refer to OIL PAN, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- On vehicle with manual transmission, install dual mass flywheel, refer to DUAL MASS FLYWHEEL, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- On a vehicle with automatic transmission, install drive plate, refer to DRIVE PLATE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Install the cylinder head cover, refer to CYLINDER HEAD COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Install the engine, refer to ENGINE, INSTALLATION .

-- Fill engine oil and check the oil level, refer to OIL LEVEL, CHECKING .
