Valve Clearance: Adjustment

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2007 Toyota Land Cruiser. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT (See  REPLACEMENT  )
  2. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
NOTE: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag activation.
  3. REMOVE V-BANK COVER (See  REMOVAL  )
  4. REMOVE AIR CLEANER HOSE ASSEMBLY (See  REMOVAL  )
  5. REMOVE DRIVE BELT (See  REMOVAL   )
  6. REMOVE OIL COOLER PIPE (See  REMOVAL   )
  7. REMOVE IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY (See  REMOVAL  )
  8. REMOVE NO. 3 TIMING BELT COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY RH (See  REMOVAL   )
  9. REMOVE NO. 3 TIMING BELT COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY LH (See  REMOVAL   )
  10. REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY RH (See  REMOVAL   )
  11. REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY LH (See  REMOVAL   )
  12. SET NO. 1 CYLINDER TO TDC/COMPRESSION
    1. Turn the crankshaft damper, and align its groove with timing mark "0" of the No. 1 timing belt cover.

    2. Check that the timing marks of the camshaft timing pulleys and timing belt rear plates are aligned. If not, turn the crankshaft 1 complete revolution (360°) and align the marks as above.

  13. INSPECT VALVE CLEARANCE
    1. Check only the valves indicated.
      1. Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the valve lifter and camshaft.

        Standard valve clearance (Cold)

        VALVE LIFTER AND CAMSHAFT

        Valve Specified Condition
        Intake 0.15 to 0.25 mm (0.006 to 0.010 in.)
        Exhaust 0.25 to 0.35 mm (0.010 to 0.014 in.)
Fig 3: Measuring Clearance Between Valve Lifter & Camshaft

      2. Record valve clearance measurements that are out of the specified range. These measurements will be used later to determine the size of the adjustment shim to be installed.
    2. Turn the crankshaft 1 revolution (360°) and align the marks.
    3. Check only the valves indicated in Fig 4 . Measure the valve clearance.

      Standard valve clearance (Cold)

      VALVE CLEARANCE

      Valve Specified Condition
      Intake 0.15 to 0.25 mm (0.006 to 0.010 in.)
      Exhaust 0.25 to 0.35 mm (0.010 to 0.014 in.)
      Fig 4: Measuring Valve Clearance

  14. REMOVE TIMING BELT
    1. Remove the timing belt (see REMOVAL  ).
  15. REMOVE CAMSHAFT (for Bank 2) (See  REMOVAL   )
  16. REMOVE CAMSHAFT (for Bank 1) (See  REMOVAL   )
  17. ADJUST VALVE CLEARANCE
    1. Using a powerful magnet, remove the valve lifter and adjusting shim.
      NOTE:
      • Since the shims might drop inside the cylinder head, the operation should be performed slowly.
      • Shims should be classified by the installation.
    2. Determine the replacement adjusting shim size according to these formulas and tables.
      1. Using a micrometer, measure the thickness of the removed shim.
Fig 5: Measuring Thickness Of Removed Shim Using Micrometer
        G04435589Courtesy of © TOYOTA, LICENSE AGREEMENT TMS1002
      2. Calculate the thickness of a new shim so that the valve clearance is within the specified value.

T = Thickness of removed shim

        A = Measured valve clearance

N = Thickness of new shim

        Standard valve clearance

        SHIM THICKNESS

        Valve Standard Thickness
        Intake N = T + (A - 0.20 mm (0.008 in.))
        Exhaust N = T + (A - 0.30 mm (0.012 in.))
    3. Select a new shim with a thickness as close as possible to the calculated value.

      HINT:

Shims are available in 41 increments of 0.020 mm (0.0008 in.), from 2.00 mm (0.0787 in.) to 2.80 mm (0.1102).

    4. Place a new adjusting shim on the valve.
    5. Set the valve lifter in place.
    6. Recheck the valve clearance.
