Removing and installing/replacing airbag unit (Cooper Convertible)
WARNING:
Observe the following instructions without fail to avoid any risk of injury by the airbag unit.
- Comply with SAFETY REGULATIONS when handling components with gas generators.
- Do not exert any force on the airbag unit.
- Use only specified release tool for the airbag unit!
NOTE:
Incorrect handling can lead to airbag deployment and cause serious injury!
IMPORTANT:
STEERING WHEEL must be replaced if airbag unit has been triggered!
Follow PROCEDURE after airbag deployment.
Preliminary work needed:
- Disconnect cable from BATTERY GROUND LEAD.
Removal:
Insert Torx screwdriver T25 (1) into the 3 openings on the back of the steering wheel and press until the airbag unit has unlocked.
NOTE:
Refer to the next graphic for improved depiction of unlocking.

Disconnect plug connections (1) and (2).
Remove airbag unit (3).
WARNING:
Injury hazard!
Airbag unit may only be set down with the airbag itself facing upwards .
Installation:
Connect plug connections (1) and (2).
Position airbag unit (1).
Press on the airbag unit to engage it on the steering wheel.
Check the engagement by pulling on the airbag unit.
Required follow-up work:
- Connect BATTERY GROUND LEAD. .
