Remove/install valve springs and/or valve stem seals - AR05.30-P-3500GZA (ML350, ML550, GL450, GL550)

MODIFICATION NOTES

21.2.06 SPECIAL TOOL 273 589 00 61 00 Replace depressor
SPECIAL TOOL 272 589 00 61 00 Depressor		 Step 11  
REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install    
DANGER Risk of injury  caused by fingers being pinched  or crushed when removing, installing or aligning hoods, doors, trunk lids, tailgates or sliding roof. Keep body parts and limbs well clear of moving parts. AS00.00-Z-0011-01A
1 Remove cylinder head covers Right cylinder head cover AR01.20-P-5012GZA
    Left cylinder head cover AR01.20-P-5013GZA
2 Remove camshafts   AR05.20-P-6992GZA 
3 Remove hydraulic valve clearance compensation elements   AR05.00-P-2011GZA 
4 Remove spark plugs TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA15.10-P-1001-01C 
5 Crank engine at crankshaft in direction of rotation until piston of cylinder to be machined is positioned at TDC IMPORTANT Crank crankshaft at center bolt, belt pulley, at the same time hold up timing chain, so that it does not jam when cranking.
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Before installing camshafts turn engine again at crankshaft in direction of engine rotation in starting position to a 40° crank angle after ignition TDC.

6 Connect cylinder leakage testing unit   AR01.00-P-1300-01VA

7 Pressurize compression chamber to about 5 bar IMPORTANT If the crankshaft turns, the retaining lock for crankshaft/starter ring gear must be installed: ↓  
    Install retaining lock for crankshaft / starter ring gear. AR03.30-P-5000GZA
8 Mount counterholder (01) on cylinder head SPECIAL TOOL Fig 3
9 Mount assembly lever (02) with depressor (03) on counterholder (01) and align IMPORTANT Place depressor (03) on upper valve spring retainer (1) vertically.

10 Remove upper valve spring retainer (1) and valve spring (2) NOTES When pressing together valve spring (2) ensure that depressor (03) does not slip, otherwise surface of valve stem can be damaged.
NOTES Do not allow valves to touch piston crowns otherwise they will be damaged.
IMPORTANT Compress valve spring (2). Remove split valve spring retainer locks (3) with magnetic finger (04), magnet pit or tweezers.

11 Remove lower valve spring retainer (4)    
12 Replace valve stem seal (5) IMPORTANT Check surface of valve stem for roughness and formation of ridging (visual inspection or with nail).
Replace valves with a rough stem surface or formation of ridging: ↓		 AR05.30-P-3500-02VA 
    Remove/install valves. AR05.30-P-3511SX

INSPECT Checking     
13 Check upper valve spring retainer (1) and lower valve spring retainer (4) for pitting, replace if necessary    
14 Perform machining of other cylinders in the same way IMPORTANT If retaining lock for crankshaft/starter ring gear was installed then it must be removed before any further turning of engine.  
15 Install in the reverse order    
16 Using dipstick, check engine oil level approx. 5 minutes after switching off warm engine; adjust to correct level if so required NOTES The vehicle must be positioned horizontally on the wheels, otherwise false measurements occur.
IMPORTANT Insert dipstick fully in dipstick guide tube and leave for at least 3 s.		  
DANGER Risk of accident  caused by vehicle starting off by itself when engine is running. Risk of injury  caused by contusions and burns during starting procedure or when working near the engine as it is running Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving by itself.
Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes.
Do not touch hot or rotating parts.		 AS00.00-Z-0005-01A
17 Carry out an engine test run and check the engine for leaks    
18 Inspect cooling system for leaks   AR20.00-P-1010GZC
