Removing and installing instrument panel trim (Cooper Convertible)
When working on trim panel components, make sure that visible surfaces are not scratched or damaged (e.g. by sharp-edged tools).
Removal:
The following parts must be removed as preliminary work.
| 1 | STEERING WHEEL/AIRBAG , AIRBAG UNIT and/or (sports steering wheel) AIRBAG UNIT . |
| 2 | INSTRUMENT PANEL . |
| 3 | Left/right TRIM PANEL for a-pillar. |
| 4 | COVER for BMW head-up display. |
| 5 | MID-RANGE SPEAKERS . |
| 6 | CENTRAL INSTRUMENT and HEADUNIT . |
| 7 | Left FRESH AIR GRILLE and/or right FRESH AIR GRILLE . |
| 8 | CONTROL PANEL for air conditioning. |
| 9 | CENTER CONSOLE SWITCH CENTER . |
| 10 | GLOVE COMPARTMENT with housing. |
| 11 | left/right TRIM PANEL for center console |
| 12 | ASSEMBLY CARRIER . |
| 13 | CENTER CONSOLE , complete. |
| 14 | Bottom instrument PANEL TRIM . |
| 15 | Lower part of STEERING COLUMN SHROUD and/or upper part of STEERING COLUMN SHROUD . |
| 16 | Steering column SWITCH CLUSTER . |
For equipment variants with BMW Head-Up Display, make sure that Head-Up Display is retracted.
Remove screw (1).
Unscrew the screws (1).
Release screws (1) on passenger's side.
Disconnect plug connection (1) from front passenger airbag (2).
US version only (no diagram):
Disconnect 3 plug connections (1) from front passenger airbag (2).
Observe the NOTES on airbag plug connections .
Release screws (1) on driver's side.
Remove the dashboard (1) with the aid of the helper and pull out all electrical lines (2).
Installation:
Make sure that guides (1) on dashboard (2) are correctly seated in respective mountings of firewall.
Make sure gaskets are correctly seated on air ducts.
Insert and install foam moldings of the dashboard (2) correctly at the center.
Insert dashboard (1) with the help of a helper and connect all electrical lines (2).
Make sure all electrical lines (2) are correctly routed.
Tighten screws (1) on driver's side.
Tightening torque 51 45 1AZ .
Connect plug connection (1) of front passenger airbag (2) and lock.
US version only (no diagram ):
Connect 3 plug connections (1) of front passenger airbag (2) and lock.
(Observe and comply with NOTES regarding airbag plug connections.
Tighten screws (1) on passenger's side.
Tightening torque 51 45 1AZ .
Tighten down screws (1).
Tightening torque 51 45 1AZ .
Tighten screw (1).
Tightening torque 51 45 1AZ .
Required follow-up work:
The following parts must be installed as follow-up work.

| 9 | CENTER CONSOLE SWITCH CENTER . |
| 10 | GLOVE COMPARTMENT with housing. |
| 11 | Left/right TRIM PANEL for center console |
| 12 | ASSEMBLY CARRIER . |
| 13 | CENTER CONSOLE , complete. |
| 14 | Instrument PANEL TRIM , bottom. |
| 15 | Lower part of STEERING COLUMN SHROUD and/or upper part of STEERING COLUMN SHROUD . |
| 16 | Steering column SWITCH CLUSTER . |
