Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Remove left air filter housing   AR09.10-P-1151MND
    INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Only install upper engine cover after the leak test.  
2 Remove right air filter housing   AR09.10-P-1152MND
3 Remove lower front center, center and rear engine compartment paneling   AR61.20-P-1105LWE
    INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Only install lower front, center and rear engine compartment paneling again after a leak test.  
4 Remove left catalytic converter   AR49.10-P-5502MND
5 Remove right catalytic converter   AR49.10-P-5503MND
6 Remove heat shield (29) over the crankshaft Hall sensor   AR15.12-P-2136MND 
7 Remove heat shield over starter Engine 276.8 in model 213, 238 with code M005 (4MATIC) AR15.30-P-7100MNG 
    Engine 276.8 in model 213, 238 except code M005 (4MATIC) AR15.30-P-7100MND 
8 Unscrew screws/bolts (21) of heat shield (20) of left knock sensor (3) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, heat shield of knock sensor to crankcase/engine support/bracket *BA15.10-P-1002-02B 
9 Remove heat protection over left knock sensor (3)    
10 Unscrew screws/bolts (23) of heat shield (22) of right knock sensor (9) Engine 276.8 in model 213, 238 with code M005 (4MATIC)  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, heat shield of knock sensor to crankcase/engine support/bracket *BA15.10-P-1002-02B 
11 Remove exhaust gas recirculation line Engine 276.853 in model 213  
      AR14.20-P-0001MND
12 Remove screws/bolts (26) Engine 276.853 in model 213  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, heat shield to exhaust gas recirculation line (center) bracket *BA14.20-P-1012-01M 
13 Lift out heat shield (25) upwards Engine 276.853 in model 213  
14 Remove bolts (6) TORQUE SPECIFICATION M6X1 *BA00.10-P-1002-04A 
15 Release and disconnect electrical connection (4)    
16 Unclip electrical connector (4) and electric line (1) from bracket (5)    
17 Unclip electrical line (1) from clamp (2)    
18 Unclip electric line (1) to right knock sensor (9) on crankcase    
19 Separate cable tie (11) on electric line (1) to left knock sensor (3) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace cable tie (11).  
20 Unscrew screws/bolts (7, 8) and remove knock sensors (3, 9) together upwards IMPORTANT The knock sensors (3, 9) can only be removed together with the electric line (1).  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, knock sensor to crankcase *BA15.10-P-1001-02B 
21 Install in the reverse order    
INSPECT Check     
22 Read out and erase fault memory    
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS   Engine 276.8 in model 213 AD00.00-P-2000-04B
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS   Engine 276.8 in model 238 AD00.00-P-2000-06LWO
WARNING Risk of burn injuries  , suffocation and poisoning when working on the exhaust system and the components connected to it. Risk of suffocation and risk of poisoning caused by inhalation of gaseous and solid components of the exhaust. Risk of poisoning  caused by skin contact with solid components of the exhaust. Wear protective clothing and safety glasses. Use the extraction system. Move people out of the hazard area. AS49.00-Z-0001-01A
WARNING Risk of accident  from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury  (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts. AS00.00-Z-0005-01A
23 Perform an engine test run; check engine for functionality and leaktightness
