17 00 005 Draining and adding coolant (S62)

Only perform this work after engine has cooled down.

Recycling 

Catch and dispose of drained coolant. Observe country-specific waste-disposal regulations.

NOTE: Follow instructions for working on cooling system. Refer to 17 00 Instructions for working on cooling system  .

Draining coolant: 

Open cap (1) on coolant expansion tank.

Remove underbody protection at front and rear.

NOTE: Remove heat shield (1) to facilitate access to drain plug on left side of engine block.

Release screws.

Remove heat shield (1).

NOTE: The heat shield on the E39 is shown.

Open drain plug (1) at bottom of radiator.

Installation:

Replace seal.

Drain, catch and dispose of coolant.

Open drain plug (1) on left and right sides of engine block.

Installation:

Replace seal.

Tightening torque, 11 11 5AZ. Refer to ENGINE - TIGHTENING TORQUES .

Drain, catch and dispose of coolant.

Adding coolant: 

NOTE: Slowly fill coolant expansion tank with coolant.

Pour coolant into coolant expansion tank to a level of approx. 5 mm above max. cold fill level.

NOTE: The tank mark indicates the fluid level at approx. 20°C.

Use only recommended coolant.

Vent cooling system and check for leaks. Refer to 17 00 039 Venting cooling system and checking for water leaks (S62)  .
