64 11 205 Removing and installing/replacing heater (A/C control)

NOTE: Refrigerant drawn off from A/C system. Refer to 64 50 009 Drawing off, evacuating and filling A/C system (R 134a) .
Drain coolant. Refer to 17 00 005 DRAINING AND ADDING COOLANT (S62) .
Remove microfilter for passenger compartment ventilation. Refer to 64 31 010 Replacing microfilter for interior ventilation .
Remove assembly compartment partition wall. Refer to 51 71 080 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING PARTITION WALL FOR EQUIPMENT COMPARTMENT ON RIGHT .
Remove storage compartment. Refer to 51 16 200 REMOVING AND INSTALLING CENTER CONSOLE .
Remove trim for instrument panel (upper section). Refer to 51 45 050 REMOVING AND INSTALLING TRIM FOR UPPER SECTION OF INSTRUMENT PANEL .
Remove heating duct for footwell on right. Refer to 64 11 820 Replacing servodrive of fresh air flap .

Release hose clamps (1) and detach coolant hoses.

Important! 

Carefully blow through lines in order to remove remaining coolant from heating element.

Unscrew nuts (1).

Release nut and remove clamping screw.

Slide steering spindle forwards in direction of arrow.

Installation: 

Replace clamping screw.

Clamping screw must rest in retaining groove of upper steering spindle.

Observe tightening torque, 22 Nm.

Unclip heating duct for footwell on left (1) at catches and remove in direction of arrow.

Detach cable strap (1).

Disconnect plug connections (2).

Unclip wiring harness (1).

Unfasten plug connection (2) and disconnect.

Disconnect plug connection (3).

Detach cable straps (1).

Disconnect plug connections (2).

Detach cable strap (1).

Disconnect plug connection (2).

Unlock plug (3) and detach from steering column.

Unclip wiring harness (4).

Disconnect plug connections (1) and (2).

Unclip plug connection (1).

Detach cable strap (2).

Unlock pin (3) and pull out in direction of arrow.

Secure wiring harness (1) as illustrated with fabric adhesive tape.

Disconnect plug connection (2).

Unlock plug connections (3) and disconnect.

Unscrew bolt (1).

Installation: 

Cross-member of A-pillar (2) must rest on retaining bracket (3).

Observe tightening torque, 51 71 11AZ. Refer to BODY EQUIPMENT - TIGHTENING TORQUES .

Unscrew bolt (1).

Installation: 

Observe tightening torque, 51 71 10AZ. Refer to BODY EQUIPMENT - TIGHTENING TORQUES .

Release screws (1).

Loosen screws (2).

Installation: 

Screws (2) only:

Observe tightening torque, 51 71 8AZ. Refer to BODY EQUIPMENT - TIGHTENING TORQUES .

Release screws (1).

Installation: 

Observe tightening torque, 51 71 8AZ. Refer to BODY EQUIPMENT - TIGHTENING TORQUES .

Release screw (1) and secure spacers (3) against falling out.

Detach cross-member of A-pillar (2) with aid of a second person and remove from car.

Installation: 

Observe tightening torque, 51 71 9AZ. Refer to BODY EQUIPMENT - TIGHTENING TORQUES .

Insert spacers (3) between frame and cross-member for A-pillar.

Installation: 

Secure optical waveguide (1) as illustrated with cable strap (2) to wiring harness (3).

Installation: 

Mounting with guide pin: 

Insert guide pin (1) into bore (2).

Mounting without guide pin: 

Align instrument panel trim to door trim panel.

Disconnect plug connection (1).

Installation: 

Do not damage wiring harness (2) when installing heater.

Check that grommet (3) is correctly seated.

Unscrew bolt (1).

Detach tubes (2) from expansion valve.

Installation: 

Replace sealing rings.

Pull out heater (1) in direction of arrow.

Installation: 

Tape off condensate drain (1) as illustrated with fabric adhesive tape (2) and coat with antiseize agent.

Replace grommet (3) if necessary.

Remove grommet (3), coat with antiseize agent and install from outside after installing heater.

Installation: 

After installing heater, make sure condensate drain (1) is correctly seated.
