54 34 120 Replacing soft top fabric

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

Open folding sunroof a few centimeters to relieve tension on soft top fabric.

Pull off trim (1) towards rear.

Detach soft top fabric (1) from front bow (2).

Installation: 

Replace double-sided adhesive tape.

Unclip front plastic catches (1) in marked area.

If necessary, remove soft top fabric (2) from front bow (front) in direction of arrow.

Detach tension cable (1) at side from roof frame.

Installation: 

Secure tension cable (1) to front bow with insulating tape.

Unscrew left and right nuts (1).

Feed out retaining lug (2) on both sides.

Installation: 

Press retaining lugs together.

Disengage wire bow (1) on both sides.

Carefully release retainers in marked area (2).

Carefully release soft top fabric from crossbar.

Installation: 

Replace double-sided adhesive tape.

Lever out plastic rivet (1).

Installation: 

Plastic rivet (1) cannot be removed without being destroyed.

NOTE: Fold soft top at bow upwards in order to relieve load on soft top fabric.

Feed soft top fabric holder (2) out of seal carrier (3).

Retaining lugs (1) on soft top fabric holder (2) must engage correctly in designated guides in seal carrier (3).

Feed out tension cable (1) and lever spring (2) out of pin.

Installation: 

Press spring circlip correctly onto pin groove.

Check for secure seating.

Carefully press headlining to one side.

Pull off retaining clip (1).

Disconnect plug connection (1) for heated rear window.

Feed wiring harness (3) out of tension strap loop (2) and bow.

Drill out blind rivets (1) on tensioning strap (2).

Release screws (1).

Drill out blind rivet (2).

Remove tensioning strap (3) including soft top fabric.

Pull soft top fabric (1) out of bow guide (2).

Installation note: 

Vehicles up to production date 01/2012: 

Check stowage lock is current version.

  1. Previous version

    Identifying feature: cover (2) is connected to the stowage lock.

  2. Current version

    Identifying feature: cover (2) is connected to the stowage lock (1).

If the version (A) used up to now is installed, a conversion to the current version (B) of the STOWAGE LOCK  is required.

Installation note: 

Vehicles up to production date 04/2012: 

Check main pillar is current version.

  1. Previous version

    Identifying feature: Main pillar is not chamfered in top area (1).

  2. Current version

    Identifying feature: Main (1) pillar is chamfered in top area (1).

If the version (A) used up to now is installed, a conversion to the current version (B) of the LEFT AND RIGHT MAIN PILLAR  is required.

Installation note: 

Perform FUNCTION CHECK  and look out for folds in and tensioning of soft top cover.

Check retaining hooks.

With new soft top cover, the force of the mechanism may not be sufficient to fully close the retaining hooks.

Open soft-top bow and close folding sunroof.

Lock soft-top bow.

Soft top cover is stretched and after settling the retaining hooks are correctly locked again.
