Tightening Specifications

NOTE:

The tightening specifications apply only to lightly greased, oiled, phosphated or blackened nuts and bolts.

Additional lubricant such as engine or transmission oil may be used, but do not use graphite lubricant.

Do not use any ungreased parts.

Tightening specification tolerance: ±15%.

Tightening specifications, refer to SUBFRAME OVERVIEW .

Procedure

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

NOTE:

Replace the bolts which are being tightened with an additional turn.

Replace sealing rings, seals and self-locking nuts and bolts.

Replace bolts for securing torque converter to drive plate with new original bolts.

Secure all hose connections using hose clamps appropriate for the model type. .

When Installation, place all cable ties and heat insulating sleeves in same locations.

-- Install right engine support.

-- If no alignment sleeves for center engine and transmission are present in cylinder block, insert sleeves.

-- Checking position of torque converter.

When torque converter is installed correctly, distance between lower contact surfaces of threaded holes at torque converter and contact surface of bell housing on Automatic Transmission 0AT is approximately 25 mm.
If torque converter is not completely inserted, distance is approximately 10 mm.

-- Before guiding engine and transmission together, rotate torque converter and drive plate so that holes or threaded holes are same height as opening for removed starter -arrows-.

-- Attach transmission to engine.

CAUTION:

Risk of destroying transmission due to torque converter inserted incorrectly.

Keep checking whether the torque converter behind the drive plate can be turned before and during tightening of the bolts at engine/transmission connection.
If torque converter cannot be rotated, the ATF pump coupling plate and therefore the transmission are destroyed when connections are tightened to final torque.

-- Install the ATF wires, refer to Electric and Electronic Components and Component Locations .

All Vehicles:

-- Install the power steering pressure line, refer to LINES AND HOSES ASSEMBLY OVERVIEW (VEHICLES WITH V8 TDI ENGINE) .

-- Install the starter, refer to STARTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

Vehicles with 4-Zone Climate Control:

-- Install rear coolant pipes, refer to REAR COOLANT PIPES, 4-ZONE CLIMATE CONTROL, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

All Vehicles:

-- Tighten the front drive shaft on the transfer case, refer to FRONT DRIVESHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Install pre-catalytic converters, refer to CATALYTIC CONVERTERS, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Install main catalytic converters, refer to PRE-CATALYTIC CONVERTERS, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Slowly guide the engine/transmission subassembly with subframe into body from below using Scissor Lift Table VAS6131. Be careful not to damage the boots on the driveshaft.

-- Align subframe, engine carrier and transmission carrier using marks made on longitudinal during removal.

-- Tighten the bolts for the subframe, engine carrier and transmission carrier only to the specification, refer to SUBFRAME, SECURING . Do not tighten further. Tighten bolts only after an axle alignment.

WARNING:

Risk of accident due to loose connections.

Vehicle must not be driven in this condition.

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

-- Install the universal joint on steering gear, refer to POWER STEERING GEAR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Install the selector lever cable and check the adjustment, refer to SELECTOR LEVER CABLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

All Vehicles:

-- Tighten the rear drive shaft on the transfer case, refer to REAR DRIVE SHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Install the stabilizer bar, refer to STABILIZER BAR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Install the brake caliper, refer to Mechanical Components .

-- Install the suspension strut (coil spring), refer to COIL SPRING SUSPENSION STRUT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Install the suspension strut (air suspension), refer to AIR SUSPENSION STRUT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Install the engine control module, refer to ENGINE CONTROL MODULE .

-- Install the refrigerant lines, refer to COMPRESSOR REFRIGERANT LINES, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .

-- Electrical Connections and Wiring Routing, refer to the Wiring Diagrams.

-- Follow the steps after connecting the battery, refer to BATTERY, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

CAUTION:

There is a risk of destroying control modules with excess voltage.

Do not use a charger as a starting aid.

-- Install the wiper arms and adjust, refer to WINDSHIELD WIPER ARM, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Fill engine oil and check the oil level, refer to OIL LEVEL, CHECKING .

-- Before starting engine for the first time, fill the hydraulic oil in the power steering reservoir, refer to Checking Hydraulic Oil Level, Bleeding Steering System and Checking for Leaks .

NOTE:

Do not run the power steering pump when it is dry.

-- Fill the refrigerant circuit, refer to Refrigerant System - with Refrigerant R134a.

-- Fill the coolant, refer to COOLANT, DRAINING AND FILLING .

NOTE:

Do not use drained coolant in the following situations:

If the cylinder head or cylinder block was replaced.

If the coolant is contaminated.

-- Align the subframe and engine carrier, refer to SUBFRAME, SECURING .

-- Align the transmission support, refer to TRANSMISSION SUPPORT AND BRACKET ASSEMBLY OVERVIEW .

-- On a vehicle with air suspension, deactivate vehicle lift mode, refer to VEHICLE LIFT MODE .

-- Perform axle alignment, refer to AXLE ALIGNMENT CONTROL POSITION ON VEHICLES WITH AIR SUSPENSION, CHECKING .

WARNING:

Risk of accident due to loose connections.

Tighten subframe bolts to final torque after axle alignment.

-- Install exhaust system free of stress, refer to EXHAUST SYSTEM, INSTALLING .

Vehicles with Automatic Transmission:

-- Check the ATF level, refer to ATF PIPES, ATF THERMOSTAT AND ATF COOLER, 6-CYLINDER 3.6L FSI, ASSEMBLY OVERVIEW .
